Imported mare Golden Smile faced a stiff challenge when she stepped up to city company last start but trainer Kris Lees looks to have found an ideal race back in provincial company
Golden Smile placed in her first three starts this campaign before breaking through with a big all-the-way win in a Newcastle Maiden on a Heavy 10 over 1890m before stepping up to a Benchmark 64 on the Kensington 11 days later when fifth to Rotagilla over 1800m.
'She was very good in winning but the wet track may have aided her,' said Lees.
'It was a big jump going to town last start and coming back a little in distance could have been detrimental to her.
'Going up to 2100 metres this week looks a nice option for her. 'She is still going to get a winter track this week and she seems to be in good order.'
The Form: Complete NSW Racing thoroughbred form, including video replays and all you need to know about every horse, jockey and trainer. Find a winner here!
The daughter of Sea The Stars drops back to a Class 1 and Maiden Plate and steps up to 2100m.
'This looks a nice race for her. A bit of a gap between runs may suit her as well being a European-bred mare,' he said.
Lightly-raced three-year-old Hawker Hall kicked off his campaign with a three-and-a-half length win over 900m on his home track on April 23 and wasn't seen on raceday again until May 26 when fifth to Prima Bella on a Heavy 10 over the same track and distance.
He steps up to 1100m this week in the Class 1 Handicap with Jason Collett back on board.
'We wanted to find the right track and run him at home again,' Lees said.
'The other day, it might have just been a bit too heavy for him.
'He's a big, heavy horse and he does like a bit of cut in the ground but not really testing like it was.
'It was just a bit waterlogged that track and made a bit of hard work for him.
'He might be better suited now getting out over just a little bit further to get a more controlled run (in front).'
Lees has been pleased with the form of Surreal I Am in Queensland this preparation where he has won two of his three starts and feels he deserves a chance back in New South Wales.
The gelding lines up in the Benchmark 64 Handicap (1600m) where he will make his presence felt.
'His two wins on the Sunshine Coast were on the polytrack but that said, I can't fault him at home,' he said.
'He will be a place chance.'
Joining him in that race is Oakfield Mamselle who is resuming from a spell.
While she has a win and a second from three first-up runs, Lees feels she will be improved by this run.
'She seems to be coming up well. Her trials were only fair but her work since has been pleasing,' he said.
Lees' other runner for the meeting is Enchanted World in the opening race, the 2&3YO Maiden Handicap (1100m).
The daughter of Ardrossan debuted on her home track on May 26 where she settled last and came between runners in the straight to finish a three-and-a-quarter length second behind Pratt.
'She was okay on debut and will appreciate stepping up a little in trip,' said Lees.
Lees also has Denuto and Irish Thunder running at Ballina and feels they will be competitive in their respective assignments.
'Denuto hasn't been far away and is close to getting a result. Hopefully he can break through,' he said.
'Irish Thunder ran well first-up. He just got hampered a little.
'He has improved from that and should run well.'

The week started well for trainer Scott Henley when stable star Volcanic Love trialled stylishly at Grafton and he hopes it can end on a high note with a winning double.
Henley was pleased when the meeting originally set for Lismore was moved to Ballina when his promising filly Confederate Lady races so well.
The three-year-old had her first three starts at the track where she recorded an impressive maiden win over 1012m at just her second career start and placed in her other two runs at the venue.
'I'm definitely not disappointed they moved the meeting to Ballina. She loves the joint,' said Henley.
Since resuming with a close third in a Class 1 on a Heavy 10 at Ballina on April 8, Confederate Lady has finished third behind the promising Seymour Stars at Port Macquarie and an unlucky fourth to Takemine at Inverell.
'She was just a gallop short going into that run because we'd had plenty of rain up here and couldn't get her tied right down.
'Then she ran into a good horse at Port Macquarie.
'Last start she got back further than we expected and was a bit stiff.
The daughter of Supido is out to add to her record when she steps out in the Benchmark 58 Handicap (1000m) where she has drawn barrier 15 although she will come in after scratchings.
