2025 Simola Hillclimb ends with Zeelie, Mitchell and Weston on top
The programme was shortened and the rest of the day dedicated to his memory. His brothers, Charl and 2024 winner Dawie Joubert, withdrew from the event but asked that competition continue in his honour.
Despite the circumstances, the event proceeded with two new King of the Hill champions and the return of a former winner, who reclaimed the top spot with a record-breaking drive.
In the Modified Saloon Car category, 2021 winner Pieter Zeelie returned with a strong showing in his Toyota MR2 Super GT. In the Top 10 Shootout, he posted a time of 37.090 sec, cutting more than a second off Franco Scribante's 2022 record of 38.129.
Earlier, Zeelie had already made an impression by becoming the first saloon competitor to break the 40-second barrier during qualifying, setting a 37.553 sec run. A technical issue ended his Class Finals run, but his final climb was clean and quick, securing the 2025 title with a 1.280 sec margin over Reghard Roets.
Roets, driving the BB Motorsport Nissan R35 GT-R, claimed second place with a best time of 38.370. One of the more notable entries this year came from Volkswagen, which brought in seven-time World Rallycross champion Johan Kristoffersson. He set a new electric vehicle record of 39.001 in the Polo RX1e during his final run.
Franco Scribante, driving a Nissan R35 GT-R, worked with his team to adapt the car's suspension set-up to better handle the uphill straight. However, he couldn't match his previous pace and settled for fourth overall with a time of 39.631.
Silvio Scribante finished fifth in his Audi RS3 with a time of 40.409, while Wade van Zummeren, in the Nissan R34 GT-R, took sixth with a 41.037 sec run. George Evans followed in seventh in 42.179 in his Nissan R35 GT-R. Jonathan Mogotsi, representing Volkswagen Motorsport in the Polo SupaCup, posted a time of 43.579 for eighth. Anton Cronje rounded out the top 10 with a time of 54.098 in his Subaru Impreza WRX STi.
Cronje was also presented with the Spirit of Dave Charlton Award, recognising his professionalism and continued commitment to motorsport.
Single Seaters and Sports Cars
Byron Mitchell came out on top in the Single Seater and Sports Car category, securing the win during the Top 10 Shootout with a best time of 41.770 in his Reynard Formula VW. While he was a strong contender throughout the weekend, the absence of two top names removed some of the usual pressure.
Andre Bezuidenhout, a six-time King of the Hill winner, was missing from the entry list again this year — his Gould GR55B still undergoing an engine rebuild in the UK. Meanwhile, reigning champion Robert Wolk looked competitive early on, especially after putting in a 36.140 sec run during Saturday's second qualifying session. The car — Investchem's newly acquired 2005 Gould GR55B — had just one shakedown before the event. Despite the team's efforts to dial in the set-up, an electronic sensor failure forced Wolk to retire on Sunday morning before the final runs.
Mitchell kept things clean all weekend and backed up his overall win by also claiming victory in Class C2, posting a slightly faster time of 41.696 in that category.
Rick Morris took second place with a 47.444 sec run in his Formula Ford. He finished just ahead of 16-year-old Klayden Cole Ensor-Smith, who put the MSA4 through its paces with a time of 47.702. The car is part of South Africa's new single-seater championship, launched in March at Kyalami.
Allen Meyer followed in fourth (48.343) in a Formula VW. Behind him, Simphiwe Mohlahlo recorded 53.568 in the second MSA4 entry, while Stefan Wintershoven rounded out the field in his Chevrolet, posting 54.793.
Road Cars and Supercars
Clint Weston took the top spot in the Standard Production Vehicle category, driving the hybrid-powered Mercedes-AMG GT 63 SE E Performance. As part of the AMG Driving Academy, Weston maintained a strong position throughout the weekend, marking the South African debut of the car. He set his fastest time of the weekend in the final Top 10 Shootout, crossing the timing beam in 43.174 to secure the win.
Cristiano Verolini, behind the wheel of the BMW M4 Competition for the BMW Driving Experience, kept the pressure on Weston across all sessions. Despite the performance gap between the two cars, Verolini finished in second place with a time of 43.872.
Courtney Nicholl, also from the AMG Driving Academy, clocked 44.599 in the Mercedes-AMG C63 SE E Performance, taking third. BMW's Leyton Fourie followed closely in fourth, posting a time of 45.932 in the new M2.
