Practice Ejections: HC punishes Cowboys for fighting; 'We need discipline' after hands fly

USA Today5 days ago
Brian Schottenheimer is bringing a youthful energy and new mindset to his first training camp as Cowboys head coach, but he went decidedly old-school on Wednesday when things during practice got excessively chippy.
Video clips out of Oxnard have shown plenty of enthusiasm from Cowboys coaches and players- with music and dancing, guys celebrating good plays, and a level of physicality that's been noticeable.
It's manifested itself into several scuffles between teammates, which is, of course, a common occurrence at camp for most teams. Young players are literally fighting for roster spots and the attention of coaches, and there's often a disparity in how one player might attack a given practice rep as opposed to the man across from him.
But things went a little too far a little too frequently on Wednesday. Rookie offensive lineman Ajani Cornelius, the team's sixth-round pick out of Oregon, got himself ejected from practice for throwing a punch, according to ESPN's Todd Archer.
And after a third skirmish broke out during the day's work session, a livid Schottenheimer yelled for the entire team to assemble at midfield.
"You want to fight?" he reportedly screamed. "Let's [expletive] fight. Get your ass on the sideline!"
From there, he ordered his players to burn off their extra energy by running sideline-to-sideline, back and forth for several minutes, with several coaches also taking on the punishment before the day's practice was cut short.
They weren't exactly wind sprints. And overall, it was no Landry Mile, the infamous conditioning drill imposed in the early days by the Cowboys' first head coach, but it likely got Schottenheimer's message across to tone down the extracurricular activity.
At least one star veteran praised the coach's back-to-basics approach.
"I like what he's doing. We need discipline," wide receiver CeeDee Lamb explained afterward. "Shout out to him for that."

McMenamin: LeBron James is still monitoring the Lakers' moves

Ever since LeBron James opted into the final season of his contract in late June, there has been lots of speculation about his immediate future with the Los Angeles Lakers. That speculation stemmed from a statement his agent, Rich Paul, gave to ESPN that stated, in part, that the two "want to evaluate what's best" for the superstar moving forward. James is 40 years of age and is headed toward his record 23rd season in the NBA. It does appear he will start the new season as a member of the Lakers, but what happens afterward with him is anyone's guess, especially now that the franchise revolves around Luka Doncic, who just agreed to a three-year contract extension. ESPN's Dave McMenamin reported that James is supportive of Doncic being with the team, but that the four-time MVP is still looking at what the team will do to build a championship-caliber roster (at 10:42). "I'm told that the statement that Rich Paul gave to Shams Charania back in June when LeBron opted in still stands," McMenamin said. "LeBron and his representatives will be monitoring the Lakers' moves that they make, because they recognize that there's only a very limited amount of time left in his career and he wants to be competing for championships, whatever time that is." It has been rumored that James and his camp have been unhappy that the Lakers are now catering to Doncic and not James. However, Charania also reported that James is supportive of this shift. With Doncic now under contract for at least the next three years, Los Angeles can fully shift its focus to building a championship team around both superstars. Once James leaves, there's no telling how long it will take the team to find another star to put alongside Doncic, and therefore, now is the time for it to go for its 18th NBA championship, especially since Doncic made it clear that he wants to get a ring now. NFL Analyst Bashes Jerry Jones' Approach With Micah Parsons

Based on facts, either observed and verified firsthand by the reporter, or reported and verified from knowledgeable sources. For the second year in a row, the Dallas Cowboys find themselves in a standoff with one of their core pieces regarding a new contract. As things between Micah Parsons and the organization continue to escalate, one analyst did not hold back on his thoughts on Jerry Jones' approach. This ordeal stretches back months when Parsons first approached the Cowboys about an extension off of his rookie deal. The two sides seemed to be close to an agreement, which led to the star linebacker getting his agent involved. Since then, things have gone completely off the rails and become a worst-case scenario for Dallas. Parsons has remained a professional and stayed around the team in some capacity, but recently made his frustrations very public. In a long post on social media last week, he gave his thoughts on this ordeal while also telling the world he's requested a trade from the Cowboys. This led to many people giving their thoughts on the longtime owner's tactics. Among those who did not hold back when discussing Jones was FS1's Nick Wright. He dove into the situation on a recent episode of First Things First, dubbing his practices unethical. "Jerry feels like they had an agreement and he wants to stick to it. And I think that is an unethical way to do business," Wright said. "What I do not think is right is if a player does not think we are going to be talking about numbers and a contract. And then it comes up and he engages, to then be like alright, shook on it, you and I said deal's a deal. That is not Micah's expertise." Following his social media post, Jones gave his thoughts on the latest developments. He still expects the two sides to work things out, dismissing any notion that Dallas plans on honoring Parsons' request. As the Cowboys get ready to begin their preseason schedule, they have to deal with this very public back-and-forth hanging over their heads. Brian Schottenheimer's camp appearance labeled embarrassing for Cowboys' $12 billion sponsor

Brian Schottenheimer's camp appearance labeled embarrassing for Cowboys' $12 billion sponsor originally appeared on The Sporting News If the Dallas Cowboys aren't stirring up bad press, are they really making headlines? That seems to be the story lately, especially with the ongoing Micah Parsons contract drama. Parsons has dominated NFL chatter this week after the disgruntled linebacker made it clear on social media that he wants out of Dallas. But according to FS1's Colin Cowherd, Parsons might just be one piece of a bigger Cowboys problem. His latest gripe? Head coach Brian Schottenheimer's wardrobe. During Monday's press conference at Cowboys training camp in Oxnard, Schottenheimer addressed the media wearing his visor backward — and Cowherd couldn't let it slide. 'You know, I don't like backward hats. What's worse is a backward visor… That's a two-win team. I'm taking away four wins. That's awful. That's so bad,' Cowherd said. The longtime radio and TV host, notorious for his quirky takes on presentation and leadership, said Schottenheimer's look wasn't just a bad choice for him — it reflected poorly on the entire franchise. 📲 Follow The Sporting News on WhatsApp 'When you sit in front of a podium, you're representing the Cowboys. You're representing Bank of America. You're representing a $12 billion corporation. I think you gotta do better as a head coach than a visor backwards,' Cowherd said. This isn't Cowherd's first shot at Schottenheimer, either. Weeks ago, he predicted that the Cowboys would quickly regret the hire. 'Brian Schottenheimer is a one-and-done,' Cowherd said. 'Jerry will know by Thanksgiving he made a huge mistake. Forget the fact that Philadelphia and Washington will probably blow them out in the division twice. 'One and done' happens all the time now. 'I think Dallas is going to be humiliated on a lot of Sundays.' Hot takes are Cowherd's specialty, and this one fits the bill. But he's not entirely wrong that Schottenheimer was never a high-profile hire and wasn't on anyone else's radar. For a franchise already buried in controversy and scrutiny, even a backward visor is enough to fuel the fire.
