In the strategic roundtable: 'Achieving New Levels of Excellence in Payments – Quick, Easy and Predictable', Dave Birch, published author and Top 100 Global Fintech Influencer, moderated speakers Jean-François Mazure, global head of cash clearing services, Societe Generale and Simon McConnell, managing director and global head of European clearing, Citi Services as they discussed levelling up payments products in banking.
When discussing challenges that big banks in the industry are facing today, McConnell highlighted that addressing data consistency and balancing compliance and innovation is a struggle for European financial institutions, especially with heavy regulation like ISO 20022 and SEPA requiring full compliance.
"It's just a bit of software!" Birch joked, to which McConnell responded: "It is just many different bits of software and many different institutions. So it becomes a real challenge in and of itself."
McConnell mentioned that the industry is still struggling to find consensus on how to implement new data requirements, however good core data is essential. He added: "One of the biggest challenges for us is doing the hygiene factors before we get to the innovation space."
Mazure shared his belief around compliance and balancing it with innovation: "In a sense, a bank makes money out of the risks. To accept them, to take and manage. When you think about such a statement, the first reaction is to think about credit risk. But from a business philosophy standpoint, it's exactly the same for companies. That's why I personally encourage my teams to be natively active since the very early stages of any business relationship."
Mazure pointed out that when seeing promising developments in the market and possible investments as an intermediary bank, there is a lot happening and they are being asked the same questions on what to focus on when it comes to product payments, but their resources are not infinite.
Mazure compared financial institutions to cruise boats, explaining that it is difficult to steer the boat in the right direction, and quality of decisions depends on the captain, but there needs to be harmony throughout the boat staff to keep it afloat; it is important to secure senior support for continuous business investments, but there has to be comprehensive understanding of the business across teams and senior management.
When asked to define 'excellence' in the space, McConnell insisted that there is no single answer to this question, as it depends on where the payments provider is located, the access they have to the market, and the behaviors of their consumers. He pulls an example from his work, "with the clearing business, it's our ability to fund, to extend the credit, to make sure that the wheels are greased, and the most important thing is for the payments to get through when they need to get through; that is critically important."
Mazure added that cost, speed, and transparency is what the users are demanding, and McConnell responded on the note that transparency is essential in order to harmonise across borders to allow access to data and information: "What the cross-border payment working group is calling for is a called to action to for banks of Europe to make themselves open in that space, so we can create that consistency."
Mazure added to McConnell's point on excellence and transparency, stating "I would like to insist on the criticality of what we do. As intermediary banks, we are taking care of our end users payments, and our clients end users payments, which is a huge responsibility. Measure the noise created anytime we fail at correctly processing a payment, and you can easily see how important is it is. What is at stake is the capacity of our own institution to keep on accessing to certain currencies or markets. What is at stake, possibly, if one day we fail, is a mere default of payment. So we're speaking about a serious responsibility.
"Criticality means that beyond cost, beyond transparency, beyond all these important criteria, I strongly believe that the most important is our ability to keep on protecting the delivery of our services."
When the conversation moved on to digital assets and blockchain, McConnell noted that there has been a pickup in blockchain investment, however challenges remain in achieving ubiquity. Mazure mentioned that there is potential for blockchain-based solutions in internal banking processes, but doubted the immediate impact of these technologies.

