Yoenis Tellez to defend WBA Interim title to dangerous German contender

Yoenis Tellez to defend WBA Interim title to dangerous German contender originally appeared on The Sporting News WBA Interim super-welterweight champion, Yoenis 'El Bandolero' Tellez (10-0, 7 KOs), will defend his title to Germany's Abass Baraou (16-1, 9 KOs) over 12-rounds on the August 23rd Most Valuable Promotions Fight Night card at the Caribe Royale Resort in Orlando, Florida. Originally from Santiago de Cuba and now fighting out of Texas, Tellez is one of boxing's fastest-rising stars and is coming off a career-defining performance against former world champion Julian 'J-Rock' Williams. On March 1, 2025, at Brooklyn's Barclays Center, Tellez dominated the seasoned veteran to capture the WBA Interim belt at 154lbs, cementing his place among the division's elite. Now, he turns his focus to the highly skilled Baraou, who represents the toughest challenge yet in his young career, having beaten the likes of Brit boxers Sam Eggington and Macauley McGowan already. The Berlin boxer is the reigning European super-welterweight champion, who hasn't lost in five years. Tellez feels confident after his career-best win, but far from fulfilled, "Beating Julian Williams gave me a lot of confidence, but I'm not satisfied," the Cuban explained, who is co-promoted by Boxlab Promotions and Warriors Boxing. "I learned a lot from that fight, and I'm bringing that momentum into the ring against Baraou. He's a talented fighter, and I respect what he's done in his career. But on fight night, I'm going to show why I'm the champion." A victory over Baraou could set the stage for the 25-year-old talent to be elevated to WBA Regular Champion status—a position currently held by Terence Crawford. "This fight is a major step for me," Tellez continued. "When I win, I'll be in position to fight as the Regular Champion. That means big fights, big opportunities, and a chance to keep proving I'm the best at 154 pounds." Tellez will be showcased on DAZN for a second time in less than six months, giving fans worldwide a front-row seat to his journey. "Fighting on DAZN again is huge for me," Tellez added. "It's a global platform, and I want to keep building my name, so everyone knows who Yoenis Tellez is." Tickets are on sale now at

Journalist: Liverpool's new No.7 already impressing key figures at Anfield

Florian Wirtz Settling In at Liverpool with Premier League Goals in Sight Florian Wirtz, Liverpool's new record transfer and current No.7, is already showing why the club invested heavily to bring him in from Bayer Leverkusen. There is a maturity and calmness to the way he has integrated himself, both in terms of performances and mentality. After scoring in a pre-season match against Yokohama F. Marinos in Japan, Wirtz made his Anfield debut during Liverpool's second summer victory over Athletic Club. He may be new to the Premier League, but he's clearly not overawed by the occasion. Speaking after the match, Wirtz offered insight into how he's adapted to life on Merseyside. 'I think I am a player who needs freedom on the pitch and the manager gives it to me,' he said. 'Of course, I have to respect the position and the players around me, but I try to give my best on the pitch and find the right places. I have the freedom for this.' Wirtz has not taken long to look at home in a red shirt. He's already forging links with teammates and finding pockets of space with ease, something that will be vital when the league season gets underway. 'I came because I thought I could fit in this team and I am enjoying playing with these players. Every time it is getting a little bit better so I am happy with how it is going. I'm really enjoying the first weeks.' Looking Ahead to Domestic Glory There's no easing in for Wirtz. Liverpool's summer programme is complete, and now their focus turns to silverware. First up is the FA Community Shield against Crystal Palace at Wembley this Sunday. Following that, the Reds begin their title defence at Anfield with a match against AFC Bournemouth on Friday 15 August. While Wirtz is yet to play in the Premier League, he's not shying away from what lies ahead. 'I have not played a match in the Premier League but I am looking forward to it and that is why I came,' he explained. 'To be honest, I don't know [how it will be]. There will be some differences to the German league but I think that is also something I can learn and make me better, so I am really looking forward to it.' He's been told what to expect. 'They tell me it's more intense and more physical, every player is really strong, really fast. That is what everybody is telling me and I'm aware of that.' As any player who has transitioned from the Bundesliga will tell you, adapting to the Premier League is a steep learning curve. However, Wirtz appears ready for that challenge. He understands the need to graft as much off the ball as on it. 'The big challenge is to take the title again and it is the most difficult thing, so I try just to create chances and also work against the ball because I can also run a lot and I will try to bring this to the team,' he said. 'Then, with the ball, I hope I can make the team better and bring my teammates into better situations.' Photo: IMAGO Partnership with Ekitike Starting to Grow Another important piece of Liverpool's summer transfer business was the acquisition of Hugo Ekitike, formerly of Eintracht Frankfurt. Like Wirtz, he has also impressed in early friendlies. The pair are not only adjusting to life in a new league but are doing so side by side, a factor that may help their transition. Wirtz spoke highly of his new teammate. 'He is a really good player. I enjoyed watching him at Frankfurt and I was really happy that he decided to come to us. In the training sessions already, he went well and also in the game we had some combinations that were good. I am really happy that I can play with him.' It's not just about football either. Wirtz emphasised the importance of off-the-pitch support. 'It is good that we have a few players that come at the same time, so we can connect a little bit and talk to each other about how we deal with it. That helps when you come to a new team.' When it comes to squad building, chemistry is often overlooked. But from experience, it's clear that strong off-field relationships can translate into effective performances. Arne Slot has added players who seem to understand that, and that may prove vital once the real business begins. Premier League Demands Will Test Wirtz's Mettle Liverpool are no longer a team with something to prove. They are defending champions. That comes with pressure and expectation. Wirtz, as a record transfer, will naturally have eyes on him, but he seems up to the task. He's arrived not just to play his game, but to improve the team. Slot has a player in Wirtz who understands the need to contribute all over the pitch. He runs, tackles, presses and creates. It's exactly what is needed from a modern midfielder at the top level. With the right environment and the right manager, Wirtz has every chance of becoming one of the league's standout performers. He's settled in quickly, but there's still a long road ahead. He knows the expectations, and from all early signs, he's ready to meet them head-on.
