2,000 Guineas Betting Tips: Runners, Riders and Best Bets for Newmarket Classic

Independent02-05-2025

Newmarket stage the first Classics of the season this weekend with Saturday's Betfred 2,000 Guineas preceding a cracking renewal of the Betfred 1,000 Guineas on Sunday.
We've taken a look at each of the 11 runners in turn, examining their odds on betting sites, to work out who may have a chance of claiming Guineas glory on Saturday (3.35pm)
2,000 Guineas Betting Preview: Runners & Riders Review
BENEVENTO – ★☆☆☆☆
Made a satisfactory return to action in the bet365 Craven Stakes, folding late on after trying to make all the running. Stamina at this trip yet to be confirmed, especially at this level.
EXPANDED – ★★★★☆
Compacted a two-race juvenile career into a week last October, landing a Curragh maiden in game style prior to running a blinder in the Dewhurst Stakes (7f) at this venue just seven days later. Plenty more to come given his unexposed nature and a threat to all.
FIELD OF GOLD – ★★★★★
Looked to have matured and strengthened ahead of his comeback and that was evident on his highly impressive victory in the bet365 Craven. Having travelled powerfully throughout that day, he quickened in style to score readily once the gallops appeared. The one to beat in the eyes of horse racing betting sites and can give his training operation a first win in this prestigious event.
GREEN IMPACT – ★★★☆☆
Built on an encouraging Curragh debut as a juvenile with two defeats of Derby contender Delacroix over a mile, the latter in Group 2 company. Will stay further than this trip so slight concern one or two of his rivals may have a little too much speed at today's distance. Could develop into a live Derby hope himself with a big run.
RULING COURT – ★★★☆☆
Bolted up on his Meydan comeback at the beginning of March and the level of his work since has encouraged rider William Buick to pick him ahead of Dewhurst scorer Shadow Of Light. Very much respected if stall 11 doesn't inconvenience his chance.
SCORTHY CHAMP – ★★★★☆
Drawn in the middle of the track and looks a threat judged on the impressive nature of his National Stakes success at the Curragh last September. Today's test should suit ideally, and he has been the subject of positive vibes from his shrewd handler in the lead up to this event.
SEAGULLS ELEVEN – ★☆☆☆☆
Talented juvenile in his own right and posted the best effort of a busy two-year-old career in the National Stakes when third to Scorthy Champ at the Curragh. Went on to finish fourth in the Dewhurst behind Shadow Of Light and suspicion he needs to improve markedly to figure at the business end.
SHADOW OF LIGHT – ★★★☆☆
Middle Park Stakes winner who was thought to be a Commonwealth Cup type until defying connections with a game and tenacious win in the Dewhurst Stakes over seven furlongs last October. Joined a select band of horses to complete the Grade 1 double that day, but Godolphin's No1 rider prefers Ruling Court while a first time tongue tie raises a small red flag.
TORNADO ALERT – ★☆☆☆☆
Lightly raced colt who has yet to tackle turf in a two-race career which saw him win at the second time of asking at Newcastle over a mile. Plenty of potential but he is in at the deep end here, so others preferred.
WIMBLEDON HAWKEYE – ★★★☆☆
Performed with credit in the bet365 Craven Stakes on his comeback when looking in need of the run late behind Field Of Gold. Boasts plenty of experience of the Rowley Mile and, with some betting sites offering four places, he looks an enticing each-way price given he beat Ruling Court as a juvenile at York in the Acomb Stakes.
YAH MO BE THERE – ★☆☆☆☆
Talented sprinting juvenile in his own right and recorded a marginal career best in the Newbury trial for this race when starting sluggishly. Yard have enjoyed a good spring, but there remains a question mark about his effectiveness at this trip in this grade.
2,000 Guines Best Bets
Field Of Gold sets a strong standard courtesy of his scintillating success in the bet365 Craven Stakes. He was reportedly short of fitness that day so if he has improved then he must surely take all the beating with his stamina and track effectiveness assured. For those with access to betting sites offering four places, Wimbledon Hawkeye makes some appeal at a big price given he was second to Field Of Gold last month and has already beaten Ruling Court, while Expanded and Scorthy Champ appear the best of the rest.
Please gamble responsibly
When having a bet, it's vital to practice responsible gambling.
Sports betting can be addictive, so bettors should take precautions to keep themselves safe when using gambling sites.
Every licensed UK betting site should offer safer gambling tools, such as deposit limits, time outs, self-assessment questionnaires and self-exclusion options.
These are free tools to help punters stay in control and they are available at various gambling sites, including online bookmakers, casino sites, slot sites, and poker sites.
These operators may offer punters free bets or casino bonuses from time to time, but it's important to treat these rewards with caution.
Read the terms and conditions before accepting any bonus as most new casino sites will require you to place a cash bet before handing out the reward.
Always remember that betting is meant to be fun. It should never be viewed as a guaranteed way to make money.
If you ever feel like you need help or advice on gambling addiction, don't hesitate to contact one of the charities or organisations below.