Super-soft suede drawstring chinos? Welcome to the new business uniform
The Italians seem to be engaged in something of a sartorial arms race to produce lighter and lighter menswear. Anyone familiar with the history of men's tailoring will know that much of the impetus for this lies with Giorgio Armani, who began experimenting with the deconstruction of traditional tailoring in the 1980s. He himself credits his first boss with setting him on this path. 'It was Nino Cerruti who asked me to try to find a way of making men's tailoring more relaxed, less stiff, less restrictive. He was the one who encouraged me to seek a fresh, softly classic, more comfortable style,' he says. That was in the previous century, and since then the Italians have been using technical advances in materials to create ever more lightweight styles. Witness the Santoni Easy collection of shoes and boots, whose leather models weigh only 295g each because of a rubber composition in the sole that was developed by the brand. A classic boot or shoe with the feeling of a trainer. Now we have Canali entering the field. The CEO, Stefano Canali, is the grandson of the founder Giovanni Canali, who created the company with his brother in 1934. Stefano cut his professional teeth on Wall Street in the 1990s, when he and his colleagues wore the requisite suit, shirt and tie as a daily uniform. This tailoring was not only formal but constructed in a way that felt substantial; it was a kind of corporate armour. The fun started, Stefano says, when his Wall Street company introduced casual Fridays. 'It was a disaster, a complete disaster,' he says. 'Back then there was no credible and viable alternative to the suit.' He talks of mismatched colour combinations and ill-advised pairings of trousers and sport jackets. 'Today we are lucky, because now there are collections where you can look well put-together wearing casual clothes.' Canali's Nuvola collection is the most extreme iteration of the label's commitment to the trajectory of relaxing menswear. In its main line you will still find the type of suits that a Wall Street traditionalist could wear, but they have been reimagined to be less restrictive. 'The shoulder pad on one of our classic suits is now something like one fifth of the thickness it was in the 1990s,' Stefano says. Fabrics too have become lighter. 'I remember my father telling me that when he got married it was in July, some 60 years ago, and the suit he was wearing was made out of wool fabric that we now only use for winter collections because of its weight.' So one part of Canali's offering still serves the boardroom. But the Nuvola collection is for the man in search of a new freedom. 'It's all about the craftsmanship,' Stefano says. 'Back in the 1990s people thought that a lightweight jacket should not be an expensive item; they felt it was a cheaper option, of poor quality. What they didn't understand is that to make a deconstructed jacket where you remove the lining and shoulder pads and still maintain a degree of sartorial form, like a defined shoulder line, requires immense skill. It's complicated to manufacture.' An unlined jacket needs to create shape through the expertise of the cut. There is no room for error, because you can see all the work that is usually hidden from view by an internal lining. It is for this reason that Nuvola is Canali's ultimate expression of its tailors' skills; 'a lightweight, precious and complicated-to-make collection'. The firm has had to develop new methods of construction, like finding a way of stitching together fine suede taken from the manufacturing of gloves — 'it's the only way to join two pieces of suede that are this lightweight'. The suede is accompanied by cotton cashmere jersey, ultra-light nylon and lightweight wool. But Stefano is keen to point out that the softness and comfort of these pieces is less to do with the fabrics than the 'skill, craftsmanship and attention to detail of the atelier'. The result is a casual collection of jackets, outerwear, knits, shirts, T-shirts, trousers and shoes, including sneakers. Key pieces are an ultra-soft suede overshirt (£2,490), suede calf-skin sneakers (£450), a cashmere travel shirt (£2,450), a wool and silk polo shirt (£690) and a pair of ultra-soft suede drawstring chinos (£1,490). The pieces are designed to be effortless to wear and effortless to put together: remembering those casual Friday disasters, Stefano has made sure the style and colour of his Nuvola items mix together in a way that is almost impossible to get wrong. 'If I were to describe a typical Nuvola outfit, I'd pick a suede sneaker in one of the natural colours like sand, or light brown (£450), and pair these with woollen drawstring trousers in a complementary tone (£570),' Stefano says. 'I'd add a woollen unlined overshirt (£690) and put an understated cotton silk T-shirt (£590) underneath … If you feel like it, just grab a hat, a baseball cap (£290) for instance, made out of precious fabric as well. Four European countries 'outraged' over new airline luggage rules passed by EU
