Union trade M Daniel Gazdag to Crew for up to $4.5M
The Union receive $4 million guaranteed and up to an additional $500,000 if certain performance metrics are met by the 29-year-old Hungarian, who departs as Philadelphia's all-time leading scorer.
"We are thrilled to add a high-impact player of Daniel's pedigree to our team. He is an experienced player who has proven to be one of the top players in our league over the past few years," Crew general manager Issa Tall said. "His high soccer IQ, work ethic on and off the ball, and competitive spirit will be a great addition to our team.
"Daniel's profile is one we were looking for to complement our current group, and we are excited to see him get started in the Black & Gold."
Gazdag recorded 59 goals and 20 assists while playing more than 10,000 minutes in 125 matches (115 starts) since joining the Union in 2021. He has two goals and two assists in six matches this season.
Gazdag was an MLS Best XI selection in 2022, leading the Union to the MLS Cup Final that season with 22 goals in 34 matches.
"Daniel's contributions to the club have been invaluable," Union sporting director Ernst Tanner said. "Since joining the Union, he has been an integral part of the team's success, and we are deeply grateful for everything he has done for the organization.
"At this time, we believe this move is in the best interest of both the club and player. The financial flexibility it provides will allow us to further invest and strengthen our roster, while also providing opportunities for other players who we are confident can step in to the role. Additionally, this gives Daniel the opportunity to pursue what makes the most sense for him in the next chapter in his career. We know Daniel will continue to find great success, and we wish him nothing but the best."
Gazdag played for eight seasons with Budapest Honved FC in Hungary's top league before coming to MLS.
Gazdag will occupy a Designated Player roster spot for Columbus. He is under contract through 2025 with an option for 2026.
His offense will help the Crew overcome the February departures of forward Cucho Hernandez to La Liga's Real Betis and forward Christian Ramirez to the LA Galaxy.
The first opportunity for Gazdag to face the Union will be on May 10 when Columbus visits Chester, Pa.
The move opens up a Designated Player spot for Philadelphia, which previously sold midfielder Jack McGlynn to the Houston Dynamo for $3.4 million in February.

Nuclear fuels producer Orano does not expect any impact from EU-US deal
PARIS, Aug 1 (Reuters) - The trade deal between the European Union and the United States should not impact the business of French nuclear fuels company Orano, as so far the U.S. has not imposed tariffs on uranium products, its CEO Nicolas Maes told reporters on Friday. Under the deal announced last Sunday, the EU agreed to purchase nuclear energy products along with U.S. liquefied natural gas and oil worth in total $750 billion over the next three years. "We have looked at the material, and for all the deals that have been signed so far between the U.S. and other regions of the world, and isotopes, uranium, enriched uranium are exempted," Maes said. However, he said the deal's provision for exports of nuclear fuel from the U.S. to Europe was surprising, given that the U.S. is an importer, rather than exporter of the fuel it needs for its nuclear power plants. "The U.S. market is structurally importing nuclear material and not exporting," Maes said. He also said Orano's plans to expand the company's nuclear enrichment facilities in Oak Ridge, Tennessee, should not be affected by either the trade deal or U.S. President Donald Trump's executive order deregulating the nuclear sector. Trump signed an executive order In May to reduce regulations and fast-track new licences for nuclear reactors and power plants and reinvigorate uranium production and enrichment in the country. Maes said that Orano will maintain its nuclear safety standards but the order may result in easier dialogue between the nuclear safety authority and the utilities during the permitting process. He repeated an earlier comment that a final investment decision on the project is expected in 2027.

But staff who will be selling Meghan Markle's wares at the new Netflix store won't be able to afford it on their hourly wage, the Daily Mail can reveal. Employees at Netflix House, which is due to open later this year at two US locations, will be earning as little as $20 (£14.77) an hour. That means of the Duchess of Sussex's As Ever range will be more than they earn for an hour's work. As Ever wine lovers must purchase a minimum of three bottles for $90 or six bottles for $159 and 12 bottles for $300 - plus $20 for shipping and taxes. Meghan's crepe mix costs $14 (£10.34) and her herbal teas would be expensive for 'Crew Members' at $12 (£8.86) Even her infamous flower sprinkles would be steep at $15 (£11.08) a pack. The As Ever range is set to be featured in the Philadelphia and Dallas branches of Netflix House, the streaming giant's first physical stores. They will give fans a chance to buy merchandise from their favourite shows, enjoy immersive experiences related to hit programmes and eat at restaurants. Despite the expiration of Netflix's $100 million (£73.8 million) deal with Meghan and her husband, Prince Harry, in September, the streamer's chief executive Ted Sarandos has said he believes As Ever products will sell. For that kind of payment, Meghan's gilded life in California will seem a long way away. Meghan's rose wine sells for $30 (£22.16) a bottle but must be bought in packs of three, costing $90 (£66.47) A Netflix House employee working an eight hour day would struggle to afford the price of half a case at $159 (£117.43) once they had paid taxes on their earnings.
