Rodgers keen to add more firepower to Celtic attack
Manager Brendan Rodgers is still keen to add more attacking firepower to his Celtic squad after the signing of Japan striker Shin Yamada. Speaking following his side's impressive four-goal pre-season win over Newcastle, the Parkhead boss said: "I think it's bringing goals to the squad. Especially when you score four goals, it seems like you're okay. "But we lost an important player in Kyogo [Furuhashi] in January. He brought us a lot of goals. We lost Nicolas Kuhn. He brought us a lot of goals. Matt O'Riley even last summer. "So even though we scored a lot of goals last season, we still want more. And our ambition is to have more. So I think all across the front areas, we have to be active in order to give us that depth we need." Yamada has arrived from Kawasaki Frontale, where he scored 32 goals in 121 appearances, on a four-year contract. The 25-year-old recently won his first international cap and joins compatriots Reo Hatate, Daizen Maeda and Inamura at Celtic Park. On his arrival, Rodgers said: "His profile suits how we play. He's one of the quickest players from the Japanese league. He's deemed quicker than Daizen [Maeda] and Kyogo in terms of statistics. "And that's how we play. We have speed on the top line. He'll give us that depth as well." Celtic have Champions League play-offs to navigate in the second half of August, but Rodgers is prepared to be patient for further signings. "Any coach would love to have them in on the first day of pre-season," he said. "But as long as they're here by the end of August, and obviously in some areas we would like them sooner, we'll be able to see the squad we have and take it from there." Celtic swept Newcastle aside thanks to an Arne Engels penalty, Johnny Kenny's easy finish after a mistake from goalkeeper Nick Pope, a goal from Yang Hyun-jun on the counter-attack, and Liam Scales' header. Rodgers, whose side beat Sporting Lisbon 2-0 in midweek, added: "It was an excellent exercise. We had a really tough 10 days over in Portugal and played a really good game on Wednesday night. "So, just a continuation. The guys are looking strong, getting better. And, obviously, our tactical idea against a top team, you're looking to play with that authority and creativity. And it was really good."

Football: Celtic sign forward Yamada from Kawasaki on 4-year deal
LONDON (Kyodo) -- Japanese forward Shin Yamada has transferred from Kawasaki Frontale in the J-League first division to Scottish champions Celtic on a four-year deal, the clubs announced Saturday. The 25-year-old came through the Kawasaki youth ranks and debuted professionally for the club in 2023 after playing university football. He was the equal most-prolific scorer among domestic players in the J1 last season, with 19 goals. He joins Celtic's Japanese contingent of Daizen Maeda, Reo Hatate and new arrival Hayato Inamura, who also moved to the Scottish champions this summer from fellow J1 outfit Albirex Niigata. "It is a huge honor for me to be here as a Celtic player and I can't wait to begin my time at this amazing club," Yamada said in a statement on the Celtic website. "Celtic is one of the top names in world football. I have already watched my countrymen like Daizen, Reo and Kyogo (Furuhashi) do so well at Celtic and I will aim to have the same impact." Yamada made his Japan debut this month at the East Asian Football Federation E-1 Championship in South Korea.

'More to come in' at Celtic after Yamada
Celtic have "some more" players to recruit, says manager Brendan Rodgers as the new season nears. New striker Shin Yamada was introduced to fans before the Scottish champions beat Newcastle United 4-0 in Saturday's friendly. The Japan international, 25, is one of three attacking players signed by Rodgers so far this summer, with winger Benjamin Nygren and striker Callum Osmand also coming in. Hayato Inamura and Kieran Tierney have also bolstered Celtic's defence. "We've got a lot more to come, we've got some more to bring in also," Rodgers told club media. "We need to and we want to get some more from the squad, some more players to come in and support the guys that are already here." Inamura started against Newcastle, while Nygren and Tierney came on as a second-half substitutes. Rodgers described Celtic's performance as "very impressive", with Arne Engels scoring a penalty and Johnny Kenny netting before half-time. Yang Hyun-jun scored the hosts' third and Tierney set up fellow sub Liam Scales for the fourth. Celtic face Ajax in Italy on Thursday and will then take on either tournament hosts Como or Al-Ahli on 26 or 27 July, before starting their Premiership defence at home to Kilmarnock on 3 August. Celtic new boy Shin Yamada FASTER than Daizen Maeda as Brendan Rodgers reveals what fans can expect from signing
Click to share on X/Twitter (Opens in new window) Click to share on Facebook (Opens in new window) BRENDAN RODGERS says he wants more goals and new faces after bringing in frontman Shin Yamada. Rodgers watched his side thrash Newcastle United 4-0 after Yamada was paraded at Parkhead after agreeing a four-year deal from J League Kawasaki Frontale. He said: 'It's about bringing goals to the squad. 'When you've just scored four goals, that area seems to be OK. But we lost an important player in January in Kyogo, we've lost Nicolas Kuhn, and even Matt O'Riley last summer. That's a lot of goals. 'Even though we scored a lot of goals last season, we still want more, and our ambition is to have more. 'I think all across the front areas, we have to be active in order to give us that depth. 'By the end of the window I would expect us to have brought in players in certain areas of the pitch that we need for a very long season. 'Any coach would love to have them in at the beginning, on the first day of pre-season, but we all know how the market works. 'As long as they're here by the end of August - and obviously in some areas we'd like them sooner - we'll be able to see the squad that we have and take it from there. 'Shin's profile suits how we play. He's one of the quickest players from the Japanese league - even quicker than Daizen and Kyogo in terms of statistics. 'That's how we play, that speed in the top line. So I'm really looking forward to seeing him come in and seeing what he can bring. Incoming Celtic signing Shin Yamada wipes away tears as he bids emotional farewell to Kawasaki Frontale in Japan 'All the Japanese players we work with have intensity, have fitness, and have this momentum, this mentality to keep going. 'So we think he'll bring that, and hopefully we can develop him like we have the other players.' Arne Engels, Johnny Kenny, Hyunjun Yang and Liam Scales were the scorers as Celtic routed Eddie Howe's side. Rodgers added : 'It was an excellent exercise. In our attacking line-up we had that authority and creativity which was really good. It was another big step forward for us. 'We're obviously two weeks or whatever it is ahead because we start the league that wee bit earlier, but we were still playing against really top players.' 5 Rodgers gave Kieran Tierney a return from the bench on his own and he added: 'I wanted him to get a specific welcome back, because to get him back here, is amazing for us. 'He could easily be playing at the top end of the Premier League. 'It was a great moment, and another connection with him and the support. 'He was up against young Elanga who's a brilliant signing for Newcastle, but he's got great pace and power, and you see how he created the goal with that explosive speed and quality.' Howe added: 'We've had an intense training week and we looked a little bit jaded. 5 'It was great for our preparation. Celtic were way ahead of us fitness-wise and sharpness-wise. 'It was a great atmosphere and stadium to play in, and a good standard of football for so early in pre-season. 'Whoever Celtic draw in the Champions League will be in for some tough games.'
