Safety inspection of Bengaluru Metro Yellow Line starts today

Time of India5 days ago
Bengaluru: The safety inspection of the Yellow Line by the Commissioner of Metro Railway Safety (CMRS) will begin Tuesday, and is expected to continue for four days. CMRS inspection is a statutory requirement, and the line can be opened to the public only after receiving the necessary approval.
Bengalureans have long been awaiting the opening of the 18.8km line from RV Road to Bommasandra, which connects Electronics City — one of the city's major IT corridors. Due to the non-availability of the required number of coaches, BMRCL postponed the launch several times. Recently, BMRCL management set Aug 15 as the new deadline to open the line.
A senior BMRCL official said CMRS of the southern region, AM Chowdhary, and his team will inspect the line starting Tuesday. "As this is a new line, the inspection may go on for four days. CMRS inspection is a crucial step towards opening the line. We'll announce the opening date based on the outcome of the safety inspection."

So far, BMRCL received only three sets of trains. The fourth set is expected to arrive in Aug. Earlier, BMRCL considered opening the line with five-seven stations, but further clarity will come only after the CMRS inspection.

Preferring Bengaluru footpaths like steak: ‘rare', not ‘well-done'!

What is that striking feature in our state capital Bengaluru which is conspicuous by its absence? In fact, its absence holds potential to attract global tourism – albeit with a statutory warning for the tourists: 'Come and experience it at your own risk!' Namma Bengaluru may have had a slew of sobriquets to describe the city nationally and globally, but the latest one – and the most apt – that deserves to stick now is: 'City Without Footpaths'. The irony is that the 'Pensioner's Paradise', which Bengaluru used to be once, has today emerged as the biggest threat for pensioners and elders, because there are no footpaths for them to walk safely on. And the average modern Bengalureans – although constantly cursing under the breath for being presented with a city without footpaths to live in – seem to have accepted their fate, and absorbed the culture of a 'foothpathless' city in their DNA. That probably explains why even in public spaces with the seemingly miraculous presence of a good footpath, Bengalureans still walk on the road, risking their lives with vehicles zooming past, rather than take refuge on the footpath – as if they are robotically programmed to do so. This 'robotic programming' can be explained. For a city with 1,672 Km of total road length, a pathetically meagre 3 Km is estimated to have proper footpaths on both sides of the road. The word 'proper' in this context means a footpath that is safe to walk on for all age groups of people. But there seems to be a subconscious assumption that the very few footpaths that exist in the city are not meant to be stepped on. It is probably the value of its rarity that instilled a high degree of respect among the people (anything that is rare has higher value, right?), and setting one's foot on something that is highly respected is a strict 'no'! That is probably why those very rare existing well-laid footpaths are viewed with awe and wonder rather than be used for what they are meant for. The value of a footpath in Bengaluru, therefore, is justified by its existential rarity. Let pedestrian safety be thrown to the winds!

Bengaluru: Namma Metro Yellow Line Set For August Debut, What To Expect?

Last Updated: With 16 stations and big ridership hopes, Namma Metro's Yellow Line aims to change how Bengaluru moves. The much-awaited 19.15-km-long Yellow Line of Namma Metro is likely to open by August 2025, bringing some much-needed relief to Bengaluru's busy roads. The route connects RV Road to Bommasandra with 16 stations in total. Officials are aiming to open all 16 stations at once, though they may begin with just seven key stops depending on readiness. How Many Trains Will Run Initially? At launch, only three trains will operate on the line. These will run from 5 am to 11 pm, with a train available every 20–25 minutes, completing 30–40 round trips per day. Each end-to-end trip will take roughly 80 minutes. As per Times Now News, if only seven stations are opened, the frequency may increase to handle passenger load more efficiently. What Are the Ridership and Revenue Expectations? Despite the soft launch, authorities expect a promising start. Daily ridership is projected to be around 25,000 in the beginning, with daily earnings estimated between Rs 10–15 lakh. Once all 15 trains are operational by next year, ridership could jump to 2 lakh per day, generating nearly Rs 60 lakh in revenue. To manage the crowd, only select entrances at some stations might open initially. Meanwhile, full staff, security, and operational teams will be on duty from day one. A fourth train is expected by August 10, but it requires two weeks of testing. If it arrives after the line opens, testing will be done at night, possibly causing delays. What's Next? The CMRS (Commissioner of Metro Railway Safety) began inspecting the Yellow Line earlier this week. Their report is due within days. Once BMRCL clears all safety checks, the final green signal will be given to kick-start services. view comments First Published: Disclaimer: Comments reflect users' views, not News18's.
