Journalist: Liverpool's new No.7 already impressing key figures at Anfield
Florian Wirtz, Liverpool's new record transfer and current No.7, is already showing why the club invested heavily to bring him in from Bayer Leverkusen. There is a maturity and calmness to the way he has integrated himself, both in terms of performances and mentality.
After scoring in a pre-season match against Yokohama F. Marinos in Japan, Wirtz made his Anfield debut during Liverpool's second summer victory over Athletic Club. He may be new to the Premier League, but he's clearly not overawed by the occasion.
Speaking after the match, Wirtz offered insight into how he's adapted to life on Merseyside. 'I think I am a player who needs freedom on the pitch and the manager gives it to me,' he said. 'Of course, I have to respect the position and the players around me, but I try to give my best on the pitch and find the right places. I have the freedom for this.'
Wirtz has not taken long to look at home in a red shirt. He's already forging links with teammates and finding pockets of space with ease, something that will be vital when the league season gets underway. 'I came because I thought I could fit in this team and I am enjoying playing with these players. Every time it is getting a little bit better so I am happy with how it is going. I'm really enjoying the first weeks.'
Looking Ahead to Domestic Glory
There's no easing in for Wirtz. Liverpool's summer programme is complete, and now their focus turns to silverware. First up is the FA Community Shield against Crystal Palace at Wembley this Sunday. Following that, the Reds begin their title defence at Anfield with a match against AFC Bournemouth on Friday 15 August.
While Wirtz is yet to play in the Premier League, he's not shying away from what lies ahead. 'I have not played a match in the Premier League but I am looking forward to it and that is why I came,' he explained. 'To be honest, I don't know [how it will be]. There will be some differences to the German league but I think that is also something I can learn and make me better, so I am really looking forward to it.'
He's been told what to expect. 'They tell me it's more intense and more physical, every player is really strong, really fast. That is what everybody is telling me and I'm aware of that.'
As any player who has transitioned from the Bundesliga will tell you, adapting to the Premier League is a steep learning curve. However, Wirtz appears ready for that challenge. He understands the need to graft as much off the ball as on it. 'The big challenge is to take the title again and it is the most difficult thing, so I try just to create chances and also work against the ball because I can also run a lot and I will try to bring this to the team,' he said. 'Then, with the ball, I hope I can make the team better and bring my teammates into better situations.'

Partnership with Ekitike Starting to Grow
Another important piece of Liverpool's summer transfer business was the acquisition of Hugo Ekitike, formerly of Eintracht Frankfurt. Like Wirtz, he has also impressed in early friendlies. The pair are not only adjusting to life in a new league but are doing so side by side, a factor that may help their transition.
Wirtz spoke highly of his new teammate. 'He is a really good player. I enjoyed watching him at Frankfurt and I was really happy that he decided to come to us. In the training sessions already, he went well and also in the game we had some combinations that were good. I am really happy that I can play with him.'
It's not just about football either. Wirtz emphasised the importance of off-the-pitch support. 'It is good that we have a few players that come at the same time, so we can connect a little bit and talk to each other about how we deal with it. That helps when you come to a new team.'
When it comes to squad building, chemistry is often overlooked. But from experience, it's clear that strong off-field relationships can translate into effective performances. Arne Slot has added players who seem to understand that, and that may prove vital once the real business begins.
Premier League Demands Will Test Wirtz's Mettle
Liverpool are no longer a team with something to prove. They are defending champions. That comes with pressure and expectation. Wirtz, as a record transfer, will naturally have eyes on him, but he seems up to the task.
He's arrived not just to play his game, but to improve the team. Slot has a player in Wirtz who understands the need to contribute all over the pitch. He runs, tackles, presses and creates. It's exactly what is needed from a modern midfielder at the top level.
With the right environment and the right manager, Wirtz has every chance of becoming one of the league's standout performers. He's settled in quickly, but there's still a long road ahead. He knows the expectations, and from all early signs, he's ready to meet them head-on.

