Toronto Blue Jays drum up much betting interest
Toronto entered its game Wednesday versus the Baltimore Orioles having lost four straight. But last week the Jays went 5-2 to extend their lead atop the American League East Division standings.
Toronto took two of three games against the New York Yankees before winning three of four versus the Detroit Tigers. On Saturday, the Jays clinched the series with the Tigers with a 6-1 victory.

According to the Ontario Lottery and Gaming Corp., a solid 81 per cent of bettors successfully backed the Jays' victory. Forty-eight per cent had the Toronto runline at +1.5, with 17 per cent selected the under at 7.5.

Detroit avoided the series sweep Sunday with a 10-4 victory. But just 27 per cent of Proline players backed the Tigers' victory while 23 per cent took the visitors' -1.5 runline. However, 89 per cent did take the over at 8.5.
Meanwhile in the CFL, the Toronto Argonauts earned their first home win of the season Saturday with a 31-17 victory over the Winnipeg Blue Bombers. Fifty-eight per cent of bettors backed the Argos' victory while 66 per cent had the club's spread at +4.5.
However, just 27 per cent had the under at 50.5.
On Sunday, the Hamilton Tiger-Cats downed the B.C. Lions 37-33. Sixty-eight per cent of Proline players backed the Ticats' win while 57 per cent had the +3.5 point spread.
Fifty-four per cent correctly took the over at 56.5.

Jen Pawol has made history as the first female umpire to work a regular-season game in the major leagues. Pawol's much-anticipated debut came as the first base umpire for Saturday's first game of a split doubleheader between the Atlanta Braves and Miami Marlins. She enjoyed a quiet first inning, watching as Braves right-hander Hurston Waldrep struck out the first two batters before Agustin Ramirez lined out to third baseman Nacho Alvarez. The Braves also were set down in order by Miami right-hander Ryan Gusto in the bottom of the first inning, with no calls from Pawol needed at first base. As the first base umpire, Pawol's responsibility was to check Waldrep's hands for foreign substances following the inning. During that brief encounter she also appeared to receive a warm greeting from Braves catcher Sean Murphy on his way to the dugout. Pawol couldn't help but notice her debut was being watched closely. Fans responded with a warm ovation when the video board focused on the umpire between innings, forcing her to take a quick glance at her image. Pawol will work third base in Saturday night's second game of the doubleheader. She will be in the spotlight when she calls pitches behind the plate in Sunday's final game of the series. 'It was super emotional to finally be living that phone call that I'd been hoping for and working towards for quite a while, and I just felt super full — I feel like a fully charged battery ready to go,' Pawol said. She was assigned the Triple-A championship game in 2023 and worked spring training games in 2024 and again this year. Pawol was a three-time all-conference softball selection pick at Hofstra. She worked as an NCAA softball umpire from 2010-16. Pawol's rise to make MLB history came 28 years after the NBA gender barrier for game officials was broken and 10 years after the NFL hired its first full-time female official. The men's soccer World Cup first hired a female referee three years ago. The NHL has not had any women as on-ice officials.

Midfielder Malik Henry earns promotion, signs first-team contract with Toronto FC
TORONTO – Toronto FC has signed Canadian midfielder Malik Henry to a first team-contract through 2025 with club options for 2026 and 2027. The 23-year-old from Hamilton has already made two appearances for the first team, signing three short-term agreements and making his MLS debut against New York Red Bulls on June 25. 'We are happy to promote Malik to the first team for the remainder of the 2025 season,' Toronto GM Jason Hernandez said in a statement. 'He has been a top performer for our MLS Next Pro team this season and continues to grow with each opportunity given in our senior team environment. We look forward to his continued work and growth within our system.' Henry signed with Toronto FC II on March 4 and leads the reserve team with five assists in 18 appearances, including 12 starts, during the 2025 MLS Next Pro regular season. Henry was selected in the second round (39th overall) by CF Montréal in the 2024 MLS SuperDraft after a collegiate career split between the University of North Carolina (2020) and University of Akron (2021-2024). Prior to his NCAA career, he spent three years in the Toronto FC academy, playing across the U-15, U-16, and U-17 age groups, after playing youth soccer with Hamilton United. Henry has represented Canada at the under-15 level. The signing announcement was made prior to Toronto's game at the Philadelphia Union on Saturday.
