KUCHING (May 28): Sarawak is gearing up to become a competitive aerospace hub in the Asean region with plans to establish an Aerospace Industrial Park.
Deputy Premier Datuk Amar Awang Tengah Ali Hasan said the development of this industrial park will support high-value aerospace manufacturing, aircraft maintenance, repair and overhaul, and sustainable aviation fuel research.
'We are partnering with Airbus to expand the aerospace industry, create high-value job opportunities and attract foreign investment,' he said in is ministerial winding-up speech at the State Legislative Assembly (DUN) Sitting today.
Awang Tengah, who is International Trade, Industry and Investment Minister, said the global aerospace industry is projected to broaden in 2025, accelerated by technological advancements, sustainability initiatives and increasing air demand.
'As industry continues to evolve, Sarawak is actively developing our aerospace capabilities, focusing on aviation, space technology and satellite launch potential.'
He said the newly established Sarawak Aerospace Advisory Council will spearhead aerospace industry development by enhancing education, workforce training and forging global partnerships to drive future investment and accelerate industry growth.
'With a strong emphasis on talent development, Sarawak has launched the Aerospace Academy at the Centre of Technology Excellence Sarawak (Centexs) Lundu and i-CATS University College's Faculty of Aerospace Engineering, equipping future professionals with hands-on expertise and globally recognised qualifications,' he added.
On another matter, Awang Tengah said Sarawak is emerging as a regional leader in Southeast Asia's hydrogen economy, leveraging strategic investment opportunities through the Sarawak Green hydrogen hub in Bintulu and the upcoming hub in Kuching.
'These integrated facilities operate on a 'plug-and-play' model, enabling multiple investors to co-locate hydrogen projects without requiring standalone infrastructure.
'This approach optimises efficiency, reduces costs and accelerates hydrogen deployment, attracting global investors to Sarawak's hydrogen ecosystem.'
He said SEDC Energy and clean energy solutions provider Gentari continue to advance the Sarawak Green Hydrogen Hub, with plans for a joint venture company to develop centralised investor facilities.
'The hub is currently in its Scope Development and Engineering phase. Meanwhile, flagship projects H2ornbill and H2biscus are progressing toward Front-End-Engineering-Design completion by year-end.
'Malaysia and Japan have also reaffirmed their commitment to hydrogen collaboration, solidifying Sarawak's leadership,' he said.
He said the Distribution of Gas Ordinance was amended in November 2024 to ensure safe, responsible and structured development of hydrogen activities.
'This milestone legislation, which came into force in March 2025, reinforces investor confidence and ensures the sustainable growth of Sarawak's hydrogen economy,' said Awang Tengah. aerospace hub Aerospace Industrial Park Awang Tengah Ali Hasan lead

Job Scams A Key Issue Under Malaysia's ASEAN Chairmanship
PUTRAJAYA, May 30 (Bernama) -- Malaysia, as ASEAN Chair in 2025, has pledged to take decisive action against transnational job scam syndicates, placing the issue at the forefront of its regional agenda. Malaysia's Foreign Ministry, Wisma Putra, in a statement on Friday said it takes the issue of job scam syndicates seriously. The ministry expressed its sincere appreciation to the Malaysia International Humanitarian Organisation (MHO) as well as other non-governmental organisations (NGOs) and members of the media, for their continued efforts in drawing attention to the plight of Malaysians who have fallen victim to job scam syndicates across the region. 'Malaysia remains fully committed to working closely with ASEAN counterparts and all relevant stakeholders, including civil society, to strengthen preventive measures, enhance regional collaboration, and ensure protection for all victims,' added the statement. The Foreign Ministry said it has taken concrete steps to raise the matter with fellow ASEAN Member States, including at the ASEAN Foreign Ministers' Retreat in Langkawi in January and the 29th ASEAN Political-Security Community (APSC) Council Meeting held in conjunction with the 46th ASEAN Summit earlier this week. At the ASEAN Foreign Ministers' Retreat held in Langkawi in January, ministers reaffirmed their joint commitment to addressing transnational crimes, including people smuggling, trafficking in persons, drug trafficking, cybercrime, money laundering, and the rising threat of online scams. During the 29th ASEAN Political-Security Community (APSC) Council Meeting, held in conjunction with the 46th ASEAN Summit, Malaysia stressed the urgent need for decisive regional action in tackling cross-border crimes. As a result, ASEAN ministers agreed to review the ASEAN Plan of Action to Combat Transnational Crime (2016-2025) to strengthen regional coordination and ensure that its successor documents address emerging and evolving criminal threats. In the 46th ASEAN Summit, ASEAN leaders also expressed strong determination to intensify cooperation under the ASEAN Ministerial Meeting on Transnational Crime (AMMTC), with an emphasis on law enforcement collaboration to combat online scams and trafficking in persons.

From Gaza To South China Sea: Malaysians Laud PM Anwar's Bold ASEAN Diplomacy
By Shaidathul Suhana Ros and Norazurra Aziz KUALA LUMPUR, May 30 (Bernama) -- Malaysia's Chairmanship of ASEAN this year has been hailed as a diplomatic success, marked by strong joint statements reflecting unity among member states, especially in addressing pressing global humanitarian and regional security issues. Even the general Malaysian public praised Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim's bold leadership, particularly on the humanitarian crisis in Gaza. His firm stance, they noted, garnered support from ASEAN leaders, the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC), and China, culminating in a unified statement condemning violence against civilians. Pensioner Minati Hamir, 70, said she fully supports the government's unwavering commitment to advocating for the rights of Palestinians who have long suffered under prolonged conflict. 'As ASEAN Chair, Malaysia has a powerful platform to push for more effective regional diplomacy and global awareness campaigns. 'Support for Gaza must extend beyond Muslim nations. This is a humanitarian crisis that demands action and solidarity from all nations that uphold justice, regardless of religion or ethnicity,' she told Bernama when contacted. Minati, who is also a former school principal, also called on the government to broaden awareness campaigns, particularly among the younger generation, so the atrocities and suffering in Gaza are never forgotten. Sharing her sentiments, Anni Holilah Syahuddin, 23, a public university student, expressed hope that the recent summit resolutions would lead to peace in Gaza. 'The bloodshed feels endless. I hope their decades-long suffering will finally end with liberation from Israeli occupation,' she said.