Last week, the Council of Europe made two major decisions on the future of commercial air travel. The first was on compensation rights, and the second related to free hand luggage Four European countries are outraged at new rules that could limit how much delayed passengers can claim in compensation and when airlines can charge passengers for carrying hand luggage. Last week, the Council of Europe made two major decisions on the future of commercial air travel. The first was on compensation rights. The Council decided that passengers on short-haul flights would have to be delayed by four hours or more before they could claim compensation, rather than the current three. For long-haul flights, delays will have to be six or more hours. The good news for passengers is that compensation for those delayed on short-haul flights will increase from €250 (£211) to €300. However, compensation for long-haul flights will be cut from €600 to €500. The changes were first tabled 13 years ago and must still be approved by the European Parliament before they become law. The European Consumer Organisation, the BEUC, has argued that the changes will be a huge blow for consumers and deprive 'the majority of passengers from their compensation rights". The BEUC claims that most delays are between two and four hours. While the UK now sets its own compensation rules following Brexit, the changes will impact Brits if they come into force, as it will apply to passengers taking flights with an EU carrier. This means it could affect a passenger travelling to and from an EU country on an EU airline. The second decision relates to baggage allowance. Under the new rules, the concept to free luggage will be limited to 'personal items' that can be placed under the front seat. That will leave other stowed cabin bags exposed to charges. Spain, Germany, Slovenia, and Portugal voted against the changes, warning that they could mean passengers end up paying extra for almost any cabin bag. The Spanish government criticised the new rules as 'too restrictive.' Spain's Minister for Social Rights, Consumer Affairs and the 2030 Agenda, Pablo Bustinduy, described the changes as an 'outrage'. The political agreement, adopted by a qualified majority in the EU Council, was voted against by Spain, Germany, Slovenia and Portugal. Minister Bustinduy argued that the new rules would violate consumer rights and "only strengthen the power and profits of airlines." If the rules are accepted, then Ryanair would have to change its free hand luggage policy. Right now, the budget Irish airline require customers to have a bag no larger than 40x20x25 centimetres, which must fit under the seat in front. Under the new rules, the dimensions will be changed to 40x30x15 centimetres. That means Ryanair would be obliged to allow a bag 10 centimetres wider, but could also reduce the depth currently allowed by 10 centimetres.

After 12 years of wrangling, EU countries have green-lighted plans to lengthen the wait time before flyers can lodge claims for delayed flights. Currently, passengers have to be delayed by more than three hours before qualifying for compensation. However, under the new stipulations - which still have to be negotiated with the European Parliament before they become law - short-haul travellers will only be eligible to claim compensation after being delayed by four hours or more, while those on longer journeys will have to sit tight for a six-hour hold-up before they can lodge a compensation claim. It's not all bad news though, as EU nations have also agreed to increase the amount of compensation for those delayed on short-haul journeys from €250 (approx £210.47) to €300 (£252.56). But, passengers hit with delays on long-haul flights could see their compensation reduce from €600 (£505) to €500 (£420). The trade body Airlines for Europe (A4E), which represents companies such as Ryanair, easyJet and Lufthansa, and The European Consumer Organisation, the BEUC, both slammed the rules - arguing it would deprive the majority of passengers from being able to claim compensation. This is because most delays are only between two and four hours. "Europe has been waiting for transparent and workable passenger rights for 12 years and member states have fallen at the final hurdle to deliver," A4E said. "Member states have diluted the European Commission's original proposal and introduced even more complexity." According to Yorkshire Live, German members of the European People's Party have also expressed their disapproval, stating that 'decreasing the rights to compensation for air passengers would be a step in the wrong direction'. "Reimbursement after a three-hour delay has been standard for many years and should remain so," they added. A senior EU diplomat is believed to have said that 'no politician wants to say more than four hours' at risk of dampening Europeans' holiday plans. The news comes amidst accusations by 16 consumer protection associations from 12 Member States against seven budget airlines for imposing unfair charges on passengers' hand luggage. "The European Court of Justice has made it very clear that hand baggage is an integral part of the basic ticket price. Normally, there is no surcharge on the price as long as the hand luggage is of a reasonable size," explained Steven Berger, a solicitor with the European Consumers' Organisation (BEUC). "All we're seeing is a proliferation of airlines charging for this baggage... We're calling for very clear rules. Passengers must be able to take one piece of luggage, a small suitcase or a rucksack." He added: "At the moment, there are two different opposing positions among the member states in the Council. On the whole, you have the camp of the member states that are going to defend the three hours to be able to benefit from the right to compensation and others that are going to ask for five hours and nine hours based on distance.
