Five family members granted bail in teen kidnapping case

SEREMBAN: The High Court here today allowed the bail application of five family members charged with kidnapping a 16-year-old girl in April.
Their lawyer, T. Harpal Singh, informed Sessions Court judge Datin Surita Budin of the High Court's decision, which was made after a review of the initial bail rejection.
On May 14, the Sessions Court had denied bail to the five accused: D. Sasveena, 31; T. Boharaj, 32; Farhin Muhamad Ariffin, 23; and siblings P.K. Koshenn Kumar, 21, and P.K. Siveeshinaa, 23.
Harpal said the High Court allowed bail of RM15,000 for each of the accused, with two sureties from among family members.
The court also imposed five additional conditions: the accused must surrender their passports to the court and must not contact the victim or any prosecution witnesses.
Deputy public prosecutor Norazihah Asmuni told the court that all documents had been handed over to the defence, except for the closed-circuit television forensic report, the accused's mobile phone analysis, and the victim's medical report.
According to the charge, the five allegedly acted in concert to abduct the teenage girl with the intent of demanding a RM2 million ransom.
The offence was allegedly committed at 5.45pm on April 10 in front of a hair salon on Jalan S2 B10, Uptown Avenue Seremban 2.
They were charged under Section 3(1) of the Kidnapping Act 1961, read together with Section 34 of the Penal Code, which carries a mandatory jail term of not fewer than 30 years and whipping upon conviction.
The court set Aug 5 for the next case mention to facilitate document submission.
On April 14, it was reported that police shot dead a man in Bandar Bukit Tinggi, Klang, believed to be involved in the kidnapping case.

Nilai frozen food trader loses RM680,000 to online investment scam

SEREMBAN: A frozen food trader lost some RM680,000 after he was lured by scammers to invest in a non-existent online investment scheme. Nilai police chief Supt Abdul Malik Hasim said the victim, who is in his early 50s, lodged a report at the district police station Thursday (July 3) upon learning that he had been scammed. "The victim claimed that he had been contacted by an individual on social media on April 21 asking if he was keen to invest in an investment scheme which offered high returns. "The victim, who was taken in by the promise of high returns, then transferred the money via 43 transactions into 19 accounts," he said in a statement. Supt Abdul Malik said the victim only realised that he had been scammed when he was unable to withdraw his so-called profits. He said the case is being probed under Section 420 of the Penal Code for cheating.

MMEA seizes RM900,000 worth of cannabis in Kuala Perlis

KANGAR: The Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency (MMEA) in the Kuala Perlis Maritime Zone foiled an attempt to smuggle 170 kilogrammes of compressed cannabis worth nearly RM900,000 in Kuala Perlis waters early today. Kedah and Perlis MMEA director First Admiral Romli Mustafa said the cannabis seizure from a wooden engine-powered boat at around 3.30 am was the result of intelligence gathered by the Kuala Perlis Maritime Zone intelligence unit and continuous patrolling under Op AMAN over the past few days. 'A maritime patrol boat spotted an unregistered wooden vessel about 0.3 nautical miles west of Pulau Ketam using night vision binoculars. 'When the wooden vessel spotted the patrol boat, it changed course toward a mangrove swamp in an attempt to evade capture but was intercepted. One suspect jumped into the sea and swam toward the mangroves to escape,' he told a press conference. Romli said a further check of the boat revealed eight multicoloured gunny sacks containing 157 blocks of compressed dry leaves suspected to be cannabis, wrapped in clear plastic and packaging bearing foreign writing, concealed beneath fishing nets to avoid detection. He said the syndicate's modus operandi involved posing as local fishermen and infiltrating national waters under the cover of darkness to evade authorities. Some local fishermen are also suspected of being involved in these smuggling activities. 'The syndicate was found to be using unregistered wooden boats, likely from a neighbouring country, transferring the drugs to locally operated long-tail engine boats to bring them to shore,' he said. Romli said the amount of cannabis seized could have supplied over 30,000 addicts. The case is being investigated under Section 39B of the Dangerous Drugs Act of 1952.

Police tracking suspects in Raub telecommunication tower vandalism

RAUB: Police are tracking down suspects involved in the theft of card slot components from a telecommunications tower in Dong, near here, which caused service disruptions in the surrounding areas. Raub district police chief, Superintendent Mohd Shahril Abd Rahman, said the department received three reports from telecommunications service providers yesterday. "Due to the network disruption, the service providers deployed their staff to inspect the tower and discovered the card slot components were missing. "The damage to the tower caused service interruptions, as the network could no longer process internet data," he said in a statement today. He said the case is being investigated as theft under the Penal Code. "We urge anyone with information about the incident to report any suspicious activity to the Raub district police headquarters at 09-3552222," he added. Yesterday, it was reported that the act of vandalism led to mobile phone and internet outages affecting thousands of users. The compromised tower served as a hub linking eight other transmission towers located in Kampung Gesing, Sungai Ruan, Kampung Jelu, Bukit Pampong, Kampung Chendra Chinchin, Kampung Tanjung Putus, Kampung Temau and Kampung Gali Hilir. Meanwhile, Pahang State Communications and Multimedia, Youth, Sports and Non-governmental Organisations Committee chairman Fadzli Mohamad Kamal said all affected towers were fully restored by 5.30pm today. "The Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC), along with the service provider, conducted investigations and replaced the damaged components. "Several critical telecommunications transmission components were vandalised, causing eight towers to be non-functional. These components have since been replaced, with necessary upgrading works carried out," he wrote in a Facebook post, thanking MCMC and the service provider for their swift action in restoring the network.
