Perplexity Labs debuts as AI workspace for building apps, reports, and more

Hindustan Times30-05-2025
Perplexity has announced the launch of Labs, a new feature designed to move beyond traditional AI search by enabling users to generate fully-formed projects like reports, dashboards, and web apps, all within a single workspace. The feature is now available to Pro subscribers and marks a significant shift from information retrieval to hands-on content creation.
While Perplexity built its reputation on rapid and accurate search via tools like Search and Deep Research (now rebranded simply as Research), Labs introduces a more proactive AI model. Rather than stopping at answers, Labs takes an idea and spends up to 10 minutes autonomously executing tasks, browsing the web, writing and running code, generating assets, and delivering structured outputs.

This means a user can input a prompt like 'Create a financial dashboard for Q2 revenue analysis,' and receive back charts, CSVs, visualisations, and even mini web applications. Files and outputs are automatically organised into dedicated Assets and App tabs, creating a cohesive workspace.
Perplexity says Labs can handle everything from meal planning to writing code to analysing datasets. For instance, a marketing professional could generate a comprehensive campaign strategy complete with charts and audience segmentation tools, while a developer could use it to scaffold a prototype web app, all without switching between platforms.
The tool also includes live code execution, enabling real-time manipulation of data and visuals. It effectively reduces the friction of using multiple tools for one project and positions Labs as an AI collaborator, not just an assistant.
Labs is currently available for Pro users via the mode selector in the Perplexity Web and mobile apps. Desktop versions for macOS and Windows are expected to roll out soon.
The company emphasised that Research will remain the ideal tool for quick deep dives, while Labs is built for more complex, time-intensive tasks. 'This marks a transition from passive inquiry to active creation,' Perplexity said in a blog post, signalling its ambition to become a platform for executing, not just exploring ideas.
With Labs, Perplexity is effectively pitching itself as a virtual project team, capable of replacing an array of traditional productivity tools with one AI-driven workspace.

Cloudflare Accuses Perplexity of Bypassing Bot Blocks; AI Firm Denies Claims

A fresh controversy has erupted in the tech world as Cloudflare, a leading internet infrastructure provider, has accused AI startup Perplexity of engaging in deceptive web scraping practices. The company alleges that Perplexity accessed content from websites that had explicitly restricted such activity, drawing attention once again to the murky boundaries of AI, data access, and internet ethics. In a blog post published Monday, Cloudflare claimed it detected Perplexity scraping content from sites that had added rules in their files to block such bots. According to Cloudflare, the AI firm allegedly circumvented these blocks by disguising its crawler's identity, including tactics like changing its user-agent strings and using multiple IP addresses to evade detection. 'This activity was observed across tens of thousands of domains and millions of requests per day,' the blog post stated. Cloudflare said it relied on a combination of machine learning tools and traffic analysis to pinpoint Perplexity as the source of the behavior. It added that some of the requests impersonated legitimate browsers, including Google Chrome on macOS. Cloudflare said the scraping came to its attention after several of its clients reported suspicious traffic coming from Perplexity, despite efforts to block it. In response, Cloudflare has now removed Perplexity's bots from its list of verified crawlers and introduced additional measures to prevent similar activity in the future. Perplexity has strongly denied the accusations, pushing back in a detailed rebuttal. The AI startup dismissed the claims as a 'sales pitch,' arguing that Cloudflare's blog post reflects a fundamental misunderstanding of how AI assistant's function. 'When Perplexity fetches a webpage, it's because a user asked a specific question,' the company stated. It emphasized that its AI platform does not engage in traditional web crawling or mass data harvesting. Instead, it claimed its system only retrieves real-time information when prompted by user queries and does not store or use that content to train its AI models. Further defending itself, Perplexity said that Cloudflare had wrongly attributed some of the automated traffic to its systems. It pointed to a third-party service, BrowserBase, suggesting that only a minor portion of the requests in question originated from there. 'This is a basic traffic analysis failure,' Perplexity argued, accusing Cloudflare of presenting misleading data and diagrams. The dispute comes at a time when the lines between helpful AI tools and unauthorized bots are increasingly blurred. As more AI applications rely on real-time data, concerns are growing among website operators over how their content is accessed and used. While Cloudflare has yet to issue a follow-up to Perplexity's rebuttal, the clash has already fueled broader discussions about ethical web scraping, AI transparency, and the urgent need for standardized guidelines on digital content access. With both companies standing firm on their positions, this incident may become a touchstone case in the ongoing struggle between open web advocates and those demanding tighter content controls in the AI era.

Valve Steam to end support for macOS version 11 on October 15: Here's why

American video game developer Valve Corporation has announced that it will soon end Steam support for macOS version 11 ("Big Sur"). As per Valve's announcement, Steam will officially stop supporting macOS version 11 on October 15. To keep using Steam and access any games or other content purchased through it, users must upgrade to a newer version of macOS. As per Valve, this update is necessary because Steam depends on an embedded version of Google Chrome, which no longer works with outdated macOS versions. Moreover, upcoming Steam releases will rely on system features and security enhancements available only in macOS 12 or newer. The video game developer further wrote: 'We strongly encourage all macOS 11 users to update sooner rather than later. Apple ended security updates and technical support for macOS 11 in 2023. Computers running these operating systems, when connected to the internet, are susceptible to new malware and other exploits which will not be patched. That malware can cause your computer, Steam and games to perform poorly or crash. That malware can also be used to steal the credentials for your Steam account or other services.' Valve's announcement coincides with its plans to transition Steam for Mac into a native Apple Silicon application, as Rosetta 2 support winds down. The company introduced the first native beta shortly after WWDC25. According to 9To5Mac, in the new beta version, Steam has been fully optimised to be a universal app, offering significantly quicker launch speeds, more responsive navigation and scrolling, and improved performance when accessing the Store and Community sections.
