Rise of outsiders: Ex-AAP minister Rajendra Pal Gautam gets key Congress post
AAP
) government minister in Delhi
Rajendra Pal Gautam
, who joined the Congress about seven months ago, was on Wednesday appointed chairman of the
Scheduled Castes department
of the All India Congress Committee (AICC).
It is the latest in a series of elevation of "outsiders" to key party posts, a trend that has been widely attributed by Congress members to de facto leader
Rahul Gandhi
's penchant to replace many "insiders", though such appointments are technically done in the name of party president Mallikarjun Kharge.
Gautam, an activist, is also one of the persons widely believed to be thriving in Gandhi's latest switch to "social justice plank" with special focus on Jai Bhim and Mandal political paths. He had resigned from the AAP after a controversy over his presence at a conversion meeting where the Hindu deities were allegedly criticised.

Just a few months ago, Anil Jaihind, an activist who used to be with Janata Dal, was appointed chairman of the OBC department of the AICC, within weeks after he joined the Congress. He is an advocate of social justice, especially for the other backward classes (OBCs). Before that, former CPI-affiliated AISF student leader Kanhaiya Kumar was made AICC in-charge of the NSUI, the Congress students' wing, which the Left students' body had been opposing in many campuses. While each of these individuals were elevated with Gandhi's blessings, within the party circles they are still being treated as outsiders.
Gandhi, who recently referred to "BJP sympathisers" within the Congress, had in the past elevated many saffronites-turned-Congress members , including Hardik Patel, Sanjay Nirupam, Navjot Singh Sidhu, Nana Patole and Udit Raj to key organisational posts, only to see some of them returning to the BJP and others being resented by the "original insiders".

Punjab: AAP MP Kang urges MEA to act on stranded Indians in Spain
Chandigarh, A Lok Sabha MP from Punjab, Malvinder Singh Kang, has written to External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar, seeking his urgent intervention to resolve the problems being faced by several Indian nationals stranded in Spain due to delays in passport renewal and re-issuance at the Indian Consulate there. Punjab: AAP MP Kang urges MEA to act on stranded Indians in Spain In the letter, Kang said routine matters such as damaged, lost, or expired passports have escalated into a "humanitarian emergency", leaving countless citizens, including many from Punjab, stranded in Spain for more than six months. These individuals, the MP from Sri Anandpur Sahib claimed, are being deprived of their fundamental right to mobility and reunion with their families. "The viral spread of poignant videos showing desperate applicants at the Consulate's doors captures their anguish and highlights the scale of suffering. "Some of those affected face grave medical conditions requiring urgent treatment, while others are battling heart-wrenching family emergencies," Kang wrote. The A MP cautioned that the persistent bottlenecks in passport processing not only inflict unbearable hardships on citizens abroad, but also undermine India's reputation as a "compassionate" and "efficient" guardian of its global diaspora. He urged the MEA to direct the Consulate in Spain to overhaul its processes, prioritise pending cases, and ensure swift passport services. "I strongly request @DrSJaishankar Ji's urgent intervention as thousands of Indians, including many from Punjab, have been stranded in Spain for the last six months due to delays in passport renewal and re-issuance at our Consulate. "Many face critical medical needs or family tragedies. A viral video captures their anguish. Swift and decisive clearance of all pending cases is essential to end their suffering, uphold their dignity, and reunite them with their families," Kang said in a post on X. He also assured the ministry of full cooperation in bridging the connections with those impacted, and providing further details as and when needed. The A MP expressed confidence that swift action by the government would ease the burden of the affected individuals, reaffirm India's commitment to responsive governance, and safeguard the dignity and well-being of its citizens abroad. "Some Parties Didn't Ask For Corrections...": Poll Body On Voter Roll Row
The Election Commission (EC) clarified that political parties are involved at all stages of preparation of electoral rolls and did not raise objections in time, as the poll body faces criticism over the voter list revision in Bihar and vote theft allegations. A day before it is scheduled to address a presser on Sunday, the EC said that physical and digital copies of draft electoral rolls are shared with all political parties and put on the ECI website for anyone to see. A one month period is then given for the filing of claims and objections. The final published voter list is also shared with all recognised political parties and a two-tiered appeals process is made available. Amid the ongoing Special Intensive Revision of voter lists ahead of the Bihar Assembly polls, the EC's is facing questions from Opposition parties, which claim that the move will disenfranchise crores of eligible citizens due to want of papers. The Supreme Court also directed the poll to publish online the list of over 65 lakh voters proposed for deletion during the SIR exercise. Defending itself against the criticism, the EC said in Saturday's release, "It seems that some political parties and their Booth Level Agents (BLAs) did not examine the Electoral Rolls at the appropriate time and did not point out errors." The EC also said the the parties that have objections to the electoral rolls did not raised objections "at the right time through the right channels". The Election Commission has responded to the Opposition's statements on the Bihar voter list revision exercise, stating that all political parties in Bihar were provided with the complete list of proposed deletions beginning July 20, 2025. This includes the names, reasons for proposed deletions-ranging from death, permanent migration, untraceability, to duplicate entries-and clear guidelines on filing objections. Congress leader Rahul Gandhi also levelled voter theft charges against the EC, for which the poll body has sought an apology if he fails to give an undertaking backing his allegations. The commission has asked the Congress leader to submit the names of those he claims have been wrongfully added or removed from the voters' list, along with a signed declaration.
