ICRC, EU: 2025 could see more deterioration in humanitarian workers' safety

Saba Yemen08-05-2025
Gaza - Saba:
On World Red Cross and Red Crescent Day, the President of the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) and the President of the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC) affirmed in a joint statement that 'the international community cannot continue to turn a blind eye to violations of the rules of war, while humanitarian workers are deliberately targeted.'
The statement said: 'Every attack against humanitarian workers is an attack on the communities they serve, and a violation of the laws designed to protect civilians and alleviate suffering during conflict.'
The statement added: 'On this World Red Cross and Red Crescent Day, we remember with profound sorrow our colleagues who lost their lives in horrific circumstances while trying to save lives. Their loss of life demands more than just words of outrage; it demands action."
"The brutal killing of our colleagues from the Palestine Red Crescent Society last March sparked widespread global condemnation. But their story is neither isolated nor exceptional. From Gaza to Sudan, Ukraine, the Democratic Republic of the Congo, and beyond, our colleagues are coming under fire while carrying out their humanitarian duties—whether driving ambulances, distributing aid, or trying to reach communities most in need on the front lines."
"We have already lost ten of our colleagues this year. This comes on the heels of the deadliest year on record for humanitarian workers, with the International Red Cross and Red Crescent Movement alone losing 38 of its staff and volunteers in 2024. If this alarming pattern continues, 2025 could see a further deterioration in the safety of humanitarian workers."

Hamas: Zionist Enemy's abduction of Dr. Al-Hams is escalation in targeting Gaza's Medical Sector

Gaza – SABA: The Islamic Resistance Movement (Hamas) condemned the Zionist enemy's abduction of Dr. Marwan Al-Hams, director of field hospitals in the Gaza Strip, calling it a continuation of the systematic criminal targeting of the medical sector and its personnel—through killing, arrest, or intimidation. In a statement received by the Yemeni News Agency (SABA), Hamas denounced the Israeli forces for kidnapping Dr. Al-Hams and opening fire directly on the ambulance transporting him and his companions during his visit to a field hospital affiliated with the International Committee of the Red Cross in Rafah City. Hamas held the Israeli occupation fully responsible for his life, along with the lives of hundreds of detained medical professionals held under inhumane conditions. The movement called on the international community and its institutions—particularly the International Committee of the Red Cross and the World Health Organization—to condemn this crime, pressure for the release of detained doctors, and confront the genocidal war that continues to target all aspects of life in Gaza. Rights Center Condemns Denial of Access to Missing Persons in Gaza and Red Cross Inaction

Gaza – Saba: The Palestinian Center for the Missing and Forcibly Disappeared Persons on Tuesday condemned the ongoing denial of access for civil defense teams to areas where victims have gone missing in the Gaza Strip, and the lack of response by the International Committee of the Red Cross to urgent appeals from Palestinian citizens to rescue their loved ones. In a statement, the center confirmed the existence of major challenges in documenting the number of martyrs and missing persons due to ongoing Israeli attacks and limited resources. The center strongly criticized the Israeli occupation forces for preventing civil defense teams from reaching areas where victims are believed to be located. It also expressed astonishment at the response of the International Red Cross, which has received appeals from numerous parties but has failed to take action. The center further condemned the Israeli practice of withholding information about forcibly disappeared individuals, leaving families in the dark about the fate of their loved ones and compounding their suffering. The center called on the United Nations and the international community to launch an independent investigation into the fate of thousands of detainees from Gaza and to hold Israel accountable for crimes committed against them. It highlighted that thousands of families in Gaza continue to live in torment, waiting for news about their missing relatives, amid the absence of any effective international body tracking the fate of the disappeared. The center emphasized the urgent need to break the silence and act before it is too late. According to local estimates and testimonies from residents, Israeli forces have detained more than 11,000 Palestinian citizens since the beginning of the aggression on Gaza, subjecting them to various forms of abuse and torture, and executing a large number of them. 27 Palestinians Martyred in 'Aid Massacre' in Southern Gaza Strip

Gaza – SABA: The International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) confirmed that 27 Palestinians were martyred early Tuesday due to gunfire near an aid distribution center west of Rafah city in southern Gaza Strip, in an incident that sparked widespread international condemnation and calls for an independent investigation. Earlier in the day, Palestinian sources reported that 27 people were killed and more than 90 others injured as a result of Israeli occupation forces shelling and opening fire on thousands heading to the aid center west of Rafah. In a statement, the ICRC said its field hospital in Rafah received 184 wounded individuals, 19 of whom were declared dead upon arrival, while 8 others later succumbed to their injuries. The committee noted that 'most of the injuries were gunshot wounds.' It described the incident as 'the deadliest in terms of casualties since the hospital was established over a year ago,' stressing that the number of victims far exceeded the hospital's 60-bed capacity. Meanwhile, Mahmoud Basal, spokesperson for Gaza's Civil Defense, said the massacre targeted citizens waiting for American aid near the Al-Alam roundabout in the Al-Mawasi area west of Rafah, adding that more than 90 people were injured in the attack. On the international front, UN Secretary-General António Guterres strongly condemned the incident, calling it 'unacceptable.' His spokesperson, Stéphane Dujarric, said: 'Civilians should not lose their lives simply because they are trying to get food,' reiterating the Secretary-General's call for an immediate and independent investigation and for those responsible to be held accountable. This deadly incident comes amid catastrophic humanitarian conditions in Gaza, where the population faces severe shortages of food, water, and medicine after nearly twenty months of an ongoing genocide, and where humanitarian aid delivery remains an immense challenge.
