Replacing undersea pipeline to Langkawi could cost billions, Kedah state assembly told
State public works, natural resources, water supply, water resources and environment comittee chairman Mohamad Yusuf @ Munir Zakaria, said that due to the prohibitive cost, only repair work is being carried out on the damaged sections.
"For now, we're allocating RM50mil with RM10mil for consultancy services and the remaining RM40mil for repair works," he said.
He was responding to a supplementary question from Teh Swee Leong (PH-Kota Darul Aman), who had asked about the estimated cost of replacing the entire undersea pipeline to Langkawi.
Mohamad Yusuf added that since Syarikat Air Darul Aman (Sada) took over the Taliworks Langkawi concession on Nov 1, 2020, 42 new leaks have been repaired using underwater clamp methods, with the total cost for both new and existing leak inspections and repairs amounting to RM3.1mil.
He also said that pipe inspection and repair works are currently carried out every two weeks, depending on weather and sea conditions.
Mohamad Yusuf said Sada will also undertake a dedicated undersea pipeline repair project to enhance the stability of treated water supply to Langkawi.
Now in its final procurement stage, it is scheduled to begin in August and expected to be completed by February next year.
He also revealed that the highest recorded non-revenue water loss stood at 55%, equivalent to 33 million litres per day, out of a total output of 60 million litres per day from the Sungai Baru Water Treatment Plant.
"Following repairs, the water loss rate has been reduced to 27%, or 16 million litres per day, " he said.

PTT Synergy to put RM2.3bil in smart warehouses
PTT Synergy Group group managing director Teo Swee Phin. PETALING JAYA: PTT Synergy Group Bhd has allocated RM2.3bil in capital expenditure (capex) over the next two years for its automated warehouse business, which will cover the development of four new automated warehouses. PTT Synergy, whose business activities include construction as well as warehouse solutions and distribution centres, is strengthening its offerings by providing high-tech total intralogistics and industrial solutions. Group managing director Teo Swee Phin said the company had 15 automated warehouse projects in the pipeline in Malaysia and aims to increase the contribution from the new robotics segment going forward. 'We have a building storage capacity of 600,000 pallets, which translates into six million sq ft of warehouse facilities. 'Our goal is to increase this to two million pallets within the next three to five years,' he told reporters after the grand opening of the company's first smart logistics facility, PTT Logistics Hub 1 in Sungai Buloh. PTT Logistics Hub 1, built on a 2.63-ha site with a gross development value of RM180mil, features 168,000 sq ft of warehouse space and an additional 90,000 sq ft dedicated to operations. It can accommodate about 31,000 pallet positions. Currently the facility has an occupancy rate of around 70% and is expected to reach full occupancy within the next two months. He explained that PTT Synergy had three core segments, namely, construction, real estate and the upcoming robotics segment. The robotics segment, which comprises the automated warehouses, is expected to take about three years to develop, with the goal of matching the income currently generated by the construction business. 'At present, our real estate segment is catching up rapidly and has already surpassed the construction segment in terms of profitability. 'While our construction division typically generates about RM24mil annually, the real estate segment is projected to generate RM50mil per year and targeted to reach RM100mil in the near future,' he said. —Bernama

New study underway to ensure fair pay for Gen Z, millennials
KUALA LUMPUR: The Human Resources Ministry is conducting a feasibility study on implementing a minimum wage for graduates, aimed at ensuring fair starting salaries that reflect their qualifications and skills. Its minister, Steven Sim, said the study, carried out through the National Wages Consultative Council, is a comprehensive effort crucial to addressing salary expectations among younger workers, particularly those from Generation Z and Y (millennials), who now make up the majority of the country's labour force. "The study is important to ensure that graduates, the majority of whom are from the Generation Z and millennial cohorts, receive starting salaries that are commensurate with their qualifications. "This includes ensuring their income is aligned with their academic qualifications and skills and is also relevant to the current challenge of rising living costs. "The findings and related policy proposals will be submitted to the government once finalised," he said in a written parliamentary reply published today. He was responding to Young Syefura Othman (PH-Bentong), who enquired about the government's intervention plan to improve the wage structure in employment sectors dominated by Generation Z and millennials, who are currently facing a high cost of living. Citing the 2023 Salaries and Wages Survey Report by the Statistics Department, Sim said 76 per cent of the 10.1 million wage earners are aged between 15 and 44. He said graduates aged 15 to 29, representing Generation Z, currently earn an estimated median monthly salary of between RM1,529 and RM2,076. Meanwhile, those aged 30 to 44, representing millennials, earn between RM2,702 and RM3,381. "The young workforce, which makes up the majority of the country's labour market, holds significant potential to be empowered through government policy interventions that support the improvement of their well-being and competitiveness in the future economy. "In this regard, the government has taken several strategic measures to address the issue of wage structure and ensure a fairer distribution of income, including the implementation of the Minimum Wage Order, the Productivity-Linked Wage System and the Progressive Wage Policy."

Khazanah supports over 100 Malaysian MTCs through dual-track growth strategy
Khazanah Nasional Bhd managing director Datuk Amirul Feisal Wan Zahir. KUALA LUMPUR: Khazanah Nasional, through Dana Impak, is supporting over 100 Malaysian mid-tier companies (MTCs) through a dual-track approach involving capacity development and growth capital via private credit and equity. The aim is to strengthen capabilities, expand capital access, and drive innovation-led growth as MTCs navigate a fast-changing economic landscape. 'Through Dana Impak, we act as both catalyst and connector – identifying gaps in the ecosystem, deploying patient capital where markets underserve, investing in talent and helping to crowd in private investors, requiring a whole-of-nation approach to foster innovation and fuel long-term growth,' Khazanah managing director Datuk Amirul Feisal Wan Zahir said in a statement. 'Our focus on levelling up Malaysian MTCs represent our Advancing Malaysia strategy to enhance Malaysia's economic competitiveness and resilience. We are pleased to welcome our partners on this journey to unlock the full potential of Malaysian MTCs,' he added. Meanwhile, Securities Commission (SC) executive chairman Datuk Mohammad Faiz Azmi said MTCs in Malaysia act as a crucial growth engine by enhancing industrial output, creating jobs, fostering innovation and contributing a significant 36% to national gross domestic product (GDP). 'Through our 5 Year MSME & MTC Roadmap (2024–2028) the SC plays a central role in supporting MTCs in Malaysia by enhancing their access to funding, market-readiness, and strategic growth opportunities via the capital markets. 'We commend Khazanah's efforts and support of the SC's long-term goal to ensure a more inclusive and holistic capital market fundraising ecosystem,' Mohammad Faiz said. Khazanah's private credit strategy under Dana Impak aims to accelerate the growth of Malaysian MTCs through non-dilutive financing. To support this, Khazanah is partnering with Navis Capital Partners and Granite Asia to offer tailored credit solutions for MTC growth and expansion. Under its private equity strategy, Khazanah aims to help Malaysian MTCs scale, expand regionally, and strengthen operations by partnering with experienced fund managers. To drive this effort, Khazanah is partnering with Creador, a Malaysian PE firm with a strong regional presence and track record in supporting growth-stage companies. Khazanah invites Malaysian MTCs to apply for the next MGIP cohort starting in Q3 2025. Eligible companies shall be Malaysian-owned, privately held, with annual revenue between RM20mil/RM50mil and RM500mil (services/manufacturing), a profitable track record, and a strong innovation mindset.
