Earthquakes, mistaken identity and a 14-hour wait for a ride: Hitchhiker lifts lid on journey from Aberdeen to Hong Kong

Despite only being halfway through his journey, John Dougan has already been mistaken multiple times for a Russian-American defector, survived an earthquake and forced to wait 14 hours for his next ride.
John left the Granite City two months ago to set out on his epic hitchhiking route that will span over 14,000km and up to 25 countries – his final destination, Aberdeen, Hong Kong.
The 32-year-old recently found himself worn out and struggling with his mental health.
John was seeking a more independent life, which led him to quit his corporate job and create his social channels.
He wanted to share honest content with users, highlighting the highs and lows of his trip.
His journey across the globe has thrown up various challenges beyond the regular hurdles of hitchhiking.
John, originally from Glasgow, has been stopped multiple times at borders and mistaken American-Russian defector John Mark Dougan.
Not only do the two share the same first and last names, but they both have the same birthday.
John Mark Dougan is a former U.S. Marine who fled to Russia in 2016, accused of running websites that spread Russian propaganda.
He said: 'At the borders, they are a little bit worried we are the same person, so it became a problem
'But because Turkey is such a big country I haven't had to deal with it in a few weeks, thankfully' said John.
John Mark Dougan now follows the hitchhiker on Instagram and often likes and comments on his posts.
John spoke about the troubles he faced with getting from place to place.
He said: 'It can become quite a challenge, but it depends where you are. Cities are very difficult to get out of and its all about positioning. It becomes a bit of a skill that you pick up and you learn techniques.'
He told The Press & Journal that cultural differences have played a huge part in his journey so far, explaining that some cultures are more open to hitchhiking than others.
'You see countries through a different lens, and you get to know the people and the culture of a country much better,' John added.
However, it hasn't all been plain sailing for John.
While at the German-Austrian border, he was left waiting 14 hours for a lift as nobody stopped.
He continued: 'It was hard because it was still relatively early into the trip, and it was one of those moments where I thought, is this even going to be possible?'
While in southeastern Turkey, a 5.8 magnitude earthquake struck the area John was passing through.
At least one person has died in the quake.
John said: 'I've been in a couple of earthquakes before but when you wake up during the night and the whole building is shaking, its quite scary.'
On top of waiting for a ride and navigating an earthquake, John has also had to balance his budget.
Having travelled before, he's no stranger to the cost of seeing the world.
Money was a topic that came up in most conversations on his journey towards Hong Kong.
Many drivers have discussed inflation and how it has affected countries in Europe as well as Turkey and Albania.
He said: 'Countries that were once inexpensive to travel and live in are now almost equivalent to European prices.'
John is currently in southeastern Turkey and plans to go on to the Caucasus region, across the Caspian Sea and into Kazakhstan and China.
To follow John's journey, visit his TikTok and Instagram, where he shares the highs and lows of his trip.
He is also using the platforms to raise awareness and funds for mental health charities, another reason for his expedition.
John is hoping to reach Aberdeen, Hong Kong by October but is now hoping to extend his travels into a bigger trip around the world – minus the hitchhiking.

India's Reliance warns tariff uncertainties could hit trade flows

Aug 7 (Reuters) - Reliance Industries ( opens new tab, India's biggest buyer of Russian oil, said in its annual report on Thursday that geopolitical and tariff-related uncertainties could hurt trade flows and the demand-supply balance. The operator of the world's largest refining complex said crude prices remained volatile amid evolving sanctions, shifting tariff policies, and output decisions by the Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries and non-OPEC members. The report, which did not elaborate on the tariffs, covered the fiscal year to March 2025, before U.S. President Donald Trump ratcheted up pressure on India, imposing on Wednesday an additional 25% tariff on goods imported from the country over its energy ties with Russia. The new levy, aimed at penalising India for its Russian oil imports, is on top of existing tariffs Washington has levied to fix its trade deficit with New Delhi. Russia continued to be the largest oil supplier to India during the first six months of 2025, accounting for about 35% of New Delhi's overall supplies, followed by Iraq, Saudi Arabia, and the United Arab Emirates, trade data shows. While state refiners have paused imports of Russian oil, private companies Reliance, Nayara Energy, and HPCL Mittal Energy continue to buy it. Late last year, Russia's state oil firm Rosneft ( opens new tab agreed to supply nearly 500,000 barrels per day of crude to Reliance in the biggest ever energy deal between the two countries. "If we cave under pressure, we risk losing access to cheaper Russian crude, which could squeeze refining margins. That's a risk for Reliance and oil marketing companies," Pramod Gubbi, co-founder at portfolio manager Marcellus Investment Managers, said referring to additional U.S. tariffs. Reliance shares fell 1% on Thursday before trimming losses to close 0.2% down. Shares of oil marketing companies including Indian Oil Corp ( opens new tab closed between 0.4% and 2% lower. The European Union has also banned imports of refined petroleum products made from Russian crude processed in third countries, with exceptions for a few Western nations. It has imposed direct sanctions on Russian-backed private refiner Nayara Energy. Reliance, a major exporter of refined products, shipped an average of 2.83 million barrels of diesel and 1.5 million barrels of jet fuel per month to Europe in the first seven months of this year, according to LSEG shiptracking data.

