Singareni coal too costly, top cos look to end agreements
1 2 Hyderabad: Managers of the century-old Singareni Collieries Company Limited (SCCL), which registered more than Rs 4,700 crore in profits in 2023-24, are a worried lot these days. Four of the six major customers of the company have said they want to terminate their coal supply agreements due to high prices. The customers include National Thermal Power Corporation (NTPC), Maharashtra Genco, Karnataka Genco, and AP Genco. While Coal India Limited (CIL) supplies coal at about Rs 2,000 per tonne, SCCL provides it at between Rs 4,000 and Rs 6,000 per tonne, including taxes and transportation. Besides, some state power companies, including Telangana Genco, have bought coal blocks, and private companies have been offering coal at much cheaper rates. The remaining 10% is sold to medium and small-scale industries. If the major power companies opt out of their supply agreements, SCCL may plunge into crisis. Among the major clients, NTPC takes about 38 million tonnes, Karnataka about 10 MTs, and AP Genco 7 MTs. Both NTPC and SCCL held a meeting in Jan, but could not strike a deal. NTPC also wrote a letter to the Union coal ministry on Aug 4, 2025, proposing to formally surrender its existing linkage with SCCL as no fuel supply agreement had been executed and there were no commercial obligations between the two. "We have received letters from various state thermal power companies and also NTPC to review coal linkage. We are working out a strategy on how to deal with the current situation. The immediate measure is reducing coal prices by about Rs 600 to Rs 700 per tonne. A decision will be taken in consultation with the state govt and clients," SCCL CMD N Balaram told TOI. Sources said SCCL may come up with reforms to reduce coal production cost, as 50% of its revenue goes towards salaries. Also, the quality of Singareni coal is medium. Its clients are looking for cheaper coal which they get even from far away places because of railway connectivity and dedicated freight corridors. "Coal India Limited is offering coal at a cheaper price as its production has increased enormously, from about 500 million tonnes in 2018-19 to around 800 MTs last year. SCCL production increased from 62 MTs to 72 MTs for the same period. The only advantage for Singareni is the geographical location, as we are in the middle of states like Maharashtra, AP, and even Karnataka in South India," a senior SCCL official said.
