‘Weapons' spins small town into chaos that mirrors real life, humor and all
The film follows Cregger's 2022 solo directorial debut ' Barbarians,' the widely celebrated genre-bending horror. This time, the young director bends even more, spinning a town into chaos when all children but one from the same classroom mysteriously vanish, leaving a trail of questions in their place.
The Warner Bros. release hits theaters Friday and is as creepy as it is hilarious — a delicate balance that required Cregger to strip any intentionality behind his humor, he told The Associated Press.
'If the humor is coming from an authentic reaction that a character's having, then it works,' Cregger said. 'There's a lot of jokes that didn't make it into the movie that I thought were going to be so funny. And then we did a test screening, and nobody laughed and I'm like, OK, it's gotta go.'
Paranoia runs deep in the film. The town's heartbroken parents are represented by Josh Brolin's character, Archer, whose son was among the missing. The students' teacher, played by Julia Garner, is determined to solve the mystery, despite parents blaming her for the disappearances.
The humor here comes naturally, Cregger said, as characters navigate the absurd events happening around them.
'You're not playing for the laugh, otherwise you lose the laugh,' said Brolin, whose character stumbles through his grief, a state ripe for what he called genuine and 'embarrassingly funny' moments.
Maybrook's unrest puts a mirror up to society
If 17 kids up and ran out of their homes at 2:17 a.m. one morning with no trace, what would a community do? That question drove 'Weapons,' painting a picture of a town left reeling by the mystery.
The film setting — the fictional small town of Maybrook, Illinois — is just as integral to the plot as any of its main characters. The town feels hyper realistic, a core tenet to the movie's ability to blend humor and horror, two genres that Garner said are 'opposite side of the same coin.'
'It's funny because this isn't even like a proper horror film,' Garner said. 'It has comedic elements and has horror elements, but it's kind of its own genre, in a way.'
The town's reactions to tragedy and shock was intentionally meant to feel oddly realistic, Cregger said. Parents are outraged, storming into town halls and angrily demanding answers from the police, the school and, most pointedly, the students' teacher. Yet, when Garner's character is attacked in broad daylight, bystanders and store owners hardly bat an eye, a level of indifference that Cregger said is just as realistic as the parental outrage.
'We definitely have a, 'Whoa, not my problem,' kind of a thing when chaos is occurring, because we see it so much on TV that I think we're able to just kind of tune it out, even when it's happening in front of us,' Cregger said. 'Living in America, I've seen crazy things happen with my own eyes right in front of me, and I've just kept walking for better or worse, so I don't know, it feels real.'
'Weapons' relies on imperfect characters
Brolin — who's found wide-reaching success across Hollywood, from the 1985 classic, 'The Goonies,' to the Marvel universe — initially hesitated when approached for the film. As a father of four, facing his worst nightmare — losing his children — was 'not something I want to show up to work for,' he said.
But 'Weapons' lends the characters a layer of depth that allowed horror, a genre he said is typically treated as cosmetic, to suddenly have 'depth, and humor and absurdity,' which, coupled with his own adult daughter's love of 'Barbarian,' was enough to convince him to sign on.
The movie subtly mocks suburban life, as goriness and horror occur under the sights of nosy neighbors, corrupt police departments and struggling relationships.
Each character that drives the plot forward is just as flawed as they are victims of tragedy. Gandy, the schoolteacher, is harassed by parents for her missing students, but is secretly battling alcoholism. Archer, the heartbroken father, is failing in his job and his marriage as he navigates his son's absence. Paul Morgan, played by Alden Ehrenreich, is a local beat police officer with secrets of his own.
'Every character is perceived in a certain way and then every character breaks,' Brolin said. 'It all comes down to this very base thing: What if you lost the thing that you value the most? How do you deal?'
For Ehrenreich, who's found success in dramas, notably as a young Han Solo, 'Weapons' offered a different pace, but its horror wasn't what drew him in. Rather, he was captivated by the film's depth and weirdness.
