Florian Wirtz Settling In at Liverpool with Premier League Goals in Sight
Florian Wirtz, Liverpool's new record transfer and current No.7, is already showing why the club invested heavily to bring him in from Bayer Leverkusen. There is a maturity and calmness to the way he has integrated himself, both in terms of performances and mentality.
After scoring in a pre-season match against Yokohama F. Marinos in Japan, Wirtz made his Anfield debut during Liverpool's second summer victory over Athletic Club. He may be new to the Premier League, but he's clearly not overawed by the occasion.
Speaking after the match, Wirtz offered insight into how he's adapted to life on Merseyside. 'I think I am a player who needs freedom on the pitch and the manager gives it to me,' he said. 'Of course, I have to respect the position and the players around me, but I try to give my best on the pitch and find the right places. I have the freedom for this.'
Wirtz has not taken long to look at home in a red shirt. He's already forging links with teammates and finding pockets of space with ease, something that will be vital when the league season gets underway. 'I came because I thought I could fit in this team and I am enjoying playing with these players. Every time it is getting a little bit better so I am happy with how it is going. I'm really enjoying the first weeks.'
Looking Ahead to Domestic Glory
There's no easing in for Wirtz. Liverpool's summer programme is complete, and now their focus turns to silverware. First up is the FA Community Shield against Crystal Palace at Wembley this Sunday. Following that, the Reds begin their title defence at Anfield with a match against AFC Bournemouth on Friday 15 August.
While Wirtz is yet to play in the Premier League, he's not shying away from what lies ahead. 'I have not played a match in the Premier League but I am looking forward to it and that is why I came,' he explained. 'To be honest, I don't know [how it will be]. There will be some differences to the German league but I think that is also something I can learn and make me better, so I am really looking forward to it.'
He's been told what to expect. 'They tell me it's more intense and more physical, every player is really strong, really fast. That is what everybody is telling me and I'm aware of that.'
As any player who has transitioned from the Bundesliga will tell you, adapting to the Premier League is a steep learning curve. However, Wirtz appears ready for that challenge. He understands the need to graft as much off the ball as on it. 'The big challenge is to take the title again and it is the most difficult thing, so I try just to create chances and also work against the ball because I can also run a lot and I will try to bring this to the team,' he said. 'Then, with the ball, I hope I can make the team better and bring my teammates into better situations.'

Partnership with Ekitike Starting to Grow
Another important piece of Liverpool's summer transfer business was the acquisition of Hugo Ekitike, formerly of Eintracht Frankfurt. Like Wirtz, he has also impressed in early friendlies. The pair are not only adjusting to life in a new league but are doing so side by side, a factor that may help their transition.
Wirtz spoke highly of his new teammate. 'He is a really good player. I enjoyed watching him at Frankfurt and I was really happy that he decided to come to us. In the training sessions already, he went well and also in the game we had some combinations that were good. I am really happy that I can play with him.'
It's not just about football either. Wirtz emphasised the importance of off-the-pitch support. 'It is good that we have a few players that come at the same time, so we can connect a little bit and talk to each other about how we deal with it. That helps when you come to a new team.'
When it comes to squad building, chemistry is often overlooked. But from experience, it's clear that strong off-field relationships can translate into effective performances. Arne Slot has added players who seem to understand that, and that may prove vital once the real business begins.
