One of South Africa's largest mobile operators, MTN, has introduced a new pilot service called Shesh@5G, offering SIM card and home internet package deliveries within two hours.
In recent years, South Africa has seen significant growth in delivery services, with companies such as Checkers Sixty60, Uber Eats, Mr D, and Takealot expanding rapidly.
The motorbike-based delivery service is currently being rolled out in selected areas of Johannesburg and is intended to give customers quicker access to MTN's 5G connectivity services.
This initiative follows MTN's recent 'Smartphone For All' campaign, which plans to provide over 1.2 million customers with 4G smartphones for R99.
Tania Ladopoulou, General Manager for Online and Telesales at MTN South Africa, said that the mobile operator focused on ensuring that "our Home customers enjoy the best possible experience".
'This is another ambition to bring seamless 5G Home connectivity to customers. As South Africa's best and strong 5G network, we are focused on ensuring that our Home customers enjoy the best possible experience with the country's most reliable and fastest 5G coverage.
'No more waiting 24 to 48 hours for delivery. No more standing in queues with this new service, we are putting our customers first by delivering convenience, speed, and connection right to their doorstep.'
According to MTN, customers can place orders through the company's digital platforms. A motorbike courier then delivers the SIM card or home internet package within two hours.
Customers can also complete self-registration using the MTN app, allowing them to activate services quickly after delivery.
'This is not just about faster service, it's about inclusion,' said Ladopoulou.
'We believe that everyone deserves a modern connected life, and they shouldn't have to wait for it. Whether you're connecting for the first time or upgrading to Shesh@5G, MTN is putting the power of instant connectivity in your hands.'

MTN, Turkcell legal wrangle over allegations of bribery continues

Turkcell is set to oppose MTN's bid in the Constitutional Court Image: supplied Turkish mobile network operator, Turkcel, is set to oppose MTN's bid in the Constitutional Court to appeal a recent ruling that will allow allegations of bribery against MTN to be heard in South Africa. MTN, Africa's largest mobile network operator, approached the Constitutional Court arguing that South Africa doesn't have jurisdiction to hear legal bids over alleged corruption in Iran, and the matter should be heard there. In April, the Supreme Court of Appeal (SCA) allowed Turkcell to present evidence alleging MTN committed bribery and corruption to overturn an Iranian GSM licence award. The SCA ruling marked the first time a South African court determined whether misconduct allegations abroad could be heard locally. On Thursday, Turkcell said it was opposing MTN's application to the Constitutional Court. In a statement, it said that this was 'in Turkcell's ongoing pursuit of justice for damages estimated at over $4.2 billion, stemming from allegations that MTN paid bribes to Iranian and South African officials to overturn a public tender awarded initially to Turkcell for a multi-billion-dollar GSM telecom license in Iran'. Should Turkcell be victorious in its defence of MTN's appeal, Turkcell can take its allegations of bribery to the Johannesburg High Court. Its previous bid, two years ago, failed with a finding then by that court that South Africa was not the correct geography to hear the matter. This is the decision that has been overturned through the SCA ruling. Turkcell's legal wrangle with MTN dates back more than a decade, when it initially approached the US courts in an action it later retracted, contending that MTN secured its 49% stake in a telecommunications licence in Iran through bribery. Turkcell said that the local 'case has significant implications for South Africa's stance on international bribery and corruption'. The Turkish operator argues that MTN paid off both Iranian and South African officials to overturn a public tender, which it lost to Turkcell, for a multi-billion-dollar opportunity to run an Iranian GSM telecom licence. MTN has denied these allegations, publicly stating that it has always 'maintained that the Turkcell litigation was without merit and has expressed confidence that it would successfully defend these proceedings'. In 2012, the UK's Lord Leonard Hoffmann released a report that exonerated MTN of any shady dealings in securing the licence. In part, the report stated: 'All the allegations are a fabric of lies, distortions and inventions.' Cedric Soule, counsel for Turkcell, said that MTN's reliance on this report, which its commissioned, is improper as 'the process that MTN put together lacked the independence, rigour and transparency of a judicial proceeding'. Soule added that 'the Hoffmann Committee failed to interview key witnesses, did not independently gather or assess evidence, and did not use independent counsel; its conclusions are therefore unreliable and irrelevant to the current proceedings'. MTN, however, has said that 'these claims were the subject of a comprehensive and independent investigation led by Lord Hoffmann, the findings of which did not support the allegations'. The Constitutional Court will now decide whether to grant the request for leave to appeal filed by MTN and the other defendants. Turkcell expects a decision within three months.

