Devers homers to help the Giants rout the Mets 12-4 for a series victory
Rookie Carson Whisenhunt (1-0) threw 5 1/3 innings for his first win in the majors to help the Giants take two of three from the Mets following a six-game losing streak.
The Mets, who began the day a half-game ahead of the Philadelphia Phillies in the NL East, have lost five of six.
Making his second career start, Whisenhunt allowed two runs — one earned — on three hits, including Francisco Lindor's first-inning homer.
Devers' three-run homer capped a four-run third against Frankie Montas (3-2). The 403-foot blast to right was just the fifth homer for Devers since he was acquired from Boston on June 15. Devers closed out a three-run fourth with a run-scoring single.
The Giants piled on in the ninth. Dominic Smith had a two-run single, and Casey Schmitt hit a three-run homer off Ryne Stanek. Backup catcher Luis Torrens got the final out.

ARLINGTON, Texas (AP) — David Bednar got his first save for the New York Yankees after going a little longer than expected, and ended their five-game losing streak before going home. Bednar got the final five outs, all on strikeouts, in their 3-2 win at Texas on Wednesday. Bednar's 18th save overall this season came in his third appearance for the Yankees (61-54), who remained ahead of Texas for the American League's third and final wild-card spot. They have a day off before opening a three-game series against AL West-leading Houston at home on Friday night after Bednar's first two series with New York were on the road. Bednar had two strikeouts to end the eighth and two more to open the ninth before Corey Seager walked on six pitches and Marcus Semien grounded a 3-1 pitch through the right side of the infield for a single. Bednar, already at a season-high 36 pitches and with cleanup hitter Adolis García headed to the plate, initially didn't see his new manager walking toward him. 'I was just kind of getting my mind right to face García,' Bednar said. 'I told (Boone) I wanted him and, you know, he agreed. And I just wanted to bear down and get that last one.' Bednar struck out García, finishing with a season-high 42 pitches for his most since 43 in an eight-out save for the Pirates at St. Louis on June 15, 2022. It was the third time this season Bednar recorded five outs, and the second in his week with the Yankees. 'That was awesome, especially that last one,' said Paul Goldschmidt, whose pinch-hit solo homer in the seventh broke a 2-2 tie. 'To go out out there and make those pitches was huge.' ___

Coming off a dominant college career at Penn State, the Giants are hopeful he can be a pillar of their defense for years to come. As for Dart, New York is taking a slow approach with its newest QB prospect. He will begin the 2025 season as a backup to Wilson, who signed a one-year deal in free agency. Upon learning the game and developing behind the scenes in year one, Dart will eventually be handed the reins as the long-term option under center. Skattebo was turning heads early on in training camp for the Giants, but things have gone off the rails a bit for him. The former fourth-round pick remains absent from practice as he tends to a hamstring injury. Guerrero and Blue Jays rout Rockies 20-1 to cap Coors Field barrage
DENVER (AP) — Vladimir Guerrero Jr. had four hits, including a home run, and Davis Schneider went deep twice as the Toronto Blue Jays capped their Coors Field onslaught Wednesday with a 20-1 victory over the Colorado Rockies. The first-place Blue Jays finished with five homers and 24 hits to set a major league record with 63 hits in a three-game series. They established a franchise mark with 45 runs in the three-game set. Bo Bichette and Ernie Clement also homered for the AL East leaders, who outscored the Rockies 45-6 in the series and are 26-11 since June 25. Toronto hit 13 home runs in the series. Ty France had four doubles and Clement added four hits. Bichette and Schneider had four RBIs apiece. Guerrero extended his on-base streak to 23 games, the longest current streak in the American League. Toronto scored its final eight runs in the ninth inning off Colorado catcher Austin Nola, who gave up eight hits — including homers by Schneider and Clement.
