Saudi envoy leads maritime safety talks in London
Kamal Al-Junaidi is the first Arab to preside over the committee, creating a milestone for both the Kingdom and the Arab world in maritime governance, the Saudi Press Agency reported on Sunday.
His role also reflects Saudi Arabia's growing presence in international maritime organizations and commitment to advancing maritime communication and safety systems.
Al-Junaidi managed the sessions and acted as a neutral facilitator, helping member states reach consensus on key issues, including oversight of the Global Maritime Distress and Safety System, implementation of Long Range Tracking and Safety standards and audit reviews for satellite communication providers.
He also led discussions on proposed maritime safety regulation amendments, monitored the organization's strategic direction to ensure alignment with IMO standards and submitted the committee's recommendations to the General Assembly.
The 51st session took place at the IMO headquarters in London, with representatives from 44 countries engaging in in-depth discussions on key maritime challenges.

France backs joint appeal with Saudi Arabia on Gaza proposing UN-led mission
DUBAI: French Foreign Minister Jean-Noël Barrot voiced support on Tuesday for a joint appeal made with Saudi Arabia at the United Nations for the release of hostages, the disarmament of Hamas, and its exclusion from any future role in governing a Palestinian state. Warning that any expansion of Israeli military operations into Gaza City and the Al-Mawasi area would be 'a recipe for disaster,' the minister said such a move would cause more civilian casualties, endanger hostages, and risk turning the conflict into a war without end. On Sunday, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu laid out his vision of victory in Gaza following 22 months of war - with the military ordered to attack the last remaining Hamas strongholds in Gaza City and the central camps further south. With a pre-war population of some 760,000, according to official figures, Gaza City was the biggest of any municipal area in the Palestinian territories. The Barrot called for a permanent ceasefire, the protection of civilians, and the large-scale delivery of humanitarian aid, while proposing a temporary international stabilization mission under a UN mandate to lay the groundwork for lasting peace. The Security Council should mandate this mission, the minister said, adding that work with international partners had already begun. 'It's the only credible way of ending permanent war and building peace and stability in the region. Let's not waste any time,' he said.

Saudi cabinet condemns Gaza military operations, says Israel committing ‘ethnic cleansing'
Saudi Arabia's cabinet on Tuesday condemned Israel's decision to expand military operations in the Gaza Strip saying that Israel is committing 'ethnic cleansing' against the Palestinians. The cabinet held a session in NEOM chaired by Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman. 'The cabinet strongly and vehemently condemns Israeli occupation's decision to occupy the Gaza Strip and condemns its persistence in committing crimes of starvation, brutal practices and ethnic cleansing against the brotherly Palestinian people,' according to the Saudi Press Agency (SPA). The Saudi cabinet said that it 'stresses that the international community's and Security Council's continued inability to halt these assaults and violations undermines the basis of the international system and international legitimacy.' Israel last week approved a much-criticized plan to take control of Gaza City with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu saying that he had no choice but to 'complete the job' and defeat Hamas to free hostages seized from Israel.