'I had her in a couple of Class 1 races that were washed out and the only available race at the next meeting has been a Benchmark 58,' he said.
'Each time in those Class 1s, to my way of thinking, she was a good thing.
'In the (benchmark) 58s, we go from a good thing to just a chance.
'From a wide gate this week, she is just a good chance with luck in running.'
Henley has been pleased with the two runs of former Victorian three-year-old Zouandme and gives him a good chance in the Country Boosted Maiden Plate (1000m).
The gelding raced on a hot speed when seventh at Grafton first-up before being beaten just over a length when sixth at Inverell.
'He has those two runs,' he said.
'He was big in condition first-up and had a good blow after the race.
'He improved a fair bit off that going into the race at Inverell and has come on nicely since then.
'The only reservation I have is the very heavy track.'

Cricket 2025: Josh Inglis is ‘Australia's next Test captain', but he isn't in the team

Don't miss out on the headlines from Cricket. Followed categories will be added to My News. All eyes are on the World Test Championship (WTC) Final right now but Australia's Test team could look quite different when the squad heads to the West Indies later this month. Australia are aiming to win back-to-back WTC maces with victory in the final at Lord's against South Africa, which is set to be a quick match after 14 wickets fell on Day 1 as Steve Smith made history. Watch England vs India Test Series LIVE & EXCLUSIVE on Fox Cricket, available on Kayo Sports | New to Kayo? Get your first month for just $1. Limited time offer. The Aussies are boasting renewed depth in their Test squad, with Sam Konstas, Scott Boland and Josh Inglis unlucky to miss out on the WTC final given their strong recent form for the national side. Respected cricket commentator Adam Collins told SEN's Cricket podcast ahead of the WTC Final he believes Inglis will be Australia's next Test captain despite the fact he is currently not in the team. 'I've got to say for the record, I'm a huge Inglis guy,' Collins said. 'I think Josh Inglis will be Australia's next Test captain. I think, over time, there will be a case for him to be invested in across the board.' It's a bold call by Collins given the likes of Travis Head (age 31), Alex Carey (33) and Cameron Green (26) have been mentioned as future Test captains. Pat Cummins has captained Australia since the 2021-22 Ashes and the 32-year-old fast bowler has signalled he has no plans to give up the captaincy anytime soon as he continues to win trophies. Is Josh Inglis (left) Australia's next Test captain? (Photo by) Inglis was born in the UK but moved to Australia when he was 14, going on to win domestic titles in all three formats with Western Australia and the Perth Scorchers. He was part of the Australian squads that won the 2021 T20 World Cup, the 2023 ODI World Cup and the 2023 World Test Championship Final. Inglis, 30, already belongs to an exclusive club of just five Australian players who have scored Test, ODI and T20I centuries — along with Shane Watson, Glenn Maxwell, David Warner and Beth Mooney. His rapid fire century on Test debut in Sri Lanka earlier this year reinforced his credentials as a red ball player, as a wicketkeeper or batter only, after strong form in the Sheffield Shield. But with Alex Carey's near impeccable form with the gloves and the bat in recent years, it remains to be seen how Inglis fits into the Australian team, given the emergence of Beau Webster and Cam Green's return from injury. Inglis, Konstas and Boland are likely to feature in Australia's tour of the West Indies that begins later this month, featuring three Tests and five T20s. KODIKARA / AFP) The trio were overlooked for the WTC Final but Cummins has strongly hinted they will have a role to play against the West Indies, which serves as a key audition ahead of this summer's home Ashes. Collins added: 'Round 1 of the next cycle in the Windies, I'd be almost certain Konstas plays, but this is a bit different being a one-off final.' Pressure is mounting on Marnus Labuschagne's spot in the XI, with Konstas set to take his spot at the top of the order in the West Indies. The three-Test series, plus all five T20 Internationals, will be broadcast live on ESPN from June 26 to July 29. ESPN is available to all Kayo Sports subscribers as part of their existing subscription. Australia has not visited the Caribbean for a Test series in 10 years, while the last edition of the Frank Worrell Trophy in 2023-24 was drawn 1-1. The latest renewal of this historic rivalry begins in Barbados with the first Test from June 26-30, followed by the second Test in Grenada from July 4-8 and a day-night Test in Jamaica from July 13-17. Sam Konstas will get his chance to play in the West Indies. Following the Frank Worrell Trophy, the two nations will face off in five T20Is from July 21-29. The series will form a crucial part of both sides' preparation for the 2026 ICC T20 World Cup. AFL trade news: Huge Harley Reid asking price, free agency latest

