Kanwar Yatra Chaos: Delhi Lodges Over 200 Complaints Against Loud Music, Traffic Violations

News1822-07-2025
Delhi Police confirmed the complaints, primarily about noise and traffic, with some areas reporting grievances daily.
The ongoing Kanwar Yatra in Delhi has led to significant disruption, with residents from various districts filing over 200 complaints to the police about excessive noise, traffic violations, and sleepless nights.
Pilgrims traveling through South, South East, East, and South West Delhi with trucks equipped with loud sound systems have caused frustration among locals, especially in areas like New Friends Colony, Maharani Bagh, and Ashram.
Delhi Police confirmed the complaints, primarily about noise and traffic, have been coming in since Friday, with some areas reporting around 10 grievances daily, according to Hindustan Times.
Chitra Jain, president of the New Friends Colony Residents' Welfare Association, told HT that the constant noise was unbearable. 'Students trying to study are disturbed, and it's a big issue for senior citizens. The vibrations are also a nuisance," she said, while acknowledging her respect for religious sentiments but insisting the uncontrolled volume was intolerable.
Similar frustrations were voiced in Greater Kailash-II, where RWA president Sanjay Rana described late-night chaos. 'I was returning from the airport around 2.30 am during the weekend when I saw multiple trucks playing very loud music," he said, adding that pilgrims often wandered into colony lanes, worsening congestion.
In Jangpura, a resident claimed elderly family members were unable to sleep, while a Patparganj local alleged noise levels exceeded 80 decibels, calling it 'harassment" despite religious respect.
Delhi Police reiterated that law and order teams are deployed across districts, with approximately 200 officers in each shift and round-the-clock vigilance at at least 21 Kanwar camps.
Deputy Commissioner of Police (Southeast) Hemant Tiwari said the number of complaints remains consistent with previous years and authorities are trying to manage the situation. 'We have made dedicated corridors and have an average of 200 staff deployed in three shifts," he told HT.
In East Delhi, the situation is similar. Pilgrims marching along major highways and arterial roads have caused distress and health concerns among vulnerable populations. Delhi Police officials stated that over 1,000 personnel are patrolling East Delhi, addressing complaints by persuading pilgrims to lower sound system volumes and, in some cases, disconnecting wiring to enforce compliance.
East Delhi's DCP Abhishek Dhania reported fewer recent complaints but acknowledged proactive measures. 'We talk to pilgrims and ask them to lower the volume… In other cases, we also remove the wiring of the sound systems," he said.

Trump Signs Executive Order Extending Tariff Truce Deadline With China By 90 Days

The executive order was issued a day after President Trump urged China to significantly increase its purchases of US soybeans. US President Donald Trump has signed an executive order on Monday, extending the tariff truce deadline with China by 90 days, Reuters reported, citing a White House official. The order follows high-level talks between top officials from both countries, who met in Stockholm in July to explore the possibility of shifting the deadline to reach a negotiated agreement on tariffs. A White House official confirmed the latest decision, which came just hours before US tariffs on Chinese goods were due to revert to triple-digit rates. The previously agreed tariff truce between Beijing and Washington was scheduled to expire at 00:01 ET on Tuesday. The executive order, signed on Monday, was issued a day after President Trump urged China to significantly increase its purchases of US soybeans by as much as fourfold. At the same time, Washington has been pressuring Beijing to halt imports of Russian oil, with Trump warning of potential secondary tariffs on Chinese entities found violating the directive. When asked by reporters during a press conference on Monday whether he intended to extend the deadline, Trump responded, 'We'll see what happens. They've been dealing quite nicely. The relationship is very good with President Xi (Jinping) and myself." Without the order being passed, US tariffs on Chinese goods would have surged by 145%, while Chinese tariffs on American goods were set to rise to 125%. At present, imports from China into the US are subject to a 30% tariff, which includes a 10% base rate and an additional 20% imposed in relation to fentanyl-related policy measures. These rates were implemented by Washington earlier this year, between February and March. In response, China currently levies a 10% tariff on goods imported from the US. Both nations have made repeated efforts in recent months to reach a consensus on tariff policy, following the imposition of reciprocal triple-digit tariffs. In May, during a meeting in Geneva, Switzerland, the two sides agreed on a temporary truce, initiating a 90-day period for continued negotiations. They met again in Stockholm, Sweden, in late July, although no official extension was announced at the time. However, both parties described the talks as constructive, signalling the possibility of a truce extension. view comments First Published: Disclaimer: Comments reflect users' views, not News18's. Parliamentary panel urges Jal Shakti Ministry to implement National Water Policy

Agency: Last Updated: August 12, 2025, 00:15 IST Representational image (Image: News18) New Delhi, Aug 11 (PTI) A parliamentary panel has asked the Ministry of Jal Shakti to urgently implement the long-delayed new National Water Policy, warning that India's water sector is grappling with shrinking per capita availability, deteriorating quality, and low efficiency of water use systems. In its ninth report on action taken by the government on earlier recommendations, the Standing Committee on Water Resources expressed 'paramount concern" over the lack of significant progress on the policy's rollout, despite the draft being ready. '…the Committee urged the Ministry to take necessary decisions in the matter on urgent basis and ensure the implementation of the New National Water Policy on priority so that necessary systems be prepared to confront the current challenges in the Water Sector," the report said. It directed the ministry to ensure the policy is in place within three months to strengthen resilience against scarcity, pollution, and climate-induced disruptions. The committee also raised alarms over the acute staffing shortages in State Dam Safety Organisations (SDSOs), which, it said, could compromise the objectives of the Dam Safety Act, 2021. While the National Dam Safety Authority has held 16 review meetings with states to highlight vacancies, the panel found no clarity on concrete measures taken to address the issue and demanded swift remedial action. On flood management, particularly in the Northeast, the committee reviewed the Brahmaputra Board's plans to prepare and update master plans for 15 sub-basins and 14 major rivers using advanced technology. It stressed that the success of these initiatives would depend on 'rigorous implementation" and called for time-bound action to curb recurring floods and erosion in Assam and neighbouring states. The panel reiterated its recommendation for dedicated financial grants to states and UTs to promote rainwater harvesting, rejecting the ministry's stance that such funding might undermine community-led schemes like 'Jal Shakti Abhiyan: Catch the Rain' and 'Jal Sanchay Jan Bhagidari'. It also noted the absence of clear plans for the repair and maintenance of rainwater harvesting infrastructure. Swipe Left For Next Video View all Other recommendations included incorporating local MPs and MLAs in bodies under the National Mission for Clean Ganga to improve on-ground monitoring, augmenting budget allocations for the National River Conservation Plan to address pollution in non-Ganga basins, and strengthening coordination between the Jal Shakti and Environment ministries for water management in forest areas, tiger reserves, and sanctuaries. The report said that while several programmes and schemes exist, gaps in policy execution, institutional capacity, and funding continue to hinder India's water security goals. The committee has sought updates on multiple fronts within three months.
