Five dead after gunman 'sprays lobby' of New York office building
A fifth victim was also in critical condition after being shot, while the gunman apparently took his own life, New York City Mayor Eric Adams told a late-night briefing at a hospital near the scene of the shooting.
The gunman was caught on surveillance footage leaving a black BMW carrying an M-4 rifle before entering the building, immediately opening fire on a police officer before 'spraying the lobby' with bullets, police commissioner Jessica Tisch told a press conference.
An office tower block at 345 Park Avenue – home to hedge fund giant Blackstone, auditor KPMG and the National Football League – was apparently targeted by the gunman, Tisch said. She said that the suspect was believed to have acted alone.
Tisch gave the shooter's name as Shane Tamura from Las Vegas and said a revolver, ammunition and magazines were found in his vehicle. She said Tamura had a history of mental health issues. Shane Tamura, pictured entering the office tower block at 345 Park Avenue.
The incident began around 18:00 pm (22:00 GMT) when reports of gunfire prompted hundreds of police to swarm a busy office district on the storied Park Avenue, an area popular with tourists and visiting businesspeople.
A worker from a nearby office building wept as she left the area after a local lockdown was lifted, while another described a gunman going floor to floor as staff prepared to leave for the day.
'We lost four souls to another act of senseless violence,' Adams said, without counting the gunman who also died, apparently by a self-inflicted gunshot.
Adams said the fallen police officer, an immigrant from Bangladesh who was 36 years old, was among the dead.
Two other males and a female died and another man remained in a critical condition, officials said without giving any preliminary motive for the shootings.
Office worker Shad Sakib told AFP that he was packing his things to leave work when a public address announcement warned him and his colleagues to shelter in place.
'Everyone was confused with like, 'wait, what's going on?' And then someone finally realised that it's online, that someone walked in with a machine gun,' said the witness who wore a grey suit jacket.
'He walked right into a building right next door. We saw the photo of him walking through the same area that I walked through to get lunch here.
'You would think it won't happen to you, and then it does.'
Another witness, a woman who declined to give her name as she left the vicinity of the shooting, told AFP : 'I was in the building. He went floor by floor,' while a second woman wept as she left the scene.
There have been 254 mass shootings in the United States this year including Monday's incident in New York, according to the Gun Violence Archive – which defines a mass shooting as four or more people shot.
Police officers deployed a drone near Park Avenue at the height of the evening rush-hour as dozens of officers swarmed the area, some carrying long guns and others wearing ballistic vests.
Police repeatedly pushed back journalists and members of the public who gathered to see what was happening in the normally calm but busy area of Midtown Manhattan.
The area is home to several five-star business hotels, as well as a number of corporate headquarters and financial and law firms.
New York Governor Kathy Hochul said she had been briefed on the shooting.
The frontrunner in the race for mayor Zohran Mamdani wrote on X that he was 'heartbroken to learn of the horrific shooting in midtown and I am holding the victims, their families, and the NYPD officer… in my thoughts.'

Ballistic testing links Katiso 'KT' Molefe to AK-47 rifle used in murders of DJ Sumbody, DJ Vintos
JOHANNESBURG - An AK-47 rifle has connected the murders of popular musicians, including Oupa Sefoka, and other high-profile killings linked to controverial businessman, Katiso "KT" Molefe. Molefe returned to the Alexandra Magistrate's Court with three others for the murder of Sefoka, who was better known as DJ Sumbody. But police revealed that the dodgy businessman had also been charged for the murder of another musician, Hector Buthelezi, known as DJ Vintos. His co-accused have also been charged for another hit. Katiso "KT" Molefe is already facing murder charges for the hit on Vereening engineer, Armand Swart, in April 2024. Last week, he was charged for being the alleged mastermind behind DJ Sumbody's murder and on Tuesday he was linked to the killing of another popular musician, DJ Vintos. The police's Athlenda Mathe said the links we made through ballistic testing. "The AK47 and the three pistols that were found on the Armand Swart case and were linked to his case, we're linking it to the killing of DJ Vintos and the killing of DJ Sumbody and his bodyguards." Mathe said that the same gun was also linked to the 2023 hit on a man identified as Don Tindleni, who was shot while driving in his BMW on the N1 highway in March 2023. Mathe said that apart from the ballistic evidence, the police had more solid evidence against Molefe and his co-accused.

Hercules cable theft suspects arrested after alert resident tips off police
An armed robbery at a storage site west of Pretoria has led to arrests, after community vigilance and a rapid response from both police and private security helped intercept stolen goods. Three suspects are in police custody after stealing about R1.5-million worth of cables from a municipal storage depot in Hercules. The robbery took place on July 28, when four armed men stormed the depot and held the four on-duty security officers at gunpoint. The security officers were tied up, their mobile phones confiscated, and they were taken to the back of the building, where two of the suspects guarded them. 'The remaining two suspects moved to the front of the building and were later joined by additional accomplices. Two trucks arrived on the scene and began loading electrical cables, with an estimated value of R1.5-million,' said SAPS spokesperson, Captain Johan van Dyk. Van Dyk said thanks to a vigilant community member, who saw the suspicious activity and immediately alerted the Hercules SAPS, two patrol vehicles, along with private security guards, responded swiftly and began searching for the trucks. One of the trucks, accompanied by a silver BMW, was located in Bremer Street. As SAPS officers intercepted the vehicles, the suspects tried to flee on foot. A chase ensued, resulting in the successful arrest of three suspects. After finding and searching the truck, police recovered a large quantity of electrical and copper cables, as well as three pairs of gloves. A search of the BMW yielded seven Mandrax tablets and false number plates. The arrested suspects have been charged with business robbery and possession of suspected stolen property. An investigation is continuing to identify and trace other suspects. Ward 1 councillor Leon Kruyshaar believes the suspects fled into a nearby informal settlement when intercepted by the police, and that the perpetrators are members of a larger syndicate responsible for cable theft in the area. 'As you know, cable theft is quite a continuous issue in our area. They have been stealing cables for the longest time, and not only have they been stealing from our ports, but they've also been stealing the cables underground,' said Kruyshaar. 'There are trenches they dig in the middle of the night and steal them [cables]. Overhead cables as well, the theft of municipal infrastructure is just out of hand in our area, and an arrest like this is exactly what we need. 'The criminals need to know that we are not just going to sit back; eventually, they'll be caught. It takes time, it takes a lot of investigations and so forth, but they are curbing this. 'Probably not at the rate that we want, because the price of copper is currently at R170 a kilogram, so the theft will continue, but we'll do everything we can to stop this.' Kruyshaar expressed his gratitude for the authorities' efforts, as he said that cable theft is an issue that won't stop in his ward.
