In a first, President Murmu sanctions grant for Eklavya school toppers
Officials told The Hindu that the NESTS had disbursed ₹62.40 lakh of this discretionary fund to 823 meritorious students who have secured the highest marks in their respective streams across Eklavya schools in the country.
The NESTS, under Ministry of Tribal Affairs, administers over 470 Eklavya schools across the country. Over 1.38 lakh students are enrolled in these schools with at least 85% of them from Scheduled Tribe communities.
One official explained that this initiative provided a one-time financial assistance of ₹7,500 each to two top-performing students from each stream — Science, Humanities, and Commerce — in every school that has had students appear for the Class XII board examinations for the academic year ending in 2025.
The discretionary fund was sanctioned to NESTS earlier this year, which was transferred through direct bank transfer to the students' account set up by their respective schools within 2-3 weeks of the results being announced, officials said.
They added that the selection of meritorious students for receiving this grant had a tie-breaker mechanism as well which had worked in a preference for girl students and was used in one instance where 20 students from 10 EMRSs had secured the same marks. If the tie persisted, Class XI performance would be considered.
A statement from the Ministry of Tribal Affairs on Monday said that the initiative 'underscores the shared vision of the Hon'ble President of India and NESTS to foster equitable access to quality education, incentivise scholastic achievement, and empower tribal youth to confidently pursue higher education and professional aspirations'.
The EMRS programme to run residential schools for tribal children is among the main schemes implemented by the Tribal Affairs Ministry at the Centre and has been a key plank for the current administration to highlight its commitment to reaching Scheduled Tribe communities.
The scheme, in existence since 1997-98, has seen major reforms beginning in the first term of Prime Minister Narendra Modi's government, which included sanctioning over 600 new Eklavya schools across the country, and setting up the NESTS as a central administrator of the schools.

‘Was tortured a lot': Sadhvi Pragya says she was ‘forced to name PM Modi, Yogi Adityanath' in Malegaon blast case
Acquitted in the 2008 Malegaon blast case, former BJP MP Sadhvi Pragya said she was "forced to name" Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath in the case. She claimed she was 'tortured a lot' for not doing so. "Yes, I was forced. I didn't succumb to pressure and didn't take anyone's name, didn't falsely implicate I was tortured a lot," she said on Sunday. Sadhvi Pragya Thakur earlier said she has submitted in writing whose names she was coerced into taking during a probe into the Malegaon blast case. Her remarks came days after she, along with six others, was acquitted by a special NIA court in the case. Sadhvi Pragya Thaku said that the court's verdict in the Malegaon case signified the victory of "Bhagawa, Sanatana aur Rashtra". "Bhagawa, Sanatana aur Rashtra ki vijay hui hai. I had to face a lot of difficulties, but I will keep doing everything possible for the country in future," she was quoted as saying by news agency ANI. In her latest comment to the media, Sadhvi Pragya said, '...Bhagwa aatankwaad kehne waalon ke munh kaale huye hain. Society and the country have given them a solid reply. ' 'The court's decision is crystal clear. This is a slap on the faces of those who called it 'saffron terror'...They called it 'saffron terror' and 'Hindu terror' earlier too. Maharashtra's Chavan (Prithviraj Chavan) has spoken on 'sanatana aatankwaad', 'Hindutva aatankwaad'. They are people of the same category. They are all members of Congress,' she added. She said the truth has triumphed.

PM Modi to inaugurate Bengaluru metro Yellow Line, launch Phase-3 expansion on August 10
Prime Minister Narendra Modi will inaugurate the much-awaited 19.15-km Yellow Line of Namma Metro, connecting RV Road to Bommasandra, and lay the foundation stone for the 44.65-km Phase-3 expansion of the Bengaluru Metro on August 10. The Yellow Line, built at a cost of Rs 5,056.99 crore, features 16 stations and is expected to significantly ease traffic congestion, especially at the infamously congested Silk Board Junction. The line is estimated to cater to nearly eight lakh commuters daily, offering major connectivity between key residential and industrial corridors in southern Bengaluru and Electronic City respectively. In addition, the Prime Minister will launch the Rs 15,611-crore Phase-3 expansion, which was approved by the Union Cabinet within the first 100 days of Modi 3.0. The Bengaluru Metro's Phase 3, also known as the Orange Line, is a project to expand the city's metro network by adding 44.65 km of new lines. The project includes two lines and 31 stations, with an estimated completion date by the end of 2029. Phase 3 will primarily serve underserved areas along Magadi Road and the western portion of the Outer Ring Road (ORR). The two lines will connect JP Nagar 4th Phase to Kempapura (Hebbal) and Hosahalli to Kadabagere, with a portion also passing through Gorguntepalya, Magadi Road, and Mysuru Road. A significant part of the project will involve a double-decker viaduct, where metro tracks will be built above existing roads and flyovers to optimize space Union Minister for Home and Urban Affairs Manohar Lal Khattar said, 'I am pleased to announce that the Hon'ble Prime Minister of India has kindly agreed to inaugurate the Yellow Line and lay the foundation stone for Phase-3 on August 10.' Calling the occasion a 'landmark moment for Bengaluru South,' local MP Tejasvi Surya expressed gratitude to the Prime Minister for prioritising public transport in the region. 'With nearly Rs 20,000 crore worth of Metro infrastructure dedicated to this region alone, we are incredibly grateful to PM Modi for his continued focus, affection, and commitment to Bengaluru South's public transport infrastructure,' he said. Together, the Yellow Line and Phase-3 projects are expected to benefit nearly 25 lakh commuters in the southern part of the city, enhancing overall urban mobility in Bengaluru. On August 1, the Commissioner of Metro Railway Safety (CMRS) gave the safety clearance to BMRCL's Yellow Line, clearing the way for commercial operations on the stretch. This development came nearly eight years after the civil works for the Yellow Line were awarded in 2017. BMRCL currently has three trains in its Hebbagodi depot for the Yellow Line with the fourth train set on its way to Bengaluru. The Yellow Line has suffered significant delays, primarily due to disruptions in the supply of metro coaches. CRRC, the Chinese firm originally contracted to supply the rolling stock, failed to meet the 75 per cent local manufacturing requirement mandated by the 'Make in India' policy. The issue was exacerbated by the India-China border standoff in June 2020, complications with foreign direct investment (FDI) norms, and Covid-related disruptions. To resolve the impasse, CRRC partnered with Bengal-based Titagarh Rail Systems to manufacture and deliver the coaches domestically. However, visa delays for Chinese engineers and the late arrival of propulsion systems from Japan further slowed down testing and commissioning of the corridor.