Trailblazer Uriah Rennie remembered as a ‘special person' and ‘true gentleman'

The trailblazing official was born in Jamaica before moving to Sheffield aged six with his family and went on to oversee more than 300 games between 1997 and 2008, including 175 in the English top flight. Once labelled the 'fittest' match official in world football, Rennie recently revealed he was learning to walk again after a rare neurological condition left him paralysed from the waist down. His death was announced on Sunday and Chris Foy, a fellow former Premier League referee, paid an emotional tribute to his ex-colleague in an interview with talkSPORT on Monday morning. 'He was a gentleman, a gentle giant,' Foy said. 'He was a friend to me, a mentor to me, he was just a special person who put everybody first before himself. 'He was a real presence on the field and he was a real presence off the field, a true gentleman. He had a great personality. It was the things off the field that made him special. The Premier League is deeply saddened to hear of the passing of Uriah Rennie. As the first black referee in the Premier League, Uriah was a pioneering trailblazer whose legacy will live on, continuing to inspire future generations. Our thoughts are with his family and friends. — Premier League (@premierleague) June 9, 2025 'I remember one Christmas time, we were at training camp and he had organised for us to go into a special education needs school in Daventry. We spent some time with the children in that school. 'That was the mark of the man, off the field he was just special, he was a great communicator and a real people person.' Rennie started refereeing locally in 1979 before making history in 1997 when taking charge of his first Premier League match between Derby and Wimbledon. Vinnie Jones was among those booked. Rennie became a FIFA-listed referee in 2000 and joined the select group of professionals one year later before retiring in 2008. 'If it was difficult for him, he never showed it because he was always grounded. He loved refereeing,' Foy said. In November 2023 martial arts expert Rennie was awarded an honorary doctorate by Sheffield Hallam University for his distinguished contributions to sport and his work with South Yorkshire communities. Incredibly sad to hear of the passing of referee Uriah Rennie. A pioneer, trailblazer and a bloody good ref. Rest in peace, Ref. — Stan Collymore (@StanCollymore) June 8, 2025 He was last month installed as the chancellor of the university and was described by Foy as a 'real community hero in that part of the world'. Foy added: 'Away from football, he always had an escape from refereeing because of the other things he did in his life. He loved his community and charity work. He loved other sports, which we used to talk about fondly. 'We used to talk all the time. We only exchanged text messages on Friday. It's tough at the minute.' We are deeply saddened to hear the heartbreaking news about Uriah Rennie. Lazy Griff connections keep options open after Derby exploits

Middleham Park's director of operations, Mike Prince, said: 'It was a brilliant day and it was surreal watching him as he was coming round the bend and into the straight travelling so sweetly. 'There was just a split second where you thought 'he might just do it'! I think Christophe (Soumillon) thought that he would get past him (Lambourn), but the winner is obviously a good horse and he was super tough in that final furlong.' A huge thank you to @itvracing for capturing the incredible scenes after Lazy Griff's brilliant 2nd place finish in The Derby. This is syndication at its finest, sharing unforgettable moments together!💙🧡 📽️ITV Racing#TeamMPR #Derby2025 — Middleham Park Racing (@MprUpdates) June 7, 2025 Prince insists Lazy Griff's performance was not a huge surprise to his connections, particularly after the rain that fell on the Surrey Downs in the lead-up to the race. 'He'd worked well in the spring and he just missed a week before Chester, so we knew we were going into Chester undercooked and we knew he'd come on for it. So having seen him run such a big race there, that kind of cemented us going for the Derby,' Prince continued. 'The only issue was Charlie didn't want to run him on super fast ground, that was the only reason he wouldn't have gone to Epsom, but obviously the rain came which was helpful. 'We were thinking we could finish in the top six going in there – we weren't going there just for a day out that's for sure and Christophe obviously won a Group Three in France on him last year and I know he couldn't understand why he was such a big price either.' A trio of Group One assignments are on the table for the Protectionist colt's next start, while another tilt at Classic glory in the St Leger at Doncaster appears an obvious target. Prince said: 'There's the German Derby, the Irish Derby and the Grand Prix de Paris. No decision has been made as yet and obviously the ground will play a part – if it's fast anywhere we won't go. 'I think it will be one of those three and I'd say the percentage call at this point would be the Grand Prix de Paris, but it's certainly not set in stone and if it came up heavy in Ireland with proper soft ground that might change things. 'The St Leger would make sense later in the year as although he was quite fleet of foot there coming down the hill at Epsom, there is plenty of stamina in his pedigree, being by a Melbourne Cup winner, and I know after Chester Charlie said 'this is a Leger horse'.' Christophe Soumillon returns aboard Lazy Griff (PA) Wherever Lazy Griff turns up next it should be an exciting second half of the season for his 24 individual owners, which include George Griffiths, after whom the horse is named. Prince said: 'We have a policy where the first person to buy a 15 per cent share gets to name the horse and George also got his name on the racecard. He and his wife Amy were obviously on cloud nine on Saturday.'

Scott Carson's incredible Man City payday revealed as veteran goalkeeper quits after earning almost £3MILLION per save

SCOTT CARSON made himself a fortune at Manchester City despite only playing two games. The veteran goalkeeper left the club after six years following the end of his contract. 4 4 Carson, 39, collected nine honours during his time at the club, including four Premier League titles. The former Derby and Liverpool ace was well respected at the Etihad for his efforts behind the scenes. The four-time England international has been hailed as a "valued part" of the club's goalkeeping unit. Carson put in plenty of effort to help the likes of Stefan Ortega and Ederson. He has now left, but has not gone with empty pockets, having earned around £8.5million in wages. The staggering earnings become even more eye-watering as he only made three saves during his 107 minutes of action. This means each stop cost the Cityzens roughly £2.8m. Carson made two appearances for the Citizens with one coming in the Premier League and one in the Champions League. He played the full 90 minutes against Newcastle in May 2021 and conceded three goals in the 4-3 win. He made two saves in that game but was not beaten in his 17 minutes of action against Sporting Lisbon in March 2022. Kevin De Bruyne given emotional Etihad send off as Man City take huge leap towards return to Champions League Man City confirmed his exit with a statement on social media. It read: "After six seasons with the Club, Scott Carson will leave Manchester City when his contract expires this summer. "We would like to thank Scott for his hard work and dedication and wish him the very best of luck for the future." Carson started his career back in 2003 at Leeds United and went on to play for the likes of Liverpool, West Brom, Bursaspor and Wigan.