Gordon Nicholson, a regular at the Simola Hillclimb, placed fifth with his Audi R8 V10, finishing in 46.103. Garth Mackintosh, driving the McLaren 720s, rounded out the top six with a time of 47.018, while AMG's Natalie Weston finished seventh in the Mercedes-AMG GLC 63 SE E Performance, clocking 47.436.
In eighth place, Yash Rampersad recorded a time of 47.789 in the Porsche 718 Cayman. Paul Munro followed in ninth with a time of 48.738 in the Toyota Supra, and Cars.co.za motoring journalist Ashley Oldfield completed the top 10 in the all-electric MG Cyberster roadster, finishing with a time of 49.231.

New Shelby Super Snake-R is a hissing-mad 630kW pony car
Fans of fast Fords will be pleased to hear Shelby has unleashed the new Super Snake-R. Based on the Ford Mustang Dark Horse, this limited-run wide-body sports car is aimed at track users and comes equipped with a 5.0 l Coyote V8 motor boosted with a 3.0 l Whipple supercharger. Kept in check by a bespoke engine management system, the US tuning firm says this set-up is good for more than 633kW. Two transmissions are on offer — a Tremec TR-3160 six-speed manual or Ford's 10-speed automatic — which send power direct to the rear axle via a mechanical limited-slip differential for optimal cornering traction. This increased muscle is bolstered by a modified chassis featuring fully adjustable coil-over suspension, metal spherical bearings and a rear harness strut bar said to improve the pony car's handling precision. Wide-body fenders shroud a set of forged magnesium wheels said to save almost 17kg of rotational mass compared with the OEM examples the Dark Horse ships with from the factory. Produced by MP Wheels, Shelby says this weight-shedding unlocks 'quicker acceleration, sharper turn-in and shorter braking distances'. In keeping with its racy performance, the Super Snake-R hits the asphalt with an aggressive carbon fibre body kit that's sure to turn heads wherever it goes. According to Shelby, the vehicle's front fenders, bonnet vents, front splitter, rocker wickers, rear wing and lower diffuser are made of the lightweight material. While the front fascia and bumper are designed for optimal airflow, dark tinted windows and Super Snake-R stripes and badges complete the car's track-inspired aesthetic. Subtle it is not. This is the third Shelby model built on the seventh-generation (S650) Mustang platform and the most aggressive Super Snake offered. Starting at $224,995 (R3,982,602), including the base Dark Horse Mustang, the Super Snake-R is available through authorised Shelby distributors in the US and select international locations.

Why the VW Golf TSI proves legends never die: a timeless hatchback review
After 50 years the Volkswagen Golf still manages to impress. Just like the VW Beetle had a place in every family story generations ago, so too does the Golf since its local introduction in 1978 with the Mk1 (first generation), then assembled at the Volkswagen production plant in Kariega. After testing a string of SUVs, when the 8.5-generation Volkswagen Golf 1.4 TSI arrived, I could not have been happier to get behind the wheel of the car that is such an integral part of the company's DNA and has been putting smiles on people's faces for the past 50 years. Top of the pile Our test unit was the Golf 1.4 TSI R-Line Plus, which stands on top of the four-car lineup, the others being the entry-level Life, followed by the Life Plus and then the R-Line. While hatchbacks continue to take a backseat to SUVs, Golf sales are ticking over in relatively healthy numbers, justifying VW's decision to bring them to our shores. I understand people's preference for an SUV, but having spent a week with the Golf, I couldn't help thinking that this is just so much more enjoyable as an overall experience, especially in the handling department. Anyway, consumers have spoken, but it's good to see that VW still sees the Golf very much as part of their offering. Exterior There's no confusion about its design. Unlike many SUVs, if you had to remove the badging, it would be difficult to tell one from another. At first glance, you would be forgiven for thinking it's a GTI with its R-Line Plus front end fitted with IQ Matrix LED Headlights with a snazzy illuminated VW front logo and 18-inch 'Leeds' alloy rims. Interior Sliding in behind the steering wheel, the first impression is one of quality. Soft-touch surfaces, stitching, door card fitment, and everything else pass close scrutiny with flying colours. The multi-function steering wheel is heated and with enthusiastic driving you may accidentally push the button with your thumb, there are brushed stainless steel shifting paddles, heated and cooling front Vienna leather seats with power adjustable driver seat, three zone automatic climate control, keyless entry, Park Assist with Park Distance Control, brushed stainless steel pedals and a 30-colour ambient lighting system. The 12.9-inch touchscreen infotainment system works like a charm. It's easy to reach, intuitive, with quick reaction and crisp graphics. Behind the wheel is VW's 10-inch digital cockpit that can be set to your preferences with equally good graphics and display. There's also a hallelujah moment on entry with the previous generation's haptic buttons on the steering wheel having been replaced with physical buttons at the behest of former VW South Africa MD and now CEO of Volkswagen passenger cars, Thomas Schäfer. The interior is one of the most ergonomically perfect cars that I have experienced in a while.

