Perak teams up with industries, varsities to tackle AI impact
IPOH: The Perak government has implemented several initiatives, including forging strategic partnerships with industries and universities in the field of artificial intelligence (AI) development, to tackle technological challenges in the workforce.
State Communications, Multimedia and Non-Governmental Organisations Committee chairman Mohd Azlan Helmi said efforts to strengthen reskilling and upskilling are being intensified through Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) institutions such as the Industrial Training Institute, GiatMARA and community colleges.
'The state government recognises that the transition towards AI brings significant challenges for the current workforce.
'Job displacement due to automation and robotics is not only a national concern but a global one. However, our focus is not on rejecting AI, but on managing this transition responsibly,' he said when winding up the debate on the royal address at the State Legislative Assembly sitting here today.
Mohd Azlan added that AI should serve to simplify life, not oppress, and must be embraced as a catalyst and opportunity rather than a threat.
'But to achieve this goal, action must be taken now through inclusive policies, comprehensive training and ethical oversight,' he added.
On the status of the National Digital Network (JENDELA) rollout in the Batu Kurau state constituency as of February, he said two new towers are fully operational in Kampung Cebuk Pelanduk and Simpang Empat, Anak Kura.
'A total of 21 transmitter stations have been upgraded to enhance telecommunication coverage quality.
'As for fixed broadband services, 2,026 out of 2,763 premises are now equipped with gigabit-capable optical fibre access, which is expected to be completed in stages by the end of 2025,' he said.

Mara TVET graduate earns up to RM20,000 monthly as aircraft mechanic
KUALA LUMPUR: A graduate of the Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) programme under Majlis Amanah Rakyat (Mara) is now earning up to RM20,000 a month after securing a job as an aircraft mechanic with an international airline. The success story of Ibrahim, a graduate from Institut Kemahiran MARA (IKM) Kuala Lumpur, was shared by Mara chairman Datuk Dr Asyraf Wajdi Dusuki, who met him during a flight from Doha to Kuala Lumpur. Asyraf Wajdi said Ibrahim approached him and introduced himself as a "child of Mara", havingcompleted a Certificate in Fabrication Technology at IKM. He is now working as an aircraft body mechanic at Qatar Airways in Doha, earning between RM17,000 and RM20,000 a month. "Ibrahim's story proves that TVET graduates can succeed and become skilled professionals on an international level. "This remarkable young man from Merlimau, Melaka, said all his batchmates from IKM Kuala Lumpur have found similar jobs with comparable salaries. He is incredibly proud to be a product of Mara. "Who says TVET graduates can't be successful? The skills and vocational programmes offered by Mara — be it through GiatMara, IKM, Mara advanced skills colleges, the Malaysia-Japan Industrial Institute, or even at higher education institutions like Universiti Kuala Lumpur (UniKL) and the German-Malaysian Institute (GMI) — have proven their ability to produce highly skilled talent not just for the country but for the global stage. "Ibrahim is a shining example of how a professional TVET certificate alone can lead to a high-paying, internationally recognised job. "Only knowledge can transform lives. Mara is going global," he said in a Facebook post today. Previously, Deputy Prime Minister and National TVET Council chairman Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi had said that the employability rate of TVET graduates is high, with Mara institutions recording a 98.7 per cent rate, surpassing the national average of 94.5 per cent. In February, Asyraf Wajdi also stated that Mara had undertaken a rationalisation of all its TVET programmes, focusing on high-tech and strategic fields that align with industry needs. This rationalisation covers 270 TVET-stream institutions under the Mara education institution network, out of a total of 344 across the country.

