Union trade M Daniel Gazdag to Crew for up to $4.5M
April 11 - The Columbus Crew acquired midfielder Daniel Gazdag from the Philadelphia Union on Friday in exchange for up to $4.5 million.
The Union receive $4 million guaranteed and up to an additional $500,000 if certain performance metrics are met by the 29-year-old Hungarian, who departs as Philadelphia's all-time leading scorer.
"We are thrilled to add a high-impact player of Daniel's pedigree to our team. He is an experienced player who has proven to be one of the top players in our league over the past few years," Crew general manager Issa Tall said. "His high soccer IQ, work ethic on and off the ball, and competitive spirit will be a great addition to our team.
"Daniel's profile is one we were looking for to complement our current group, and we are excited to see him get started in the Black & Gold."
Gazdag recorded 59 goals and 20 assists while playing more than 10,000 minutes in 125 matches (115 starts) since joining the Union in 2021. He has two goals and two assists in six matches this season.
Gazdag was an MLS Best XI selection in 2022, leading the Union to the MLS Cup Final that season with 22 goals in 34 matches.
"Daniel's contributions to the club have been invaluable," Union sporting director Ernst Tanner said. "Since joining the Union, he has been an integral part of the team's success, and we are deeply grateful for everything he has done for the organization.
"At this time, we believe this move is in the best interest of both the club and player. The financial flexibility it provides will allow us to further invest and strengthen our roster, while also providing opportunities for other players who we are confident can step in to the role. Additionally, this gives Daniel the opportunity to pursue what makes the most sense for him in the next chapter in his career. We know Daniel will continue to find great success, and we wish him nothing but the best."
Gazdag played for eight seasons with Budapest Honved FC in Hungary's top league before coming to MLS.
Gazdag will occupy a Designated Player roster spot for Columbus. He is under contract through 2025 with an option for 2026.
His offense will help the Crew overcome the February departures of forward Cucho Hernandez to La Liga's Real Betis and forward Christian Ramirez to the LA Galaxy.
The first opportunity for Gazdag to face the Union will be on May 10 when Columbus visits Chester, Pa.
The move opens up a Designated Player spot for Philadelphia, which previously sold midfielder Jack McGlynn to the Houston Dynamo for $3.4 million in February.

According to reports in Belgium, the Bundesliga side have given Wirtz the 'green light' to complete his move to Anfield. The clubs have agreed a fee of €150m (£126m) for Wirtz's services with personal terms already agreed. Former Leverkusen sporting director Rudi Voller had recently given an update on talks and suggesting he felt positive that a move would eventually be completed. 'It's no secret that he'd like to go to Liverpool,' Voller told DAZN (via Sport1). 'I know the clubs are negotiating with each other. [But with] transfers like this [it's] often the case that it takes a while until an agreement is finally reached. Of course, in the end, you have the feeling it will go through. 'Florian Wirtz has proven that he is a very, very valuable player. Not only for Bayer Leverkusen but also for the national team. That's why he costs a few euros more.' Meanwhile, Liverpool icon Steven Gerrard also shared his feelings on the Reds' potential deal for Wirtz and appeared to be a big fan. He said: 'There are rumours obviously, Florian Wirtz. 'A big talent who's done fantastic for Xabi Alonso at Leverkusen. He's got a huge future in front of him, so if Liverpool is the place for him, let's hope we can make it happen.' Should a deal be completed, Wirtz would be the second star to swap Bayer Leverkusen for Liverpool. Arne Slot 's side also completed a move for fullback Jeremie Frimpong, who was signed for around £35m. Liverpool's business does not appear likely to end there either. The Reds are also closing in on a deal for Armin Pecsi from Puskas Akademia for £1.5m. They are also hopeful of signing his Hungarian counterpart Milos Kerkes from Bournemouth. Fed's Harker says rate cuts this year still possible, amid data quality worries
June 6 (Reuters) - As he heads toward retirement at month's end, Philadelphia Federal Reserve President Patrick Harker says interest rate cuts remain a possibility this year amid a very uncertain economic landscape, as he also flagged worries about the quality of economic data policymakers use to make their decisions. When it comes to easing monetary policy, 'it's possible, I would never take it off the table,' Harker said in an interview with Reuters on Thursday. 'If the signals are such that inflation doesn't look like it's moving rapidly north, but unemployment does then, yeah, I could definitely see making one or more cuts this year, but it's hard to say at this point.' Harker was interviewed in the final weeks of his tenure, as he's set to retire at the end of June after taking the reins of the Philadelphia Fed in 2015. The Fed next meets on June 17-18 when it is universally expected to hold its interest rate target steady at between 4.25% and 4.5%. What happens later in the year is up in the air, as the Trump administration's chaotic trade policy featuring ever-changing high import taxes will likely drive up inflation and lower employment. The question facing Fed officials is whether the inflation rise is a one-off or the makings of something more enduring. Those uncertainties have blunted officials' ability to provide guidance on the monetary policy outlook and have pushed them into signaling a wait-and-see attitude. Harker, an engineer by training who led the University of Delaware before coming to the Fed, said in the interview that he was increasingly worried about the quality of the data policymakers in general rely on. Data, including that produced by the government, is 'not good. It's not getting better,' Harker said. 'It's not just inflation data but a whole host of data, so we're increasingly flying blind, or at least half blind.' Harker's worries about the state of data come in the wake of reports the government was cutting back on resources devoted to compiling the closely watched consumer price index, which provides a critical reading that informs things like the wage changes in union contracts and the setting of social security benefits.

Teenagers gearing up for West Highland Way challenge
The Stirlingshire duo's are completing the 96 mile trek to raise money for his rugby team's trip to Sweden, but also for a mental health charity which supports people across Forth Valley. Two Stirlingshire teenagers are in training to Walk the West Highland Way for charity. Daniel Glasgow (15) is fundraising for his Strathendrick rugby under 15s team, based in Fintry, to go to Sweden next year, and he is also fundraising for charity, Action in Mind. His friend Roscoe Dawes (16) is fundraising for his McLaren High World Challenge trip to Eswatini. The teenagers are walking the iconic route this August - and in the lead up are completing various hikes and mountain climbs, kicking off recently with Ben Ledi. Daniel lives in Kippen and attends Stirling High. Mum Ruth said: 'The rugby team are going to Sweden next year for a tour, and the whole team are involved in fundraising. This is one of Daniel's contributions. 'They'll also do things like bag packing at a supermarket and car washing. 'He is also giving half of the funds raised to Action in Mind Stirling. Mental health, as we know, is relevant to everyone and Daniel's life has been impacted at times by the challenges of family members and friends. 'This is true of Roscoe as well. 'Roscoe is raising money to go Eswatini as part of his McLaren High World Challenge trip. 'They will do community engagement work whilst there, as well as developing leadership skills. 'Roscoe and his Dad and brother moved from the Highlands to Thornhill in 2023, after a significant bereavement, so this Eswatini trip is a massive personal challenge and undertaking for Roscoe. 'They are both active people anyway, enjoying sports and the outdoors, but they have taken on more challenging and lengthy activities, by climbing mountains and going hiking to prepare themselves for the endurance required for the West Highland Way. 'Not only is there physical training required, but also mental.' The pair's preparations include climbing Ben Ledi, Ben Lomond and Tarmachan Ridge as well as walking local sections of the West Highland Way and John Muir Trail in the weeks and months leading up to their full West highland Way trek, setting off on July 30. 'They're also learning about Scotland's geography as they learn about the walks and climbs they'll do,' said Ruth, 'for example, the difference between a Munro and a Corbett.
