Song Sun-mi
On the latest episode of TV Chosun's show 'Perfect Life', actress
Song Sun-mi
got real about the joys and challenges of raising her daughter alone. When asked if
single parenting
feels tough, Song casually shrugged it off: "Honestly, I don't really find it difficult. It's all about perspective." For Song, the hardest days were when her daughter was little and needed someone to play with non-stop-by the end of the day, even a seasoned actress could need a body double!
Still, she says she never hesitated to rely on her own support network. "There were times I'd ask my manager to come over and entertain her," Song laughed.
Tragedy and resilience
Song Sun-mi's journey wasn't always so breezy. In 2006, she married art director Ko Woo-seok. The couple welcomed their daughter in 2014. But just three years later, Ko Woo-seok was murdered in an incident that shocked South Korea. Police investigations revealed he was targeted by a relative in a bitter feud over a family inheritance. The mastermind behind the crime received a life sentence, while the court ordered Song Sun-mi to receive compensation of KRW1.3 billion.
Despite the tragedy, Song made a conscious decision not to live as a victim. She told viewers, "I realized that living proactively and showing my daughter a mother who loves herself is the best support I can give her."
Redefining single motherhood
Song admits that being a single mom once worried her-especially about her daughter growing up and seeing the world differently. But soon, she learned that how she saw herself made all the difference. "If I live as a victim, my child will see life from that lens too. I want her to witness a mother who is strong, proud, and in charge of her own story."
In her own words
Song Sun-mi's candidness breaks down the stereotype that single parenthood is always a struggle. Instead, she's all about community, self-care, and moving forward with humour and heart. For single moms-and single dads, or just anyone raising a child solo in any culture-she sends a clear message: you may be raising a child by yourself, but you never have to do it alone.