Blacked-out Audi A3 sedan stands out from the usual suspects
With SUVs all starting to look the same, this pedigreed product is a sure-fire head-turner. Not that long ago the fancier derivatives in a car's model line-up featured body colour and chrome touches everywhere. The cheaper the model got, the more black trim it got. These days, the opposite applies as the trimmings get darker the higher you move up in a range. Case in point being the facelifted Audi A3. While the entry level models come standard in Ingolstadt's familiar S line trim that was previously an option, the Black Edition is now the one you need to fork out extra to get more street credit. The Citizen Motoring recently sampled the sedan version of the Audi A3 1.4 TFSI Black Edition. Priced at R849 500, it comes at a R26 300 premium over the S line sedan and R15 000 over the Sportback Black Edition. Audi A3 gets dark touches The exterior darkened elements are small, but they do make a huge difference to the overall picture. At the front, it starts with the Audi logo, grille motif garnish and foglight bezel housing all being blacked out. Around the sides, the 18-inch alloy wheels changes from aluminium to Black Metallic, the rubbering around the window frames goes from matte to gloss black and the side skirts swop brushed chrome for black. The Black Edition rides on gloss black 18-inch alloys. Picture: Jaco van der Merwe At the rear, the dark grey motif on the diffuser and tailpipe housing is blacked out. Like at the front, the Audi logo also turns black. ALSO READ: Refreshed Audi A3 priced along with red-hot RS3 All the windows get dark privacy glass, while the black side mirrors caps are quite strangely offered as an optional extra at R2 100. That is the premium you pay nowadays when you don't want people to see you in a car with body colour trim. Although the Mythos Black Metallic our tester was clad in is a stunning colour, we felt that it doesn't quite do the Black Edition trim the kind of justice the bright yellow, red or white on offer will. S line interior The Black Edition hardly brings any changes to the cabin, which already features all the S line trim which includes sport seats and sports steering wheel. The seats were clad in a combination of Pulse cloth and artificial leather in red and black with red contrast stitching. The latter being a R8 100 option. The biggest change inside the update Audi A3 sees the inclusion of a new centre console, which swop out the gear lever with a toggle switch. Standard features include a 10.1-inch MMI Plus infotainment system, 12.3-inch Virtual Cockpit instrument cluster, panoramic sunroof, dual-zone climate control and Sonos sound system. The Audi 3 Sedan Black Edition features a 1.4-litre turbocharged petrol TSI engine, a familiar stalwart in the Volkswagen family. It sends 110kW of power and 250Nm of torque to the front wheel via eight-speed Tiptronic transmission. Notice the gear selector toggle switch. Picture: Jaco van der Merwe Pleasure to drive While we learned nothing new from this mill that we haven't already knew, it was just another timely reminder of what a pedigreed powertrain feels like. Proper throttle calibration, power delivery and gear changes make any trip in the A3 smooth sailing. ALSO READ: More striking and aggressive new Audi Q3 officially revealed Handling is as good as you'd expect from a brand with serious racing studs in its stable. And a sedan's lower centre of gravity compared to an SUV just makes the weigh distribution so much better. Fuel consumption can come it anything from the mid six litres per 100km to the low nines if you misbehave. Our roads have become so saturated with similarly styled SUVs these days that a compact premium sedan with dashing good looks like the Audi A3 Black Edition manages to stand out from the crowd. Add to this Ingolstadt's pedigree and a rock-solid powertrain and we have an odd-on winner.