Don't miss out on the headlines from AFL. Followed categories will be added to My News. Some Victorian clubs are getting cold feet on bids this year for Harley Reid given the vast bounty they would have to give up and his likely astronomical wage. For Reid to move back this year and break his contract he would need to be paid at least $1.8 million a season on a long-term deal. While he has had his moments, he has also had his challenges with up-and-down form for the battling Eagles. Contracted until the end of 2026, those close to him have also given off the feeling that he is easing into Perth life. Richmond and Essendon both have a pair of top-10 picks while Geelong is seen as another suitor for Reid. Reid is rated below average by Champion Data for disposals, clearances and contested possessions but above average for his kicking. The brilliant second-year star had a disrupted pre-season and is certain to emerge as one of the stars of the game. But clubs committing as many as three first round picks would need to be certain he is a generational player to hand him upwards of $10 million in six year deals or longerr STARCEVICH, WORPEL WEIGH UP OFFERS Brisbane defender Brandon Starcevich is keen to remain at the Lions now that he has overcome his concussion battle as the list of restricted free agents shrinks to three. Starcevich, Hawthorn's James Worpel and West Coast's Oscar Allen are the only restricted agents on a day when Collingwood's unrestricted free agent Brayden Maynard locked in a four-year deal. Starcevich's contract talks have been on hold, but now that he is back this weekend in Lions colours he will again get those talks back on track. The WA local had requested a two-year offer from the Lions in a deal that would have given him the option of unrestricted free agency or a move to Tasmania in 2028. But he could end up asking for a longer deal or take up that offer to 2028 after going home in coming weeks to ensure he is keen to be locked in at the Lions. The fact he is a restricted free agent as one of the top nine paid players at Brisbane shows he has been well rewarded for his form. The Herald Sun reported last week that Carlton is certain unrestricted free agent Jack Silvagni will remain at the club as talks near. Silvagni is keen to stay at Carlton and will secure a pay rise after his spectacular year as a key position defender. But those talks will still have to resolve how many years the 27-year-old signs for and the scope of that pay rise. If rivals were clamouring for his services it would be easier to get a huge deal but he is likely to settle for a more modest rise to remain a third-generation Blue. Hawthorn's James Worpel is also considering whether to accept a similar two-year offer that would give him the chance to use Tasmania as leverage or even move south. The Hawks remain confident he will stay but to this stage have not blown him off the park with their offer. Essendon's unrestricted Sam Draper is a long way apart on financial terms with the Dons on a four-year deal but in an ideal world would like to stay if he can play in his preferred position as first ruck. Draper is unrestricted after the Dons completed 2024 deals for players including Jy Caldwell that put him out of the club's top nine players for 2025. SUNS FACE NERVOUS WAIT AS ROWELL WEIGHS UP FUTURE Gold Coast star Matt Rowell has gone away with mates across the mid-season bye before considering his future as the Suns nervously await a decision. They are confident he will soon commence contract talks that would see him likely locked away for two more years to free agency. But given that timeline for talks has been easing back since round 8, there is a real sense of nervousness at Gold Coast. The Suns would want an A grader in return for Rowell if he did decide to leave instead of draft picks, which means a trade would be especially hard to broker. Gold Coast is in the window and so isn't interested in draft picks for yet more kids, but remains bullish he is just concentrating on his own form before committing MCVEE TO STAY A DEMON BUT IN NO RUSH TO SIGN Melbourne's Judd McVee wants to stay at the Demons but isn't yet in a hurry to commit. The West Australia's management met with the Demons