'The weird resonance, the weird opening voice-over, the way it was written and the kind of emotional brokenness of these characters and the depth that I felt was in the writing, that was as deep as any drama I've read in years,' Ehrenreich said.

Khamzat Chimaev issues five-word response to White House fight speculation
Khamzat Chimaev has played down the idea that he could fight at a potential UFC event at the White House, making a self-deprecating joke about his chances. US president Donald Trump recently said he would like to stage a UFC fight card at the White House in 2026, to celebrate the 250th anniversary of his country. That led to a number of top stars expressing their desire to be involved, including Conor McGregor, who has not fought since 2021, and a man seen by some fans as the greatest fighter of all time: Jon Jones, who said he could reverse his recent retirement to compete at the White House. Yet Russian star Chimaev did not exactly throw his own name in the hat, when asked about the prospect on Wednesday (6 August). 'Bro, look at my face,' Chimaev told MMA Junkie playfully. He added: 'I don't think they would let me come or whatever.' Chimaev, 31, is widely considered one of the scariest talents in the UFC, and after suffering from injury and illness in recent years, he will finally challenge for a title on 16 August. The 'Wolf' will face middleweight champion Dricus Du Plessis in the main event of UFC 319 in Chicago, and he hinted that Trump might have helped him to get a Visa. The unbeaten Chimaev last fought in the US in 2022, and his two fights since then have taken place in Abu Dhabi. Rumours long circulated that the Russian was unable to travel to the US, and he said on Wednesday: 'This wasn't my bad, wasn't my fault. 'Everyone knows I didn't have a Visa to the US, that's why I didn't fight [there]. So now, Donald Trump, he heard, so we go for a fight.' Trump is close friends with UFC president Dana White, who said he is eager to bring a potential White House fight card to life.

Chris Pratt could be 'dragged into Katy Perry's legal battle' after he rented the $15M mansion she 'forced' dying war veteran, 85, to leave
Chris Pratt could reportedly be dragged into a brutal legal battle between Katy Perry and a dying war veteran who claims he was forced to surrender his mansion to her. Ailing Carl Westcott, 85, agreed to sell his home to the singer in 2020 for $11.25million, but days later tried to nix the deal claiming he was under the influence of painkillers when he signed. Guardians of the Galaxy star Chris and his wife Katherine Schwarzenegger went on to rent the 8-bed, 7.5-bath property from Katy. Katy is now suing the ailing man - who receives 24/7 care in a hospice - for $6 million to cover back rent and alleged damages. A court ruled the contract was legit and late last year Katy was declared the legal owner of the gated 1930s estate. In an update this week, a source claimed to The Sun that Chris is 'likely to be served a subpoena as he is a witness.' The source added: 'For example, to establish when he started renting? He is living in a property that is wrapped up in a legal battle. 'Katy has already been mandated to do so.' They said Carl's legal team want to know how much rent he is being charged and added: 'Perry has claimed millions of dollars in damages, and claimed that it's not liveable - it's clearly liveable because an A-list actor is renting it.' Daily Mail has contacted representatives for Katy Perry and Chris Pratt. Carl and his family have been embroiled in a years-long legal battle with Katy over the Montecito mansion and will soon get their day in court with the singer and now want to face off with Orlando Bloom too. Chart Westcott, the Attorney-in-Fact for his ailing father Carl, told the Daily Mail that his family will continue to fight after a Los Angeles judge excused the actor from taking the witness stand during last Friday's hearing. 'Although the judge didn't rule in our favor, we will still fight back to get Orlando to testify as we know he is intrinsically involved,' Chart, 40, insisted. Orlando, 48, who split from Katy earlier this year, was dragged into the case last fall after being served a subpoena and was named in the joint witness list, which was filed on July 28. Katy's legal team has been fighting for her ex-fiancé to not have to take the stand, even though Carl's team has argued that the A-listers are both 'key eyewitnesses with personal knowledge as to the scope of work, construction plans, and construction costs.' The judge, according to a Daily Mail reporter who attended the hearing, said that he only needed the testimony of the contractors themselves and added: 'Why do we need Mr. Bloom to (give testimony), other than making this a celebrity circus?' Katy, for her part, was ordered to appear in person at the six-day non-jury trial, which is set to begin on August 21 in Los Angeles, and the judge stated that he will limit the time of her testimony and cross examination to 'no more than two hours.' It is unclear on which date the popstar will make an appearance, given she's in the midst of her Lifetimes Tour. However, the Daily Mail confirmed that she will testify. 