4 Steelers out with injuries vs Jaguars in preseason

Yahoo3 days ago
The Pittsburgh Steelers are taking the opposite approach to this week's preseason game than their opponent. The Jacksonville Jaguars have said they are playing everyone while the Steelers seem content resting more than a dozen players in addition to having several players, including two starters, out with injuries.
Head coach Mike Tomlin addressed the media on Thursday and said that the following players will not play vs the Jaguars due to injuries.
Edge defender - Alex Highsmith
Wide receiver - Calvin Austin III
Cornerback - Deonte Kent
Cornerback - Cory Trice Jr.
This means the Steelers won't dress five cornerbacks in total, with Joey Porter Jr., Darius Slay and Jalen Ramsey all out as well. The absence of Highsmith, along with T.J. Watt sitting out should give plenty of opportunities for Nick Herbig and rookie Jack Sawyer. Since the Jaguars are playing their starters, it will be a great test for all these Steelers backups.

Anthony Hernandez: 'No f*cking idea' why UFC flying me to Chicago, but 'it's a good sign'

Anthony Hernandez admits he's not quite sure what the UFC's intentions are by flying him out to Chicago this week. Hernandez (15-2 MMA, 9-2 UFC) scored a dominant submission finish of Roman Dolidze (15-4 MMA, 9-4 UFC) in this past Saturday's UFC on ESPN 72 headliner at the UFC Apex in Las Vegas. Hernandez later revealed that the organization will be flying him out to Chicago to attend Saturday's UFC 319 middleweight title fight between champion Dricus Du Plessis (23-2 MMA, 9-0 UFC) and Khamzat Chimaev (14-0 MMA, 8-0 UFC) at United Center. With Nassourdine Imavov taking on Caio Borralho on Sept. 6 in Paris, and Reinier de Ridder outlasting Robert Whittaker last month at UFC on ABC 9, many fighters are in the running for the next title shot. So why is the UFC flying out Hernandez? "I have no f*cking idea, but I'm going to go find out," Hernandez told MMA Junkie Radio on Monday. "Hopefully it's good, though. I feel like it's a good sign. Especially with showing out that close to the fight, I think it's good." Although he's on an eight-fight winning streak, "Fluffy" is aware he'll likely have to fight one more time before getting his desired title shot. "For sure, I get that the division is crazy," Hernandez said. "I was actually talking to Caio, and I'm like I'd hate to be the matchmaker right now because sh*t's going crazy right now. The middleweight division's been on fire, which is great for all of us." embed: This article originally appeared on MMA Junkie: UFC 319: Anthony Hernandez encouraged by being flown out to Chicago

Why Alabama football OC Ryan Grubb believes Ty Simpson is right for starting QB job

Alabama football has its starting quarterback in Ty Simpson, and on Tuesday, offensive coordinator Ryan Grubb explained why Simpson was the choice to lead the Crimson Tide in 2025. "Ty did a really nice job of taking care of the football, No. 1," Grubb said. "I think Ty is an incredible playmaker on the move, and guys like that, you worry 'are they going to be able to train themselves to take care of the football?' In the room in general, Ty led that charge. But Ty didn't throw any picks last week. He's thrown one all camp. We've thrown like four total this camp." On Monday, news of the coaching staff's selection of Simpson was broken by The Tuscaloosa News. He beat out redshirt sophomore Austin Mack and true freshman Keelon Russell for the job. Grubb said no decision has been made on who will be the No. 2 quarterback. Last year, turnovers played a major role in Alabama's first season with four or more losses since 2007. With ball security as a mandate, Simpson, a fourth-year junior, led the quarterback competition throughout spring practice and into fall camp before being named the starter. He spent three years as an Alabama backup, first behind Bryce Young, then behind Jalen Milroe. Grubb added that poise and decision making were the two areas where Simpson has improved most. "His eyes would drop and he'd give up on stuff really quickly, because he's so athletic and can move," Grubb said. "Now I feel like he's very poised back there. Any time you have a guy who can balance those two things - be an explosive athlete out of the pocket, but also know he doesn't have to do that every time, I think that's the thing you love to see out of a guy like Ty." The Crimson Tide opens the season at Florida State on Aug. 30. Tuscaloosa News columnist Chase Goodbread is also the weekly co-host of Crimson Cover TV on WVUA-23. Tigers' Kerry Carpenter joins Aaron Judge, Shohei Ohtani in impressive statistic

Tigers' Kerry Carpenter joins Aaron Judge, Shohei Ohtani in impressive statistic originally appeared on The Sporting News The Detroit Tigers are one of the top teams in the American League, thanks in part to contributions from various players on their deep roster. But one hitter stands out for his consistent production against one kind of pitcher. As the Detroit Tigers PR account on Twitter/X revealed, Tigers slugger Kerry Carpenter, since the start of 2024, ranks third in slugging percentage against right-handed pitchers with a .598 slugging percentage. The only two hitters ahead of him are Aaron Judge and Shohei Ohtani, two of the best hitters in baseball, who have won MVP awards in 2024 and could be on their way to another MVP in 2025. Carpenter, this season, has 305 at-bats with 263 coming against right-handed pitchers. In those at-bats, Carpenter has a .274 batting average with a .563 slugging percentage and a .865 OPS. Of his 21 home runs this season, 19 have come against righties. If he could play every day against a right-handed pitcher, Carpenter would be among the MVP favorites based on his production over the past two seasons. While this season has been impressive, in 2024, he was even more impressive. Across 236 at-bats against right-handed pitchers, Carpenter had a .305 batting average with a .631 slugging percentage and a .994 OPS. He hit 17 home runs, 16 doubles, and five triples on 72 of his hits against right-handed pitchers in 2024. MORE: Tigers top prospects could be impacted by $130 million Roman Anthony Red Sox contract The 27-year-old has been nothing short of incredible against right-handed pitchers, ranking third in baseball among hitters with at least 500 at-bats against right-handed pitching since the start of the 2024 season. He's a big part of the Tigers' offense this season, and while the team has struggled a little as of late, they're still in first in the AL Central, and Carpenter will be a big piece toward them holding onto that lead. So far in 2025, Carpenter has played 91 games, 27 shy of his previous career high in 2023. While he missed time earlier in the year and doesn't always play against left-handed pitching, Carpenter has been a big contributor for the Tigers in 2025. He's already hit the most home runs he's had in a single season, and would need 20 more RBIs, 10 more runs scored, 36 more hits, three more doubles, and two more triples to set career-highs in all of those categories. Against right-handed pitching, Carpenter has proven to be one of the most dangerous hitters in baseball. Only Ohtani and Judge, the 2024 MVPs, have been better sluggers against right-handed pitching since the start of 2024.
