Orlando Pirates news: MTN8 blow, transfer pressure builds

Orlando Pirates fans will be feeling unsettled following Abdeslam Ouaddou's comments regarding the squad's current injury status ahead of their MTN8 quarter-final clash against Polokwane City.
'It is expected that there will be some minor injuries and swelling in various players since football is played by young men,' Abdeslam Ouaddou told Isolezwe.
The coach left out the names of the individuals he was referring to, but evidently alluded to the fact that several players are expected to be out of the running for their cup clash in over two week's time.
Dutch giants PSV have upped the ante in their pursuit for Relebohile Mofokeng, reportedly tabling an offer in the region of around R100 million.
'R100 million is like a round figure. It's more than that! The amount they were negotiating for was initially R120 million,' an inside source revealed. 'You know it's not exactly what you want that you get, and that's why they are talking about the R100 million, but it's believed to be more than that.'
An big-money move seems inevitable for the Orlando Pirates superstar – however, whether it happens this offseason or next is yet to be seen. What we do know is that his father, Sechaba, wants a move to happen before this upcoming season.
'My biggest wish is to see Rele overseas in 2025/2026. I'm praying every day. I don't want to see him in the Betway Premiership again this season. I know God will answer my prayers,' Sechaba Mofokeng said.
'[Whether it's in] Spain, England, Netherlands, France, Denmark, Switzerland — Rele can play. I believe that with all my heart. Take him to Barcelona? He can play. PSG? He can play. Any country. I'll be happy — but not Saudi Arabia,' he added.
'Not yet. He's still young. He needs to compete in UEFA competitions. If he goes to Saudi now, he won't experience that. Yes, he'd be rich — but happiness is more important. You can have all the money in the world, but if you're not happy, it's worthless.'

Kaizer Chiefs delaying another announcement

The Kaizer Chiefs midfielder is no longer with Amakhosi and has reportedly already signed a new contract with a club abroad. Despite his confirmed departure behind the scenes, Kaizer Chiefs have remained publicly silent, mirroring the pattern seen with recent exits like Bongani Sam and Tebogo Potsane — both of whom left weeks before the club formally acknowledged their departures. The Venezuelan international joined Amakhosi ahead of the 2023/24 season and quickly became a fan favourite with his high work rate and ability to arrive in the box to score. Full list: Kaizer Chiefs decisions on 14 players Despite his quality, the 31-year-old missed a chunk of last season out injured. With coach Nasreddine Nabi actively searching for foreign players to become regular starters, Castillo had to make way. While there may be internal reasons for Kaizer Chiefs' timing of announcements — such as pending negotiations or legal formalities — the lack of clear communication continues to fuel speculation and confusion. Until Amakhosi breaks its silence, Castillo's departure remains unofficial in public terms — but within football circles, it's already a done deal. The MTN8 will mark the start of a chapter that could define South African football

AS Mamelodi Sundowns and Orlando Pirates resume their season-duel, Bafana Bafana stand to be the biggest benneficiary. | BackpagePix Image: Backpage The start of the domestic season this weekend is set to mark the first step of what will either be a smooth, bumpy or rollercoaster ride for football lovers in the next six months. The MTN8 will serve as the curtain raiser of the season, with the Top 8 teams from the Betway Premiership last season battling it out for the most lucrative cup competition. All eyes will be on Orlando Pirates' new coach Abdeslam Ouaddou to steer his troops to a record-extending fourth MTN8 title in a row. And should he be able to achieve that feat, he could quickly endear himself to 'The Ghost', and make them believe that he could be their messiah. Video Player is loading. Next Stay Close ✕ Pirates' fans have been yearning for someone who'll come and finally deliver them to the promised land - the Premiership title - after a 13-year drought, with no luck. Mamelodi Sundowns have been the champions of the land for the last eight years so much so that they've now set their targets on their main prize - the CAF Champions League. But such is the winning mentality of this season, they'll not only focus on dominating Africa and let the other 15 teams walk all over them in the league. No! They want to master the art of dominating across boards, especially after coming close to winning both titles last season, only to lose in the Champions League final to Pyramids. Sundowns want to grow after winning only the league title season in and season out, but they know the greatest domestic honour a team can get is being hailed as the king of the land. The Brazilians, to their advantage, also have enough depth at their disposal to compete for all trophies up for grabs, including the domestic cup competitions. So if Pirates do not only come out of the blocks in the MTN8, Sundowns will surely be ready to flex their muscles in the competition and go all the way. The MTN8 will be followed by the Carling Knockout - a competition that both Pirates and Sundowns will also want to make amends in. Since its inception two seasons ago, Pirates have never won the Carling Knockout and Sundowns lost in the final to the new kids on the blocks Magesi last season. A strong start and progression into the season from the two outfits, and others, will also augur well for Bafana Bafana as they'll have a challenging season half of the year.