Malaysia backs Tokyo Statement 2025 at Asia-Pacific telecoms meet

(Facebook pic) PETALING JAYA : Communications minister Fahmi Fadzil has reaffirmed Malaysia's full support for the Tokyo Statement 2025, pledging the country's commitment to building resilient, inclusive, and sustainable digital infrastructure across the Asia-Pacific region. Fahmi, who is leading the Malaysian delegation for the Asia-Pacific Telecommunity (APT) Ministerial Meeting, said the gathering is a vital platform for formulating joint policies and strategies towards an inclusive, sustainable, and secure digital development in the Asia-Pacific region. 'At the same time, it acts as a stage for multilateral cooperation in the region, which is the fastest-growing in terms of technology, while also supporting developing countries in technical, capacity-building, and ICT regulatory aspects,' he said in a Facebook post today. He stressed that Malaysia remains committed to ensuring universal access, technological equity, and environmental sustainability in the digital space. During a ministerial session themed 'Sustainable Digital Infrastructure and Accessibility', Fahmi outlined the government's efforts to expand digital reach nationwide through initiatives like Jendela, which has connected over 9.03 million premises to high-speed internet and extended 5G coverage to over 82% of populated areas. He also pointed out that as of the end of 2024, Malaysia recorded an average mobile broadband speed of 105.36 Mbps and internet coverage of 98.66%. 'With a mobile penetration rate of 61% and 5G rollout, Malaysia is opening up more opportunities in education and across various industries,' he said. Fahmi added that Malaysia is ready to collaborate with other APT member states to share innovations and work towards a more inclusive and sustainable digital future. The APT is an intergovernmental organisation established in 1979 under the joint initiative of the United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific and the International Telecommunication Union. Themed Harnessing Emerging Technologies for Sustainable, Inclusive and Equitable Digital Transformation in the Asia-Pacific, this year's meeting is attended by 31 member countries and 19 associate members, comprising government entities, regulators and private sector agencies.

Ahmad Zahid hails London visit as bridge to reinforce Malaysia-UK ties
LONDON: Malaysian Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi described his four-day working visit to the United Kingdom which concluded Wednesday as a bridge to strengthen bilateral relations. Ahmad Zahid, who is also Minister of Rural and Regional Development, said the visit, filled with discussions and programmes, differed from previous visits as he had the opportunity to personally witness the commitment of students sponsored by Majlis Amanah Rakyat (MARA) at University College London (UCL) during a session with them. '...we (delegation) saw their commitment not only to acquiring knowledge but also to acting as catalysts for Generation Z and Generation Alpha. When they come here and gain knowledge, then return to Malaysia, they will contribute not only to their professions but to other fields as well, providing motivation especially to Generation Alpha and the millennial generation,' he told a press conference here upon the conclusion of his visit. Additionally, Ahmad Zahid shared that Malaysia's Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) received very positive feedback from the university and students who were excited about the government's game-changing initiatives. '...we are aware of the government's aim to create 60,000 high-tech engineering job opportunities, and we have requested for the Training of Trainers (ToT) programmes to be expedited,' he said. Beyond TVET, the visit also strengthened cooperation in rural development, renewable energy, and climate resilience through Ahmad Zahid's meeting with the UK's Secretary of State for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs, Steve Reed. The meeting also discussed collaboration in rural transformation, disaster management, water security, and investments in green energy, including the reactivation of the ASEAN Power Grid. During the visit, Malaysia also proposed the use of green sukuk for climate financing and efforts to lead the global halal ecosystem through the World Halal Council and a unified halal logo. Both countries also reaffirmed their commitment to enhancing trade relations under the Comprehensive and Progressive Agreement for Trans-Pacific Partnership (CPTPP) and through private sector cooperation. Through the Malaysia-UK franchise business dialogue held during the visit, Ahmad Zahid expressed hope that it would help Malaysian franchise brands penetrate the UK market by 2026. Ahmad Zahid also expressed confidence that the launch of Visit Malaysia 2026 (VMY2026) in the UK would expand collaboration with UK industry players, including airlines, to attract more UK tourists to Malaysia. Following the conclusion of his UK visit, Ahmad Zahid is leading the Malaysian delegation to the 8th Session of the Global Platform for Disaster Risk Reduction (GPDRR) in Geneva, Switzerland on June 4 and 5.
