National Sports Policy Will Ensure All-Round Development Of Indian Sports: PM Narendra Modi
PM Modi stressed sports' importance for India's growth, launching the National Sports Policy to aid sports from schools to the Olympics, with new funding and stricter rules.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday called sports a key part of India's path to becoming a developed nation. He said the new National Sports Policy (NSP) will support sports development from the smallest schools to the elite Olympics.
In his Independence Day speech at the Red Fort, the PM noted that the country has changed a lot from the days when sports were not seen as a good career choice.
'Sports is an essential aspect of development and I am happy, that from the time when parents used to scoff at children spending time in sports, we have reached a point where it has changed. Now, parents are happy if children take interest in sports," Modi said, with guests like double Olympic-medallist shooter Manu Bhaker applauding.
'I consider it a good omen. It fills me with pride to see sports finding a space in Indian families. It is good for India's future," he added.
The NSP, approved by the cabinet on July 1, aims to hold administrators accountable and establish processes for ethical practices, fair play, and healthy competition in sports.
It includes creating national agencies and inter-ministerial committees for quick action and problem resolution. The policy also suggests new funding methods like 'Adopt an Athlete', 'Adopt a District', 'Adopt a Venue', 'One Corporate-One Sport', and 'One PSU-One State', where possible.
'To promote sports, we have come up with the National Sports Policy after several decades. It would ensure the development of sports, from school to the Olympics. We will develop an ecosystem, whether it is coaching, fitness or infrastructure. We will create an ecosystem that penetrates the farthest corner of the country," the PM declared.
Soon after the NSP, Sports Minister Mansukh Mandaviya pushed for and got the National Sports Governance Bill passed in Parliament. This bill provides stricter regulations for National Sports Federations and a clear dispute resolution system.
India's performance at the Olympics has been lacking, with the 2021 Tokyo Games yielding seven medals, including one gold, being its best result so far.
The Prime Minister also stressed that fitness is a crucial part of sports culture and that the country needs to tackle obesity by reducing oil consumption.
'When I talk of fitness and sports, I want to talk about obesity, which is a huge problem for the country. It is predicted that every third person is expected to be obese in future, we have to reduce consumption of oil to win this war on obesity," he said.

The Governor stressed that Independence Day is both a symbol of pride and a reminder of "our duties towards the nation". He urged every citizen to contribute to the unity, integrity, and progress of the nation and the state. "In this 'Amrit Kaal', we must resolve to contribute in our respective fields to ensure that India reaches the pinnacle of development and prosperity," he added.

The Centre has proposed new rates, allowing some relaxations and cutting down taxes on daily-use items and those under 28% tax slab under the revamped Goods and Services Tax (GST) structure, PTI quoted government sources as saying. The development comes just hours after Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced next-generation reforms in the GST by Diwali during his Independence Day speech. PM Modi had announced that as a gift to citizens, next-generation reforms to the GST will be introduced by Diwali.(ANI) Speaking from the ramparts of the Red Fort, PM Modi said it was time to reform GST, which has completed 8 years since its implementation in July 2017, including multiple direct taxes and local duties. Changes likely under renewed GST Two new rates: The central government has proposed two rates, 5 per cent and 18 per cent, under the revamped GST regime, news agency PTI reported, citing sources. Meanwhile, a special 40 per cent rate is likely to be levied on luxury goods, it added. Move from 12% to 5%: Citing government sources, the news agency reported that 99 per cent of the items that currently fall under the 12 per cent GST tax slab will be moved to the 5 per cent bracket under the renewed regime. Shift from 28% to 18%: Furthermore, around 90 per cent of taxable items in the 28 per cent bracket would be moved to the 18 per cent slab. With this renewed GST move, the Centre reportedly expects to give a major boost to consumption, which "will offset revenue loss due to rate rationalisation". What PM Modi said on GST In his Independence Day speech, PM Modi said that the central government will introduce next-generation GST reforms by Diwali, noting that discussions over the same have been held with states. 'We have discussed with states and will usher in next-generation GST reforms by Diwali, which will be a Diwali gift for citizens. Taxes on items used by the common man will be reduced substantially. Our MSMEs will benefit hugely. Daily-use items will become cheaper, which will also strengthen our economy,' he said. A Group of Ministers (GoM), including state finance ministers, is already working on rate rationalisation and the pruning of GST slabs. The Prime Minister also said that a task force will be set up to recommend all necessary GST reforms in a time-bound manner for the 21st century. He said that India must also focus on high-quality, affordable products to build a prosperous, self-reliant nation that honours the sacrifices of freedom fighters. The PM emphasised that self-reliance goes beyond imports, exports, or currency exchange. 'It is tied to our capabilities. When self-reliance begins to erode, so does our strength. To preserve, maintain, and enhance our capabilities, self-reliance is essential.' He said that India must focus on strengthening itself, not limiting others, to earn global respect amid the increasing economic self-interest.
