SPL title race poised to heat up
Celtic were again the dominant force in Scotland last season, finishing 17 points clear of Old Firm rivals Rangers, but a more competitive title race should unfold in 2025-26.
Although Brendan Rodgers may yet bring in reinforcements, Celtic's squad has been weakened over the summer with winger Nicolas Kuhn, who scored 13 league goals last term, Greg Taylor and Jeffrey Schlupp all leaving. Talented forward Jota is set for a long spell on the sidelines with a knee injury.
Rangers, meanwhile, have been busy. Russell Martin was not every fan's first choice to be manager but he has been well backed by the club with talented EFL trio Djeidi Gassama, Theo Aasgaard and Emmanuel Fernandez all coming in, along with Bournemouth pair Max Aarons and Joe Rothwell.
It could take time to bed in new players and Martin's commitment to his system is not without its faults, but Rangers have a fairly soft start to the season and should arguably be shorter than 2/1 to win the title.
Dundee for drop after turbulent summer
At the other end of the table, Dundee are 11/4 favourites to finish bottom and it is hard to disagree with the odds-makers.
Newly promoted pair Livingston and Falkirk are also expected to be in the mix, but there are strong arguments for both to avoid finishing bottom.
Crucially, Livingston have persuaded top scorer Robbie Muirhead to sign a contract extension with the club, which will significantly help their attacking output, while Falkirk have done well to keep the bulk of their squad together after back-to-back promotions.
Falkirk will have their takers at 3/1 to finish bottom, but they at least have stability under manager John McGlynn.
The same cannot be said for Dundee, who have endured something of a summer exodus with the likes of Scott Tiffoney, loanee Seb Palmer-Houlden and Jordan McGhee departing along with key young midfielder Lyall Cameron.
That quartet bagged 24 league goals between them last season, so new boss Steven Pressley could be up against it.
Yamada can make striking impact
Hearts ace Lawrence Shankland will stand out to many in the Scottish Premiership top goalscorer market at 9/2, but the value in backing him is arguably gone.
The composition of the Celtic and Rangers attacks are not set in stone, so going for an outsider could be the way to go and Shin Yamada makes each-way appeal at 16/1.
Striker Yamada is a new addition for Celtic, joining from Kawasaki Frontale, where he scored 28 goals in 58 league appearances in the 2024 and 2025 seasons.
It could take time for Yamada to adapt, but he joins compatriots Reo Hatate, Daizen Maeda and Hayato Inamura at Celtic, so should feel comfortable and he has already looked sharp in pre-season.

Ex-Celtic man joins Italian side under former Parkhead cult hero
The 29-year-old midfielder's move marks his sixth Italian club, having signed a two-year contract with the Genoa side. This comes after his departure from Empoli, following their relegation in his second spell with the team. Sampdoria have the option to extend his contract until 2028 if they wish. Read more: Henderson will now be playing under ex-Celtic midfielder Massimo Donati, who became the club's manager last month. The former Celtic player and manager, Donati, had stints at Sambenedettese, Legnago Salus, and Athens Kallithea. He played 50 times for Celtic, scoring five goals, and had a memorable last-minute goal against Shakhtar Donetsk in 2007. Donati returned to Scotland to play for Hamilton Accies and St Mirren before retiring to become a coach at Kilmarnock. Henderson, a Celtic academy graduate, made 37 appearances for the club, scoring three goals. He left Celtic in 2018 to join Bari before playing for Hellas Verona, Empoli, Lecce, and Palermo. His younger brother, Ewan, also played for Celtic, making 12 appearances in all competitions. He recently joined EFL League One side Wycombe Wanderers.

‘I openly admit I wanted to sign for Celtic' reveals £12m striker as he points out ‘Rangers won the league that year'

The Wrexham promotion winner's performances over five years at Easter Road gained the attention of Gordon Strachan who wanted to bring the hit man to Glasgow in 2009. 3 Steven Fletcher has opened up on the affair 3 Sun Euro 2024 Preview night Hosted by Sean Panel – .Harry Redknapp, jack Wilshere, Gordon Strachan and Jurgen Klinsmann. Credit: Darren Fletcher But after a breakdown in negotiations he eventually moved south of the border to team up with Owen Coyle at Burnley. He told the Warm-Up: "I'll openly admit when I was at Hibs I wanted to sign for Celtic. 100%. "It was in the January, Strachan tried to sign me in the January and they wouldn't let me go. "And then I wanted to go in the summer. "Rangers won the league that year." Fletcher, who went on to grace the likes of Wolves, Sheffield Wednesday and Dundee Utd, previously told Open Goal: "When I was at Hibs and Strachan tried to sign me in the January, that was when I really, really wanted to go. "Toys were out the pram and everything. I thought my football career was over when I never got to go. "I think they were just negotiating over a couple of hundred grand at the time, that was the difference. "And nothing materialised. "And then Coyley came in in the summer, you can't turn down Owen Coyle." I'm a Celtic-daft bride – I called off the big day but I still celebrated in my wedding dress at Parkhead The punchline was left to Hoops hero Chris Sutton, who was also part of the conversation, and was bringing his time at Celtic to a rather unhappy end at the time. He deadpanned: "You did well to avoid that." 3 Keep up to date with ALL the latest news and transfers at the Scottish Sun football page

Forrest keen to delay 'scary' prospect of retirement
Celtic winger James Forrest admits retirement is a "scary" prospect, but the winger will give his all for the club until they "shove him out the door".Forrest made his Celtic debut in May 2010 and has scored in 16 consecutive seasons as well as eclipsing Lisbon Lion Bobby Lennox as the the club's most decorated player with a haul of 13 titles, seven Scottish Cups and six League current deal runs until the end of the season, but the 34-year-old Scotland international isn't concerned about the situation."I just want to keep enjoying it," said Forrest while admitting nervousness at the idea of calling it a day on his playing added: "I have thought about it a wee bit. I left school at 15, 16 and that's all you have ever done and all you've ever known."So I want to keep playing for as long as I can, but yeah, it's scary."I've played with players who have retired, and different people go down different paths once they finish, but I don't really know what I'll definitely do after"But I think it's scary because it's what I've done for 20-plus years, and it's been unbelievable, it's been really really good."I have given everything to Celtic and I will continue to do that until my contract is up and they might shove me out the door anyway, so we will see what happens."Celtic were denied a domestic treble in last season's Scottish Cup final by Aberdeen, but Forrest insists revenge won't be the key motivator when the sides meet at Pittodrie this said: "I don't think it's revenge. Every time we play Aberdeen every season and go up to Pittodrie, it's always hard games and I think that kind of rivalry is there anyway."It's early in the season, so we want to continue our form and just keep the momentum going."It's all about us, focusing on us and trying to get the three points."
