Arrest of nuns: UDF targets BJP's Christian outreach bid

Time of India28-07-2025
Kochi: Turning the arrest of two Keralite nurses in Chhattisgarh into a political flashpoint to counter BJP's Christian outreach efforts, Congress and its UDF allies launched strong protests condemning the incident.
Opposition leader V D Satheeshan visited the house of Sister Preethy Mary, one of the arrested nuns, in Angamaly and strongly criticised Sangh Parivar. "The nuns were arrested and remanded by police without any substantial reason. Such incidents are occurring across the country. Clergy and nuns are being continuously attacked. Previously, numerous incidents were reported in states like Chhattisgarh, Maharashtra, Madhya Pradesh, Gujarat and Uttar Pradesh, governed by BJP.
While these attacks are happening nationwide, hypocrisy is evident in Kerala. People come with cakes for Easter and Christmas like wolves in sheep's clothing," said Satheeshan, hinting at BJP's outreach programme of visiting Christian houses.
Demanding the nuns' immediate release, Satheeshan alleged that Sangh Parivar was trying to exploit divisions among people for political gain by turning them into enemies.

"The nuns' arrest is not an isolated incident; it is repeatedly occurring. The issue was raised in Parliament. Christians are being attacked nationwide. Notices have been issued in Assam demanding the removal of pictures and statues from Christian schools," he said.
Meanwhile, MPs from Kerala staged a protest in Parliament on Monday, demanding the nuns' release. "Nuns were targeted by a violent mob despite no wrongdoing.
The BJP-RSS ecosystem treats all minorities as criminals. Lumpen elements are unleashed to intimidate fellow citizens practising their faith. This jugalbandi between Bajrang Dal goons and Chhattisgarh police shows BJP's real intent towards religious minorities.
We demand their immediate release and justice for the innocent nuns," said K C Venugopal, MP.
Wayanad MP Priyanka Gandhi said in a post on X that she strongly condemned the shocking incident at Durg railway station.
"The detention of two Christian nuns—Sister Vandhana and Sister Preethi—along with others, without legal basis and on false allegations of conversion and trafficking, is a grave attack on minority rights. This is not an isolated case — under BJP rule, minorities are being systematically harassed and vilified.
Mob justice and communal targeting have no place in our democracy. The rule of law must prevail," she said.
Leader of opposition in the Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi said the Catholic nuns being jailed in Chhattisgarh was not justice but BJP-RSS mob rule. IUML state president Sadiqali Shihab Thangal said the nuns' arrest is a violation of religious freedom.
Congress in Ernakulam has decided to organise block-level protest programmes across the district in the coming days.

Judges won't decide who's a true Indian: Priyanka Gandhi on court rebuking Rahul

A day after the Supreme Court rebuked Rahul Gandhi for claiming China had annexed a large stretch of Indian territory, saying a "true Indian" wouldn't make such a remark, Congress MP Priyanka Gandhi slammed the remarks, asserting it's not for judges to decide who qualifies as a true Indian."With all due respect to the judiciary, it is not for them to determine who is a true Indian and who is not. The judges will not decide that," Priyanka Gandhi said, speaking to reporters outside the leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha, it is Rahul Gandhi's duty to ask questions of the government, the Wayanad MP added. Her remarks come amid a heated political debate sparked by the top court's comments during a hearing of a defamation case against Gandhi. Hearing Rahul Gandhi's challenge against a defamation case over his remarks during the Bharat Jodo Yatra, where he claimed that over 2,000 kilometres of Indian territory were annexed by China and that Indian soldiers were thrashed by the Chinese army, the Supreme Court asked, "How did you know about 2,000 km being annexed by the Chinese?" and remarked, "If you're a true Indian, you wouldn't say it."Priyanka further said, "Rahul Gandhi has always respected the Army and our soldiers... It is the responsibility of the Leader of the Opposition to question the government, and that is what he does."The Supreme Court on Monday stayed the proceedings against Gandhi before a Lucknow court over his remarks about the Army during his December 2022 Bharat Jodo the Supreme Court's censure of the Congress leader, the BJP took a swipe at Rahul Gandhi, accusing him of pledging to "strengthen China", while the Congress hit back, saying every patriotic Indian has demanded answers since the Galwan clash, but the government continues to "obfuscate the truth" with its "DDLJ policy -- Deny, Distract, Lie, and Justify".Calling Gandhi "China guru", the ruling party claimed that the leader of the Opposition in Lok Sabha and his party also "hate" the Indian armed forces and that he is being "remotely controlled by foreign forces".Meanwhile, the Congress alleged that the PM Modi-led government is responsible for the biggest territorial setback India has faced since 1962, and accused it of pursuing "normalisation" with a hostile China because of its cowardice and misplaced economic priorities.- EndsTune InMust Watch IN THIS STORY#Rahul Gandhi#Supreme Court#Indian National Congress

Govt must debate SIR, House not running reflects ruling side's weakness: Priyanka Gandhi

It has not been functioning since so many days. Why is it so? I was thinking how difficult it is, they (the government) should speak with everyone and say that we will debate on it. How difficult it is to run the House?" Priyanka Gandhi told reporters in the Parliament House complex. "Have they become so weak that they are unable to ensure that the House runs. Everyday we have to do this because they don't want to discuss a particular issue. Why can't they debate it?" the Congress MP from Wayanad asked. She said there should be a debate on the SIR since the exercise is being done throughout the country and is an issue that affects the whole country. Live Events "There was a debate on Operation Sindoor. They should debate on this also. Let the country know. We can put forward our position, they can put forward theirs. What is their fear?" "It is their weakness that they are unable to run the House," Priyanka Gandhi said. Earlier, several MPs of the INDIA bloc parties, including Congress parliamentary party chairperson Sonia Gandhi , staged a protest in the Parliament House complex on Tuesday against the Election Commission's voter roll revision in Bihar, and demanded its rollback. This is the tenth day of their protest with only one day gap in between on Monday when the opposition skipped their protest in view of the death of former Jharkhand chief minister Shibu Soren. The opposition has been protesting in both Houses of Parliament against the SIR, alleging the EC's exercise was aimed at "disenfranchising voters" in Bihar ahead of the Assembly elections. They have been demanding a discussion on the issue in both Houses. Economic Times WhatsApp channel )
