EFL Trophy: Peterborough fan hopes egg will bring good luck
A Peterborough United fan believes eating a hard-boiled egg at Wembley Stadium will help his side poach victory in their cup final.Kevin Chapman has eaten the poultry snack before all four of Peterborough's previous appearances at the stadium - and Posh soldiered to victory each time. But this year's EFL Trophy final on Sunday is the egg's toughest test yet, as Darren Ferguson's side take on League One champions-elect Birmingham City."Imagine if we do pull it off, I'm absolutely claiming it is all thanks to the eggs," the 42-year-old said.
The team's 80-mile (128km) trip to the capital marks the second time in two seasons they have contested the competition's final.More than 22,000 of their supporters were attended last year to witness Harrison Burrows' late double in a 2-1 win over Wycombe Wanderers.
Among them was Mr Chapman, his dad Andy and his brother Callum - who all witnessed Posh's other previous Wembley wins in 1992, 2000 and 2014."We've never lost there, so I kind of think that's all thanks to us," he said.Mr Chapman knew his side were facing stiff opposition this time round, with high-flying Birmingham having lost just three league games all season."Of all the times we've been, this is the one where I'm least confident going in," said Mr Chapman, whose first Wembley egg was in a packed lunch made by his mum."If it wasn't for the eggs, I'd be expecting a pretty miserable day."
The supporter said he could have preserved "the magic of the eggs" by not eating one ahead of a challenging game, but instead opted for defiance. The tradition is guided by strict rules too, with the luck only working if the egg is eaten on the stadium's iconic steps."We've been training the eggs up and now we really need them to pull through for us and maintain our 100% Wembley record," Mr Chapman said.He warned there was a plan up his sleeve for if Peterborough did lose, however."We'll just change the assumption and say they always work in play-off finals instead," Mr Chapman added."I'm not going to give up my hard-boiled egg."

Aberdeen signs Australian striker Kusini Yengi on free transfer
Aberdeen have signed their third Australian of the summer after targeting former Portsmouth striker Kusini Yengi. The 26-year-old will arrive at Pittodrie on a free transfer when his Fratton Park contract expires in the coming days. Yengi – whose brother Tete plays for Livingston – has scored six goals in 11 internationals for the Socceroos. The forward scored five goals in his first five games for Portsmouth after arriving from Western Sydney Wanderers in 2023 and netted 13 goals in all in his debut campaign as Pompey won the League One title. But he failed to find the net for his club in an injury-hampered second season and will look to kick-start his career at Pittodrie having been released by Pompey. Aberdeen manager Jimmy Thelin, who has also signed Australian goalkeeper Nick Suman and winger Nicolas Milanovic this summer, said: 'We were quite specific about the type of profile we had identified to play as a striker for Aberdeen and Kusini has a lot of the qualities we were after. 'He is tall, strong and quick, he will work hard for the team and lead the line. He has also proven at both Portsmouth and with the Socceroos that he can score goals on a consistent basis. 'It is important for us to have different profiles of players who can bring specific strengths to our shape and how we want to play. 'With European group stage football and a busy domestic schedule, he will play a vital role for us in what we hope will be a competitive squad.' The 6ft 2in striker said: 'It feels great to be an Aberdeen player and I can't wait to get started. I'm looking forward to playing here for several years. 'The manager and staff have all been very positive and their enthusiasm was one of the main reasons I chose to come here. 'I loved the project that was pitched to me – what the manager and coaches want to achieve and what they stand for, where they think they can utilise me as a player to help the club. So I was very excited. 'Every kid dreams of playing European football and playing for big clubs like Aberdeen so I am very excited to play in those competitions and represent Aberdeen.' Aaron Ramsey swaps Cardiff manager job for unexpected new playing role
Aaron Ramsey had been the bookmakers' favourite to become the next permanent Cardiff City manager, but instead he will continue his playing career a long way from Wales. The 34-year-old returned to Cardiff for a third stint in 2023, signing a two-year deal after a brief spell with French club Nice. The Bluebirds struggled in the Championship last season and after manager Omer Riza was dismissed in April, Ramsey was appointed interim manager for the final three games of the season. He could do nothing to stop Cardiff slipping into League One, finishing bottom of the Championship as they won just nine of their 46 league games. Despite this, Ramsey was being strongly linked with taking the job on a permanent basis, with the bookmakers considering him favourite for the role. There has been a surprising turn of events, though, as Ramsey will not only turn away from the chance to manage Cardiff, but he will extend his playing career in Mexico. PA report that the former Arsenal and Juventus midfielder has agreed to sign for Pumas, officially known as Club Universidad Nacional. Ramsey and Pumas manager Efrain Juarez share the same agent. The 86-cap Wales international made just eight Championship appearances for Cardiff last season and 10 in all competitions. Hamstring injuries hampered his campaign significantly after a knee problem had limited him to just 13 appearances in the previous campaign. Injuries have been an issue for the Welshman over his career, but will hope to stay fit and enjoy a surprise swansong in Mexico City. Ramsey will be the only British player in the Pumas squad and only the second European after Spaniard Ruben Duarte. Ramsey began his professional career with Cardiff when he became the club's youngest ever player by making his debut in 2007. He signed for Arsenal the following year and went on to make 369 appearances for the Gunners, scoring 64 goals and winning three FA Cups. More Trending The midfielder moved to Juventus on a free transfer in 2019, earning reported £400,000-a-week wages and he won Serie A in his first season with the Old Lady. Arsenal FA Cup: 2013-14, 2014-15, 2016-17 Juventus Serie A: 2019-20 Coppa Italia: 2020-21 Rangers Scottish Cup: 2021-22 However, he would only make 70 appearances for the Turin giants before leaving for Nice in 2022 after a loan spell with Rangers. His return to Cardiff in 2023 was his third spell with the Bluebirds as he also had a loan stint back in Wales during his Arsenal days. Ramsey's three games in interim charge returned two draws and a loss, with Cardiff finishing rock bottom of the Championship.
