Atletico Madrid activate release clause for 17-year-old attacking talent
Atletico Madrid have moved to secure one Spain's emerging talents, with Los Rojiblancos playing a significant fee for a teenager without a senior appearances. Elche have announced that Atletico have activated the release clause of under-19s star Daniel Fitzgerald.
The 17-year-old, who has both Spanish and English citizenship, signed his first professional contract last year, and this season made his debut with Elche's B team, Elche Ilicitano, who play in Spain's fourth tier. He came on up front for the final 14 minutes of their clash against Andratx, and added a fifth goal in a 5-0 win in his first appearance.
Atletico Madrid pay Fitzgerald release clause
The Valencian club have announced that Atletico have paid Fitzgerald's €150k release clause, despite their best attempts to hold on to their teenage promise. Diario AS say that Elche had offered him a fresh deal, with the promise of senior football for the newly promoted La Liga side in the near future. However he will sign a three-year deal with Atletico, and is set to join their under-19 side. It is a level he is already familiar with, having moved up the ranks quickly with Elche.

Comparisons with Alex Baena
Los Colchoneros have been heavily linked with Villarreal playmaker Alex Baena this summer, and the Madrid-based paper go on to say that Fitzgerald has drawn comparisons with the Spain international. Although he is capable of playing across the forward line, he plays best behind the forwards, and stands out for his ability to play the decisive pass.
Fitzgerald must impress Fernando Torres and Diego Simeone
Fitzgerald will face the tough task of breaking into Atletico's senior team in the coming years, with Pablo Barrios the only notable entry into the first team since Koke Resurreccion and Saul Niguez. If he stands out at under-19 level, it will be Fernando Torres in charge of the B team who will assess his readiness for senior football, before passing under the eyes of Diego Simeone.

After a flurry of business in this transfer window for Liverpool, another player who could be leaving soon is Darwin Nunez. The Uruguayan international is rumoured to be in talks with clubs outside of England, most notably current Serie A champions Napoli. Liverpool's Federico Chiesa is also rumoured to return to Italy by joining them this summer. Advertisement Despite the building speculation, former Liverpool full-back Glen Johnson recently spoke to about Darwin's time with the Reds and how he feels there could still be hope for the 26-year-old. "I just think he does so much more for the team and his teammates than fans or the press gives him credit for.' However there have been several times where the forward should have added to that tally. Advertisement 'Of course, strikers are going to be judged on goals and numbers, rightly so, but you can ask any Liverpool player, and they would love him to be in the team," Johnson continued. "The defenders don´t want to play against him, and that gives the other guys the space to do what they are doing.' Nunez has a contract with Liverpool until summer 2028, but with three years of the six-year deal complete, there are strong concerns about whether the entire term will be fulfilled. Johnson also said: 'But eventually, the numbers do count, and if he doesn´t have a big year now, he probably will be moved on.' Real Madrid's Luka Modric expected to sign with AC Milan

Photo by Raul Caro/EPA-EFE June 25 (UPI) -- Veteran midfielder Luka Modric is expected to sign with AC Milan of Italy's Serie A after playing for Real Madrid at the Club World Cup, sporting director Igli Tare told reporters in Italy. "I spoke to him in person and saw a guy who is really eager to be competitive," Tare said, according to Gazzetta dello Sport. "His arrival is crucial for a group that needs players like him, leadership. "The first question Luka asked me was: 'Will we be a team built to win the championship? He has won six Champions Leagues and wants to be a star player from the start. "He is important for what he will convey in terms of mentality, leadership and professionalism. The fact that he is an AC Milan fan makes this story even more exciting, and it would be great for him to have a stellar season as at the end of the season is the World Cup." Sources told ESPN that Modric agreed to sign a one-year deal with an option for an additional season. He is set to make $4 million annually. Modric, 39, announced in May that he will leave Madrid this summer after the Club World Cup, ending his 13-year tenure with the Spanish La Liga power. He won a club-record 28 trophies during his decorated tenure with Madrid. Modric totaled 43 goals and 95 assists over nearly 600 appearances for the club. Madrid will take on RB Salzburg in their final Club World Cup group stage match at 9 p.m. EDT Thursday at Lincoln Financial Field in Philadelphia.