'Katy having to appear in court is a win for us since we can face her in the eyes and she can see the monstrous effect she's had on our family,' Chart said. 'She can't use celebrity privilege in this case and will have to show up like any normal person. We are prepared to face her at trial.' In 2020, after purchasing the house two months earlier, Carl had agreed to sell his 9,000 sq. ft. home sitting on a 2.5-acre lot to Katy for $15 million, but days later tried to nix the deal claiming he was under the influence of painkillers when he signed. A court ruled in Katy's favor in 2023, finding that the contract was legitimate, and the Dark Horse singer was declared the legal owner of the gated 1930s eight-bedroom estate which also boasts a tennis court, two guesthouses and a pool. The judge said Carl presented no credible or persuasive evidence that he lacked capacity to enter into a real estate contract between June 10 and June 18, 2020, the days during which he negotiated and signed the contract. The judge also said the court found significant evidence that demonstrated Carl was well enough to knowingly sign on the dotted line stating the entrepreneur to be 'coherent, engaged, lucid, and rational.' The house, which the popstar took possession of in May 2024, was purchased under the LLC, DDoveB (named after Daisy Dove Bloom), which was registered by Orlando along with business managers Richard Feldstein and Mabel Tash. It's now being rented out by fellow A-listers Chris Pratt and his wife Katherine Schwarzenegger as they build their new home. The ongoing court battle is over Katy wanting to knock $6 million off the price for alleged damages to the home - she has only paid $9 million of the $15 million price in escrow - citing structural defects, deferred maintenance, and lost rental income. She has claimed that she is entitled to $3.25 million in damages for 'loss of use' for the time that Carl would not turn over possession of the home, under the contract, and also wants $2.29 million in new alleged repair damages (bringing the total to $5.4 million - close to the $6 million she owes). The Westcott family has denied the damages to the Daily Mail and called the claims 'spurious and egregious' - while a source close to Katy argued that the 'recovery of costs is perfectly normal in civil litigation.' Chart, a Dallas-based private investor, previously called the lawsuit 'shocking' since he believed the songstress could just 'let the old man go on his way.' 'It's entitled celebrity behavior,' he told The U.S. Sun in February. 'She has no sense of fair play, no empathy, zero empathy, quite the opposite.' According to a July court document filed by Carl's attorney, he argued that 'Perry's counsel flatly refused in a series of approximately half a dozen meet and confer emails to even disclose if repairs had been done and also flatly refused to stipulate to any reinspection of the house or to the deposition of anyone in Perry's control, including Perry, her boyfriend Bloom who at inspections had stated he would be in charge of repairs, [Bernie] Gudvi (Perry's business manager), or the two contractors who at their depositions testified they were general contractors, but produced zero contracts for the work covered by their summary estimates.' So far, 16 contractors who allegedly worked on repairs were all served with deposition subpoenas that contained extensive Requests for Production of Documents, and are listed on the witness list. Katy will be examined on 'all aspects of her damages claims for loss of use and repairs,' and questioned about her claim of needing to rent another house, and 'her rental of the house to Chris Pratt or anyone else,' according to the joint trial witness list (which can be modified prior to the trial starting). As the parties continue to battle it out, Carl remains bedridden and continues to receive hospice care for Huntington's disease. Chart, whose brother Court is married to Real Housewives of Dallas alum Kameron Westcott, told the Daily Mail that he's 'still very ill' and 'he's just wasting away.' 'For this to be the last thing, the last sort of business transaction that he's even aware of is horrible and sad,' he said.
