Kerala govt. to crack down on teachers, staff involved in Pocso cases: Minister
General Education Minister V. Sivankutty on Monday warned of stringent action against teachers and other employees of the education department involved in Protection of Children from Sexual Offences Act (Pocso) cases.
Seventy-seven Pocso cases have been reported so far against those working in secondary schools under the General Education department, he said.
Of them, 65 are teachers and 12 are non-teaching staff, the Minister said after inaugurating a programme organised by the Police Officers Association here.
He sought strong support from the police to ensure punishment for the culprits in such cases.
Of the 65 employees facing Pocso cases in secondary schools, stringent disciplinary measures have been taken against 45 persons, and steps are being taken in the remaining cases, he said.
Three Pocso cases have been reported in the vocational higher secondary division, Mr. Sivankutty said.
The government has suspended and taken legal action against 14 teachers from higher secondary schools and seven teachers from the aided sector in connection with Pocso cases, the Minister said.
The files of cases that have not been completed on time, along with information about the officials handling them, are being made available to the office of the Director of Public Education for further action, he said.

Butibori man sentenced to 12 years RI for sexual abuse of minor girl
Nagpur: Sachin Kukde (39), a resident of Teacher Colony, Hinganghat, was sentenced to a total of 12 years rigorous imprisonment and fined heavily for the sexual abuse of a minor girl. The judgment was pronounced by district and sessions judge HC Shende on Saturday. The incident occurred when the minor girl was alone at her home. The investigation was led by sub-divisional police officer Puja Gaikwad, who filed a chargesheet against the accused. The court found the accused guilty and handed down the following sentences: 12 years rigorous imprisonment and a fine of Rs10,000 under section 376 (A, B) and 511 IPC (with six months simple imprisonment in default of fine payment); seven years rigorous imprisonment and a fine of Rs5,000 under section 452 IPC (with three months simple imprisonment in default); and an additional 12 years rigorous imprisonment and a fine of Rs10,000 under section 376 (3) and 511 IPC, read with sections 4 and 6 of the POCSO Act (with six months simple imprisonment in default). Public prosecutor Deepika Gawli represented the govt in the case, while Anil Vyavare from Butibori police station acted as a legal assistant. School teacher cooks up rape story against colleague, arrested in Thiruvananthapuram
THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: A woman teacher of an aided school in Thiruvananthapuram has been booked for fabricating a sexual abuse story involving a girl student to settle personal scores with another teacher. C R Chandralekha, a Hindi teacher at Raja Ravi Varma Higher Secondary School in Kilimanoor, was booked under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (Pocso) Act for falsely claiming that the girl, a Plus I student, was raped and impregnated by a male teacher of the school. As per the Kilimanoor police, Chandralekha had been at loggerheads with the male teacher over issues related to the school management. While the student was on leave owing to health issues, Chandralekha made up the rape story and circulated it via social media. The girl came to know about the allegation when she rejoined classes. However, by then, the fake story had spread like wildfire, forcing the student to drop out. 'The employees have been divided over the ownership of the school for years. Chandralekha and the male teacher belong to rival factions and she concocted the rape story to tarnish his reputation,' said an officer. Chandralekha also reportedly informed other institutions concerned about the alleged rape. However, a probe revealed that there was no truth to the allegation. Following this, the Parent Teacher Association of the school filed a complaint with the general education minister, based on which Chandralekha was suspended. The girl's mother has also filed a complaint with the chief minister.

Barnala: 75-year-old man arrested for sexually assaulting minor
A 75-year-old man was arrested on Thursday for allegedly sexually assaulting a nine-year-old girl in Barnala. The accused has been identified as Ajaib Singh. Dhanaula station house officer Lakhvir Singh said the girl was playing football with other children when the accused lured her to a secluded part of the playground and sexually assaulted her. He reportedly fled after noticing some walkers approaching them. After the incident, the girl immediately ran home and informed her family following which they lodged a police complaint. A case under Sections 74 (assault or the use of criminal force against women with the intent to outrage their modesty) and 76 (assault or using criminal force on a woman with the intent to disrobe her) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita has been registered against the accused. Additionally, he faces charges under Section 12 of the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences Act as the victim is a minor. Authorities confirmed that the minor girl is recuperating well and undergoing medical examination.