Kelvin Momo and Adam Howard set to dazzle at the Red Bull Symphonic

Kelvin Momo will headline the 2025 edition of the genre-defying experience, accompanied by none other than Adam Howard and the Egoli Symphonic Orchestra. Picture: Timothy Bernard/Independent Media Image: Timothy Bernard/Independent Media The Red Bull Symphonic: Kelvin Momo with Adam Howard and the Egoli Symphonic Orchestra is days away and excitement and nerves are in the air. Red Bull Symphonic organisers have not announced any changes to the big day and Kelvin Momo has been spotted attending rehearsals. Fans are excited to hear Kelvin Momo's music reimagined with a live orchestra but some are sitting on the edge of their seats in anticipation to see whether the hit producer will make his performance. Questions regarding the artist's dependability are increasing among his fanbase, particularly concerning his attendance at the Red Bull Symphonic event. In videos shared online, Kelvin Momo has been joining the orchestra during rehearsals with insiders confirming his attendance. This is Red Bull's second year hosting the Symphonic and South Africa and the private piano hitmaker follows in the footsteps of Kabza De Small. He'll be collaborating with Kelvin Momo, the pioneer of 'private school Amapiano.' Known for his smooth, jazz-influenced compositions, Momo's sound offers the perfect canvas for orchestral expansion. 'We've selected songs that tell a story — a journey through Kelvin's catalogue, paying homage to where he started and where he is now,' said Howard. 'His music is rich with harmony, structure, and jazz influences. My job is to enhance that with an orchestral backdrop without losing the soul of what's already there.' Video Player is loading. Next Stay Close ✕ Howard was a part of the first symphonic and even received a standing ovation for his solo performance. 'Last year was an amazing experience. I was the musical director, did all the arrangements, and played in the orchestra. I thought I'd come down and play a solo or two, I didn't expect it to go down so well!' Howard remarks. The response from the audience was electric, with the entire auditorium erupting during his impromptu solo moments. That unexpected enthusiasm helped catapult him to the forefront of this year's show. Having played with the likes of Brothers of Peace, Kalawa Jazmee, Brenda Fassie, and more, Howard is no stranger to the limelight. But what made last year's Red Bull Symphonic with Kabza De Small unique was the way it merged classical orchestration with contemporary sounds, a fusion not commonly seen in traditional orchestras. 'There's never been a time in an orchestra where someone stands up and plays over Amapiano music,' he said, beaming. 'It was a real visual moment, two worlds colliding. 'We encouraged the orchestra to not just play the notes, but to really get into the spirit of the music.' This year, that vision takes an even bolder step forward. Howard has been tasked with curating a bespoke orchestra for the event, reimagining what a symphony orchestra can look and sound like. The Red Bull Symphonic: Kelvin Momo with Adam Howard and the Egoli Symphonic Orchestra takes place over three days June 6, 7 and 8 at The Teatro, Montecasino. IOL Entertainment

Can anyone challenge Gerda Steyn 'The Smiling Assassin' at the Comrades Marathon?

DIFFICULT TO PREDICT? Gerda Steyn (pictured), a three-time Comrades Marathon champion and six-time Two Oceans winner, faces strong competition from Irvette van Zyl, who possesses incredible speed and endurance, as they prepare for the Comrades Marathon down run in Pietermaritzburg. Picture: Henk Kruger Independent Media Gerda Steyn will once again have a massive target on her back when she lines up in Pietermaritzburg for the Comrades Marathon down run on Sunday. That's for good reason though, as the three-time champion will be difficult to beat if her race goes according to plan. Last year, Steyn's incredible time of five hours, 49 minutes and 46 seconds (5:49:56) bettered her own 'up-run' record by almost 10 minutes. 'The Smiling Assassin' will also be looking to achieve the 'rare double' of winning the Two Oceans and Comrades Marathon in the same year for the fourth time.
