ICRC, EU: 2025 could see more deterioration in humanitarian workers' safety

On World Red Cross and Red Crescent Day, the President of the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) and the President of the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC) affirmed in a joint statement that 'the international community cannot continue to turn a blind eye to violations of the rules of war, while humanitarian workers are deliberately targeted.'
The statement said: 'Every attack against humanitarian workers is an attack on the communities they serve, and a violation of the laws designed to protect civilians and alleviate suffering during conflict.'
The statement added: 'On this World Red Cross and Red Crescent Day, we remember with profound sorrow our colleagues who lost their lives in horrific circumstances while trying to save lives. Their loss of life demands more than just words of outrage; it demands action."
"The brutal killing of our colleagues from the Palestine Red Crescent Society last March sparked widespread global condemnation. But their story is neither isolated nor exceptional. From Gaza to Sudan, Ukraine, the Democratic Republic of the Congo, and beyond, our colleagues are coming under fire while carrying out their humanitarian duties—whether driving ambulances, distributing aid, or trying to reach communities most in need on the front lines."
"We have already lost ten of our colleagues this year. This comes on the heels of the deadliest year on record for humanitarian workers, with the International Red Cross and Red Crescent Movement alone losing 38 of its staff and volunteers in 2024. If this alarming pattern continues, 2025 could see a further deterioration in the safety of humanitarian workers."

Meanwhile, Mahmoud Basal, spokesperson for Gaza's Civil Defense, said the massacre targeted citizens waiting for American aid near the Al-Alam roundabout in the Al-Mawasi area west of Rafah, adding that more than 90 people were injured in the attack. On the international front, UN Secretary-General António Guterres strongly condemned the incident, calling it 'unacceptable.' His spokesperson, Stéphane Dujarric, said: 'Civilians should not lose their lives simply because they are trying to get food,' reiterating the Secretary-General's call for an immediate and independent investigation and for those responsible to be held accountable. This deadly incident comes amid catastrophic humanitarian conditions in Gaza, where the population faces severe shortages of food, water, and medicine after nearly twenty months of an ongoing genocide, and where humanitarian aid delivery remains an immense challenge. FM Stresses Importance of Understanding International Humanitarian Law
Sana'a - (Saba): The Foreign of Minister Affairs and Expatriates, Jamal Amer, stressed the importance of understanding the rules of international humanitarian law, given its importance in protecting human life and dignity during wars and defending the country's national interests. This came during a two-day workshop organized by the Diplomatic Institute at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs for a number of participants from the Supreme Judicial Council, in cooperation with the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC). Minister Amer noted that international humanitarian law has been violated for more than 600 days in Gaza by the Zionist war machine, and has also been violated in Yemen over the past ten years by the countries of the aggression coalition: the United States, Saudi Arabia, and the United Arab Emirates. He stressed the need to respect the rules of international humanitarian law and to avoid double standards, so that peace and stability can prevail throughout the world. The Minister of Foreign Affairs praised the existing partnership between Yemen and the International Committee of the Red Cross, reiterating his readiness to provide all necessary facilities for the work of the committee and its staff. Team from Ministry of Foreign Affairs & Red Cross visits Hodeidah Port
Hodeidah (Saba) – A team from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Expatriates and the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) visited Hodeidah Port today to inspect the damage to its vital facilities as a result of the Israeli aggression and assess the technical and logistical readiness to receive humanitarian aid and essential supplies. During the visit, the Undersecretary of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs for the International Cooperation Sector, Ambassador Ismail Al-Mutawakel, the Head of the ICRC Delegation in Yemen, Christine Shibola, and the Deputy Head of the Delegation in Hodeidah Governorate, Makram Su, listened to an explanation from the Director of the Container Terminal, Captain Mohammed Al-Sayes, about the most significant damage to the infrastructure, particularly service facilities, and the resulting operational challenges. Ambassador Al-Mutawakel explained that the visit comes within the context of strengthening partnerships with international organizations and emphasizing the full readiness of Hodeidah Port as a vital artery and humanitarian facility serving millions of Yemenis.
