DUSSELDORF (dpa): A man suffered severe burns from a powerful electric shock after climbing onto a stationary train at Cologne central station to take a selfie, German police said on Monday.
The man got too close to a power line, the police said in a statement.
Even without making direct contact, an electric arc was created with a current approximately 65 times stronger than that of a conventional power socket, they said.
The man fell from the train and was taken to the hospital with extensive burns. While conscious, he said he wanted to take a selfie, the police statement said.
The accident on Sunday caused significant disruption to rail services, affecting 24 trains, according to a spokeswoman. The police are looking for witnesses to the incident. - dpa

German rail sabotage causes third fire in two days

BERLIN: Germany's state rail operator Deutsche Bahn has reported a third deliberate fire in two days, following two earlier incidents that disrupted train services across the country. The latest fire occurred in Hohenmoelsen, Saxony-Anhalt, where rail cables were intentionally set ablaze. Investigations confirm the fire was an act of sabotage, similar to two earlier attacks in western Germany. The affected line, primarily used for coal transport, required extensive repairs. Deutsche Bahn has already restored service between Düsseldorf and Duisburg, where the first two fires took place just one kilometre apart. The initial fire near Düsseldorf caused severe disruptions on one of Germany's busiest rail routes, forcing the cancellation of 'several hundred' trains and impacting tens of thousands of passengers. A far-left group, the 'Angry Birds Kommando,' claimed responsibility, citing opposition to environmental destruction. German rail infrastructure has frequently been targeted by radical groups, raising concerns over security and operational stability. - AFP

Thieves use drones to spy on tourists on Thai 'White Lotus' island

Thieves are using drones to spy on tourists in Koh Phangan. — Pixabay Tourists on a Thai island whose 'Full Moon Parties' gained global fame with the most recent season of the hit series White Lotus have become victims of elaborate burglary plots aided by drones, according to local media. Burglars on the island of Koh Phangan have regularly been spying on tourists with drones to check on their location before breaking into their holiday accommodations. The tourist police have now arrested four suspected perpetrators, the newspaper Bangkok Post reported recently, citing authorities. The suspects, aged between 25 and 30, were said to be from the neighbouring country of Myanmar. The men reportedly used their drones to monitor various houses and apartments rented to tourists, quickly breaking in once they suspected an easy target. The number of such cases had increased in recent weeks, leading to complaints. The group admitted to spending the stolen money on drugs. Officers reportedly seized more than 60 methamphetamine pills from them. Koh Phangan, located in the Gulf of Thailand, is one of the kingdom's most popular islands. It attracts young people from all over the world, especially to the Full Moon Parties at Haad Rin Beach. Yoga enthusiasts, on the other hand, are drawn to the island's numerous retreats and spas. The satirical drama White Lotus boosted local tourism with a third season in February that took viewers to a fictional high-end holiday resort in Thailand, with some scenes reported to have been shot on Koh Phangan. – dpa