last week but the offer is not yet at a stage where he would be keen to sign it. With McVee back from a long-running hamstring injury, Daniel Turner emerging as an intercepting back and Jake Bowey in terrific form, the Demons backline is taking shape. Steven May was in super form in the one-point loss to Collingwood, with Jake Lever easing back from an ankle concern. So the nucleus of the Demons' back six is there for future years, which makes securing 21-year-old McVee so important given he can lock away dangerous smalls and mid-sizers. DOGS EYE NEXT DEALS DESPITE BONT DELAY The Dogs will turn their attention to trying to secure youngsters including Joel Freijah long-term in coming weeks even as they work on a deal for 2025 free agent Marcus Bontempelli. The Dogs are adamant Bontempelli is no chance to leave the club but has just had some life issues including his engagement and the starting of a new cafe to concentrate on. Those talks should kick off in coming weeks. Veterans Liam Jones and Adam Treloar are also out of contract this year. Freijah is out of contract next year along with Ryley Sanders, Harvey Gallagher and Jordan Croft. Freijah is one of footy's rising stars given his emergence as a pacy, explosive midfielder, while Sanders is in no hurry given he is a Tasmanian likely to get a massive multimillion-dollar offer to move south. Injury sidelines unbeaten TAB Eureka favourite Always Hot

Australia's most exciting pacer and early TAB Eureka favourite Always Hot has been sidelined by injury and will miss the world's richest harness race. Always Hot was $3.50 favourite for the $2.1m TAB Eureka in September before his owner-breeder Peter Gleeson confirmed the three-year-old had gone to the paddock after some 'hot spots' were revealed in a recent full body scan. • PUNT LIKE A PRO: Become a Racenet iQ member and get expert tips – with fully transparent return on investment statistics – from Racenet's team of professional punters at our Pro Tips section. SUBSCRIBE NOW! The colt has won all eight starts, including a dominant display at his most recent run in the Group 1 NSW Derby on March 8. 'It's not the end of the world, but it's certainly very disappointing,' Gleeson said. 'He looked a great chance in the Eureka and some other big races, but the recommendation was to give him eight to 10 weeks in the paddock rather than risk bone chips or something worse. 'You just can't press on when you hear that. There's still a lot of money to be won as an older horse if we do the right thing by him now. We've been patient so far and will continue to be, to give him every chance. 'Depending on what the scan shows after this time out, he could be back for races like the Vicbred and Breeders Crown towards the end of the year. Or, we could just wait and target the Chariots Of Fire early next year.' It's a huge blow to Gleeson, especially with Always Hot being the best horse he's had since the freakish Ride High, who won 16 of his 18 starts between 2018 and 2000 before being cut down in his prime with injury. 'It would've been nice after losing Ride High too early if this guy could have won me two or three million … maybe still can,' Gleeson said. 'Like Ride High, Always Hot is a big, big fella and you've got to be extra cautious with them given the pressure they put on their legs.' In a double blow, Gleeson, one of Australia's most influential owner-breeders, also revealed his superstar young mare Very Pretty would also miss the TAB Eureka. The four-year-old has won nine of her 10 starts and finished second in the other, but hasn't raced since a Melton win on August 17, last year. 'We've had a really frustrating run with her,' Gleeson said. 'She just wasn't herself, but the vets could never pinpoint what it was late last year when she missed the Victoria Oaks, Vicbred and Breeders Crown. 'She was close to racing again and got a bit of a bump in training and has gone to the paddock again. It's only minor, but the timing isn't great with those big races not far away. 'She's such a good mare she'd have in the TAB Eureka up to her ears, but it's not to be. 'People haven't seen the best of her. Clayton (Tonkin, co-trainer) said to me one day she was a champion mare and he's not one to throw around tags like that. 'Hopefully she gets through this quickly and well and we can see her racing again later this year, too.' Gleeson is still hopeful of being a player in the upcoming Queensland Constellations carnival with his three-year-olds. 'Go Miki might go for the Queensland Derby, while Looks Perfect, who won only two starts last year and won well in a recent Terang trial, could head to the Oaks,' he said.