Apple CEO Tim Cook gives Donald Trump enormous block of gold in weird Oval Office love-in

Tim Cook, whom Donald Trump once referred to as "Tim Apple", handed the US President a large glass desk ornament with a 24 karat gold base as he bid to avoid his wrath with manufacturing investment Apple CEO Tim Cook gave Donald Trump a large block of gold last night in a bizarre Oval Office love-in. ‌ The iPhone boss is the latest in a string of tech CEOs to lay it on thick for the "transactional" President, hoping to keep him sweet and avoid his wrath. ‌ The tech boss stood alongside Trump in the Oval and announced Apple would increase investment in US manufacturing by $100m over the next four years. ‌ It comes after Donald Trump made an unfortunate arm gesture during a tour of the White House roof. READ MORE: What Ghislaine Maxwell said about Donald Trump in 9-hour prison interview READ MORE: MIKEY SMITH: 10 unhinged Donald Trump moments as White House prepares for mystery 'announcement' After they spoke, Cook - whom Trump once referred to as "Tim Apple" - gave the President a desk ornament made from glass manufactured in a Kentucky factory they plan to use for iPhone parts - with a huge base made of 24 carat gold. ‌ Although Trump appeared much more enthusiastic about a plastic miniature model of a new kind of stealth bomber he'd been given earlier in the day. It came after Trump criticised Apple and Cook for efforts to shift iPhone production to India to avoid the tariffs his Republican administration had planned for China. While in Qatar earlier this year, Trump said there was 'a little problem' with the Cupertino, California, company and recalled a conversation with Cook in which he said he told the CEO, 'I don't want you building in India.' ‌ India has incurred Trump's wrath, as the president signed an order Wednesday to put an additional 25% tariff on the world 's most populous country for its use of Russian oil. The new import taxes to be imposed in 21 days could put the combined tariffs on Indian goods at 50%. "This is a significant step toward the ultimate goal of ensuring that iPhones sold in the United States of America also are made in America," Trump said at the press conference. 'Today's announcement is one of the largest commitments in what has become among the greatest investment booms in our nation's history." ‌ As part of the Apple announcement, the investments will be about bringing more of its supply chain and advanced manufacturing to the United States as part of an initiative called the American Manufacturing Program, but it is not a full commitment to build its popular iPhone device domestically. 'This includes new and expanded work with 10 companies across America. They produce components — semiconductor chips included — that are used in Apple products sold all over the world, and we're grateful to the President for his support,' Cook said in a statement announcing the investment. The new manufacturing partners include Corning, Coherent, Applied Materials, Texas Instruments and Broadcom among others. ‌ Apple had previously said it intended to invest $500 billion domestically, a figure it will now increase to $600 billion. Trump in recent months has criticized the tech company and Cook for efforts to shift iPhone production to India to avoid the tariffs his Republican administration had planned for China. Apple's new pledge comes just a few weeks after it forged a $500 million deal with MP Materials, which runs the only rare earths producer in the country. That agreement will enable MP Materials to expand a factory in Texas to use recycled materials to produce magnets that make iPhones vibrate. Speaking on a recent investors call, Cook emphasized that 'there's a load of different things done in the United States.' As examples, he cited some of the iPhone components made in the U.S. such as the device's glass display and module for identifying people's faces and then indicated the company was gearing to expand its productions of other components in its home country. ‌ 'We're doing more in this country, and that's on top of having roughly 19 billion chips coming out of the US now, and we will do more,' Cook told analysts last week, without elaborating. News of Apple's latest investment in the U.S. caused the company's stock price to surge by 5% in Wednesday's midday trading. That gain reflects investors' relief that Cook 'is extending an olive branch' to the Trump administration, said Nancy Tengler, CEO of money manager Laffer Tengler Investments, which owns Apple stock. Despite Wednesday's upturn, Apple's shares are still down by 15% this year, a reversal of fortune that has also been driven by the company's botched start in the pivotal field of artificial intelligence.

Stacey Solomon's career so far Stacey Solomon has been a familiar face on viewers' screens for over a decade. Let's take a look back at her career. The X Factor (2009): Stacey competed in series six of long-running ITV singing competition The X Factor. During her time in the show, she was mentored by Danni Minogue in the 'Girls' category. The star finished in third place, behind Joe McElderry and Olly Murs. I'm A Celebrity Get Me Out Of Here (2010); In late 2010, Stacey headed to the infamous I'm A Celeb Aussie jungle. After 21 days, she triumphed to win the tenth series. It was through I'm A Celeb that she met future husband Joe Swash - who'd won two years earlier and was hosting the ITV2 spinoff. Celebrity Juice (2011―2013, 2016―2019): The star appeared as a panellist on 21 episodes of the comedy panel game show hosted by Keith Lemon. Stacey was a regular in the 21st series, broadcast in 2019. Loose Women (2016 - present): Stacey has been a permanent panel member of the daytime show since 2016. She previously made guest appearances in 2011 and 2012. Sort Your Life Out (2022 -present): This BBC show sees Stacey, with the help of an expert team, transform participants' living spaces after removing clutter. One posted: "Ah have the best time! You deserve it!! Lots of love." A second put: "Aww great family pics love," as a third gushed: "Have the best time." Stacey's dad was quick to capture the hotel in full glory, with huge outdoor dining spaces and sun loungers. The venue sits perched on a beach with crystal clear sands and an idyllic pier. Back in 2023, Stacey also visited the same venue and was again called out by some for "flaunting her wealth." Sadly, Stacey is often subject to mum shaming comments on social media. Previously, she was even called out for her daughter Belle's outfits. 6 The resort costs £30K a week for the family Credit: Instagram 6 The family pulled funny faces in another picture Credit: Instagram