Juventus eye Arsenal defender in surprise summer transfer
Juventus eye Arsenal defender in surprise summer transfer originally appeared on The Sporting News Juventus have identified Arsenal defender Jakub Kiwior as a potential replacement for Lloyd Kelly if the Englishman leaves the club this summer, Sporting News understands. The Serie A giants are weighing up a move for Kiwior, who has attracted interest from several European clubs in recent months. Kelly joined Juventus from Newcastle in January on an initial loan deal with an obligation to buy for £14.7 million ($18.7m). He had joined Newcastle only the previous summer on a free transfer from Bournemouth and made just 10 appearances before making the switch to Italy. Kiwior, 25, signed for Arsenal from Spezia in January 2023 for a fee of £20 million ($25.5m). The Poland international has struggled to cement a regular starting place in Mikel Arteta's side, making just 10 Premier League starts last season. 📲 Follow The Sporting News on WhatsApp Porto attempted to sign Kiwior earlier this summer but dropped their interest after Arsenal made it clear they would only consider offers in the region of £26 million ($33.2m). Despite the limited game time, Arteta is understood to be keen to keep Kiwior, who is valued for his versatility across the backline. The Arsenal boss publicly praised the defender in May following a run of games that came while Gabriel Magalhaes was sidelined with a hamstring issue. "He deserves a lot of credit because he hasn't played too much throughout many months, and suddenly he's been thrown into the most difficult context, at the highest level, playing against the best opponents," Arteta said. "I think he's been exceptional." With Gabriel yet to feature in pre-season, Kiwior is expected to start alongside William Saliba in Arsenal's Premier League opener against Manchester United on 17 August. Who else could leave Arsenal this summer? Elsewhere, midfielder Fabio Vieira is in talks with Bundesliga side Stuttgart over a permanent move. The 25-year-old is surplus to requirements at the Emirates after an underwhelming three-year spell. Signed from Porto for £30 million ($38.3m), he made 49 appearances and returned to his boyhood club on loan last season. His departure would clear further space in midfield, especially following the rise of teenager Ethan Nwaneri, who has impressed Arteta and the coaching staff. Reiss Nelson is also in talks over a potential return to Fulham. The 24-year-old winger has struggled for regular playing time at Arsenal and could leave the club permanently if a deal is agreed. Real Madrid could accept Rodrygo swap for Premier League star
Real Madrid could accept Rodrygo swap for Premier League star originally appeared on The Sporting News As the La Liga transfer window enters its final weeks the main exit story at Real Madrid has taken an unexpected turn at the Estadio Santiago Bernabeu. The club have already brought in Franco Mastantuono, Trent Alexander-Arnold, Alvaro Carreras and Dean Huijsen this summer, but there is still room for more activity, if the right opportunity comes along. One possible move could involve Rodrygo Goes leaving the Spanish capital, which could open the path for the arrival of a top central defender before the market closes. Earlier in the window Defensa Central [via Football365] said Arsenal made an 'offer' to Los Blancos to swap Rodrygo for William Saliba in a bold transfer change. The 24-year-old French defender is out of contract with the Gunners in 2027 and has become one of the most in demand centre backs in Europe. Arsenal's initial approach this summer has been to strengthen their front line and that could now force a sale. 📲 Follow The Sporting News on WhatsApp Real Madrid could swap Rodrygo for Saliba In their latest update the Spanish outlet claim Real Madrid could accept a swap if the circumstances are right. The club have shifted focus back to Saliba with Liverpool's Ibrahima Konate the other option. Getty Images Although the swap deal is not officially on the table, reports suggest Real Madrid could still consider it, if Mikel Arteta is in favour. Rodrygo is increasingly viewed as expendable in Xabi Alonso's plans, and strengthening the central defensive positions remains a top priority for the club, which sees the final weeks of the window as crucial. Marcus Rashford remains confident in Barcelona's player registration plan
Marcus Rashford remains confident in Barcelona's player registration plan originally appeared on The Sporting News FC Barcelona remain in the midst of a financial crisis, which has significantly impacted their transfer strategy over the past few seasons. And just like in recent years, they head into the 2025-26 campaign with issues revolving around player registration. Last season, it was Dani Olmo and Pau Víctor who were given temporary permits to play in La Liga through the month of December before the Consejo Superior de Deportes approved both players' registrations for the remainder of the campaign. This year, the club still need to register five players for the upcoming season before the Sept. 1 deadline. Among those players — a list that includes two contributors from last year (Gerard Martín and Wojciech Szczęsny) and two new signings (Joan García from RCD Espanyol and Roony Bardghji from FC Copenhagen) — is Marcus Rashford, Barcelona's highest-profile addition this summer. Despite the recent troubles Barcelona have experienced with player registration, Rashford told reporters he is not worried about missing La Liga games because of it. "It's something for the club to sort out," Rashford said in a video posted on Spanish newspaper Sport's website on Aug. 3. "I believe they are going to get it sorted. I just focus on training and be ready for the start of the season." Rashford, who is still under contract at parent club Manchester United, made his move to Barcelona official on July 23. It marked his second loan stint of the year, as the Red Devils sent Rashford on loan to Aston Villa for the remainder of the 2024-25 Premier League season in early February. This time around, he will be with Barcelona for the full 2025-26 campaign. Soon after his loan went official, Rashford joined the squad on its Asia Tour. He made his debut for the Blaugrana in a 45-minute stint against FC Seoul on July 31 and then scored his first goal against Daegu FC four days later. Barcelona still have one more match on their summer calendar — a Joan Gamper Trophy exhibition match against Como. But after weeks of preseason training and friendlies, Rashford is excited for the season to come. "It's been a good preseason. It's been good to integrate into the team. I've enjoyed getting used to the team, used to the coach," Rashford said, via ESPN's Adriana Garcia. "There is a lot of great players, but I knew that before I came here. The quality is very high, the intensity is very high, and this is what we need to continue having throughout the season. "Hopefully, we can go one step further than last season and win the Champions League."
