THE HISTORY OF PENNEYS
THE Penneys brand grew from humble beginnings on Dublin's Mary Street, where it opened its first store in 1969.
Known as
Penneys branched into the UK in 1973 with its first store opening in Derby. The UK now has 191 Primark stores in total.
However, the Penneys name could not travel to Britain as the American retailer JC Penney had the right to use the name in the region.
And in 2006, the expansion into Europe began with an opening in Spain, followed by the Netherlands, Portugal, Germany, Belgium, Austria, France and Italy.
Primark went Stateside for the first time in September 2015, with the opening of a store in Boston. There are now 27 stores in America with branches in Florida, Brooklyn, Pennsylvania and New Jersey.
The retailer's opened its largest store in Birmingham in 2019.
It spans five floors and features Primark's biggest beauty studio to date, a barbers and three restaurants.

VIPs arrive in Venice as Bezos wedding festivities begin
VIPs have been whizzing by speed boat through Venice as the three-day wedding party of businessman Jeff Bezos and journalist Lauren Sánchez begins, amid protests in the Italian city. They have reportedly invited about 200 guests to their multi-million euro nuptials, which are expected to begin with an open-air soiree in the cloisters of the 14th-century Madonna dell'Orto Church. The couple arrived in Venice yesterday. Ms Sánchez, 55, was spotted in a black dress with silver sequins - one of 27 outfits that she will reportedly wear during the festivities. People, some wearing carnival masks, demonstrated in St Mark's Square, accusing authorities of pandering to the super rich while the city drowns under tourists. As police broke up the protest, Veneto region president Luca Zaia said the couple will donate €3 million to the city - up from an initial €1m. Wedding guests and their bodyguards nipped up and down the lagoon, closely followed by paparazzi in boats rented at exorbitant prices by the world's media. Police on jet-skis patrolled the canals around the church as the party hour neared. Guests spotted include Jordan's Queen Rania, British actor Orlando Bloom, US football player Tom Brady, Ivanka Trump - daughter of US President Donald Trump - and American fashion designer Spencer Antle. US reality TV personalities Kim and Khloe Kardashian were snapped climbing into water taxis in stilettos, followed by talk show host Oprah Winfrey in an all-white outfit and runners. Billionaire Mr Bezos, 61, and Ms Sánchez, a former news presenter and entertainment reporter, are staying at the Aman hotel, a luxury 16th-century palazzo on the Grand Canal with a view of the Rialto Bridge. They will exchange vows tomorrow at a black-tie ceremony on the island of San Giorgio Maggiore, according to Italian media reports. The wedding itself is expected to take place in a vast open-air amphitheatre on the island, which sits across from St Mark's Square. The newlyweds are to be serenaded by Matteo Bocelli, son of famed opera singer Andrea Bocelli, the reports said. The celebrations will reportedly end on Saturday with a party at the Arsenale, a vast shipyard complex dating to when the city was a naval powerhouse. Some locals say the A-list guests and their entourages bring good business. Adriana, 83, said that "everyone wins" with the high-profile event, which has Venice's famed luxury hotels booked out, and is likely to inspire others to marry there. Samuel Silvestri, a 55-year-old shopkeeper and resident, said the city's problem is day-trippers - "not the sort of tourism that turns Venice into a little Monte Carlo". But critics have accused Mr Bezos of using the UNESCO site as his personal playground. Environmental activists have also pointed to the carbon footprint of the mega yachts and dozens of private jets bringing the rich and famous to the city. It is "an excessive display of wealth and greed", 51-year-old US tourist Christine Baker said.

Dallas and Happy Days stars film Irish pub documentary with visit to iconic Cork bar
Dallas star Patrick Duffy and Happy Days actor Linda Purl have been on a tour of Ireland and recently made a stop at one of Cork City's most iconic pubs. The pair, who have been in a relationship since 2020, posed for photos in the famous Hi-B bar. They are believed to be filming a documentary about Irish pubs. The TV stars previously visited Ireland in 2022 to trace Duffy's Irish roots and to film the pilot episode of a new TV series. Duffy shot to fame in the late 1970s and 1980s when he played Bobby Ewing in the hit American soap Dallas. Purl is best known as Ashley Pfister, Fonzie's girlfriend, in the US sitcom Happy Days. Posting a picture on social media, the Hi-B said they enjoyed a "great morning of filming" with the two stars in the bar. "Really looking forward to seeing the documentary at Christmas." The Hi-B, or the Hibernian Bar, is renowned for being one of the smallest pubs in Cork. Located on Oliver Plunkett Street, the bar has become synonymous with its mobile phone ban, with staff encouraging punters to enjoy conversation and each other's company instead. US basketball icon Steph Curry pictured playing golf with family in Ireland
He's renowned as the finest marksman in American basketball history, and this week in Kerry, NBA superstar Steph Curry demonstrated his off-court shooting prowess. The Golden State Warriors point guard, currently on a family holiday, was spotted at the famous Waterville Golf Links in the county on Monday afternoon. Joining him were two fellow NBA luminaries - his brother Seth and brother-in-law Damion Lee - along with their father, ex-player turned pundit Dell Curry. The group, boasting a combined net worth running into hundreds of millions, were seen savouring takeaway coffees from the clubhouse, and didn't miss the chance to snap photos with awe-struck staff before they hit the first tee. Curry's visit coincides with Ireland's peak 'Golf Season', a time when celebrity sightings reach an all-time high as affluent stars jet in from around the globe to experience the country's picturesque golf courses. One of the most memorable encounters occurred in 2022, when Hollywood actor and Anchorman star Will Ferrell was spotted enjoying a few rounds at the Old Head golf club in Kinsale. Steph undoubtedly held the most 'star power' - widely recognised as the greatest three-point shooter in NBA history. He joined the Golden State Warriors in 2009, and has since become a four-time NBA Champion, been chosen for eleven NBA All-Star games and amassed a net worth of approximately $250m, reports Cork Beo. The Waterville Golf Links club shared snaps of the encounter with NBA royalty yesterday, saying: "A very warm welcome to NBA legends Steph Curry, Seth Curry, their father Dell Curry, and fellow NBA star Damion Lee to Waterville Golf Links. It was an honour to host such incredible talent from the basketball world - we hope you enjoyed your day on the links!"
