Devers homers to help the Giants rout the Mets 12-4 for a series victory

NBC Sports3 days ago
NEW YORK (AP) — Rafael Devers snapped out of a slump with a homer and four RBIs in the San Francisco Giants' 12-4 victory over the New York Mets on Sunday.
Rookie Carson Whisenhunt (1-0) threw 5 1/3 innings for his first win in the majors to help the Giants take two of three from the Mets following a six-game losing streak.
The Mets, who began the day a half-game ahead of the Philadelphia Phillies in the NL East, have lost five of six.
Making his second career start, Whisenhunt allowed two runs — one earned — on three hits, including Francisco Lindor's first-inning homer.
Devers' three-run homer capped a four-run third against Frankie Montas (3-2). The 403-foot blast to right was just the fifth homer for Devers since he was acquired from Boston on June 15. Devers closed out a three-run fourth with a run-scoring single.
The Giants piled on in the ninth. Dominic Smith had a two-run single, and Casey Schmitt hit a three-run homer off Ryne Stanek. Backup catcher Luis Torrens got the final out.
Key moment
Devers' homer was his first since July 23, when he went deep twice against Atlanta. He was 3 of 29 in between round-trippers.
Key stat
Smith, who played for the Mets from 2017 through 2022, had five RBIs in the three-game series. He had five RBIs in his previous 25 games.
Up next
The Mets continue a six-game homestand Monday night, with LHP Sean Manaea (1-1, 2.08 ERA) set to start against Cleveland RHP Slade Cecconi (5-7, 3.77). Giants RHP Justin Verlander (1-8, 4.53) opens a three-game series at Pittsburgh.

David Bednar goes longer than expected for his 1st Yankees save to end their 5-game skid

ARLINGTON, Texas (AP) — David Bednar got his first save for the New York Yankees after going a little longer than expected, and ended their five-game losing streak before going home. Bednar got the final five outs, all on strikeouts, in their 3-2 win at Texas on Wednesday. The game-ending one came with two runners on base after manager Aaron Boone had gone to the mound with the intention of pulling the right-hander that New York acquired from Pittsburgh at the trade deadline last Thursday. 'I said, 'I'm going to take you here.' And he gave me a look like, no you're not,' Boone said. 'He absolutely wanted the ball and, you know, felt like his stuff was still there. ... What a great, gutsy effort." Bednar's 18th save overall this season came in his third appearance for the Yankees (61-54), who remained ahead of Texas for the American League's third and final wild-card spot. They have a day off before opening a three-game series against AL West-leading Houston at home on Friday night after Bednar's first two series with New York were on the road. Bednar had two strikeouts to end the eighth and two more to open the ninth before Corey Seager walked on six pitches and Marcus Semien grounded a 3-1 pitch through the right side of the infield for a single. Bednar, already at a season-high 36 pitches and with cleanup hitter Adolis García headed to the plate, initially didn't see his new manager walking toward him. 'I was just kind of getting my mind right to face García,' Bednar said. 'I told (Boone) I wanted him and, you know, he agreed. And I just wanted to bear down and get that last one.' Bednar struck out García, finishing with a season-high 42 pitches for his most since 43 in an eight-out save for the Pirates at St. Louis on June 15, 2022. It was the third time this season Bednar recorded five outs, and the second in his week with the Yankees. 'That was awesome, especially that last one,' said Paul Goldschmidt, whose pinch-hit solo homer in the seventh broke a 2-2 tie. 'To go out out there and make those pitches was huge.' ___

Translations may contain inaccuracies—please refer to the original content. Over the last few years, the New York Giants have been hard at work adding as much promising young talent to the roster as possible. Ahead of the 2025 campaign, one former coach raved about the team's latest influx of youth. It's been a busy offseason for the Giants on various fronts. While they did secure reliable veteran talent in the form of Russell Wilson and Jameis Winston, the front office remained focused on rebuilding for the future. They potentially nabbed a pair of long-term cornerstone pieces in the draft, selecting Abdul Carter and Jaxson Dart in the first round. This duo, along with multiple other rookies, joins a young Giants roster that is headlined by promising talents such as wide receiver Malik Nabers and running back Tyrone Tracy. Photo by/Getty Images Jon Gruden gives his thoughts on Giants' incoming rookie class Over the past few days, longtime NFL coach Jon Gruden has posted a series of unboxing videos from football programs across the country. Among the pro teams to send him a care package was the Giants. While unpacking his latest collection of gear, Gruden had nothing but good things to say about New York's incoming talent. "Did they have a great draft or what," Gruden said. "How about getting Abdul Carter and Jaxson Dart in the same draft. And they got my guy Cam Skattebo coming out of the backfield. They got some players man." Few boxes come with more history than this one here... it's the NEW YORK FOOTBALL GIANTS 100 years of history can be found in these red, white and blue colors and it's an honor to wear them! Thank you Coach Daboll and the @Giants for this awesome box, good luck this year!! — Jon Gruden (@BarstoolGruden) August 4, 2025 Also read: Cam Skattebo Injury Sparks NY Giants to Hunt for Free Agents After being drafted third overall earlier this year, Carter will be thrown right in the mix as a rookie. Coming off a dominant college career at Penn State, the Giants are hopeful he can be a pillar of their defense for years to come. As for Dart, New York is taking a slow approach with its newest QB prospect. He will begin the 2025 season as a backup to Wilson, who signed a one-year deal in free agency. Upon learning the game and developing behind the scenes in year one, Dart will eventually be handed the reins as the long-term option under center. Skattebo was turning heads early on in training camp for the Giants, but things have gone off the rails a bit for him. The former fourth-round pick remains absent from practice as he tends to a hamstring injury. Armed with exciting young talent on both sides of the field, New York will attempt to stay afloat in what could be a highly competitive NFC East this season.
