Addressing the enthusiastic young athletes, coaches, and staff, Khadse said, 'Under 'Khelo Bharat Niti 2025', we are building an ecosystem that not only discovers talent but also sustains it through world-class coaching and community engagement. I have realised when women lift, the entire nation rises, and we pledge to leave no talent undiscovered and no aspiration unfulfilled.'
Khadse's visit highlighted the pivotal role of these academies in identifying and nurturing talent from the grassroots, equipping them with world-class facilities and expert guidance. Such institutions are crucial to realising the ambitious goals of 'Khelo Bharat Niti 2025,' a visionary policy aimed at transforming India into a formidable global sporting powerhouse by creating a comprehensive and sustainable sports development framework.
The presence of an iconic athlete like Chanu at the academy serves as a potent motivator for the young trainees, vividly demonstrating the heights that can be achieved through dedicated training and access to the premier facilities provided by the Khelo India initiative. Seville storms past Lyles for Lausanne 100m win

Jamaica's Oblique Seville trumped Olympic champion Noah Lyles in the 100m at Wednesday's Diamond League meet in Lausanne, just three weeks away from the world championships in Tokyo. HT Image Once again, Lyles stuttered out of the blocks, a slow start handing Seville the advantage from the start, something the Jamaican then never looked in danger of ceding. Seville clocked an impressive 9.87 seconds in torrential rain at the Stade de la Pontaise, Lyles battling back in a strong finish to snatch second in 10.02sec. It was a repeat of last month's London Diamond League when Seville also got the better of the American. Kenya's Olympic 800m champion Emmanuel Wanyonyi also suffered a setback as American Josh Hoey claimed victory in the 800m. Hoey, the reigning world indoor champion, held his own down the home straight for victory in 1:42.82. "I wanted to get out hard, let the leaders take the rain, and then make my move with 100 to go," said Hoey. "It felt like being a kid again, playing in the rain. I've never raced in anything like this before. It reminded me of cross-country growing up, where it comes down to being the toughest and the most patient." Wanyonyi looked out of it with 200m to run, but battled back for second in 1:43.29 ahead of Spain's Mohamed Attaoui and Briton Max Burgin, with Canadian world champion Marco Arop in fifth. But there was no such drama for Britain's Olympic women's 800m gold medallist Keely Hodgkinson, who continued her comeback with a meet record over the two-lap discipline in 1:55.69 ahead of Switzerland's Audrey Werro. "When the pace goes like that, you just forget about everyone else," said Hodgkinson, who returned to the track last week in Silesia after 12 months out with hamstring problems since winning at the Paris Games. "And it paid off with a solid performance. I couldn't have asked for a better start this season." Cordell Tinch continued his fine season form by clocking an impressive 12.98sec in the men's 110m hurdles. "I felt great through the warm-up, this is my kind of weather! This result feels great," said Tinch. lp-vg/mw

Anantjeet Singh Naruka Shoots Gold At Asian Championships

Indian shooter Anantjeet Singh Naruka fired his way to his first individual gold medal in the Asian Championships after edging out Kuwait's Mansour Al Rashidi in the men's skeet final here on Wednesday. Earlier in the day, the Indian pair of Saurabh Chaudhary and rising teenager Suruchi Inder Singh clinched the 10m air pistol mixed team bronze, beating Chinese Taipei. Naruka finished on top of the podium after prevailing over former Asian Games champion Al Rashidi 57-56 in the final. Al-Ishaq Ali Ahmed of Qatar settled for the bronze medal with 43. The 27-year-old Naruka, who has won team gold and mixed team gold in the 2023 edition of the championships, qualified for the final in second position with 119 after five rounds, while Kuwait's Abdulaziz Alsaad led the pack with 120 on their way to the final. Al Rashidi was third in the qualification with 119. For Naruka, an Asian Games silver medallist, this was his fifth medal overall in the continental tournament. Earlier, the duo of Saurabh and Suruchi defeated Liu Heng-Yu and Hsieh Hsiang-Chen 17-9 to add to the individual bronze that double Olympic-medallist Manu Bhaker had won in the women's 10m air pistol competition on Tuesday. The Indian pair qualified for the medal round in fifth place with Suruchi firing 292 and Saurabh scoring 286. The duo aggregated 578 in qualification as six teams made it to the medal round. The top two teams, China and South Korea, competed for the gold medal with the former winning 16-12. The other four teams competed for two bronze medals, with India overcoming Chinese Taipei in the first bronze-medal match and Iran defeating Vietnam 16-8 in the other. Earlier, Suruchi, who has been on song this season winning four World Cup gold medals, started the qualification round with a perfect 100 in the opening series. She faltered in the second to score 94 and ended the preliminary round with a 98. Chaudhary had series of 95, 96 and 95. In the fight for the bronze, where the first team to reach 16 points wins the match, Suruchi had seven scores in the '10s', six of them 10.4 or above, which played a big role in the victory. Junior pistol shooters win gold In the junior 10m air pistol mixed team event, the Indian pair of Vanshika Chaudhary and Gavin Anthony won the gold, defeating the Korean duo of Kim Yejin and Kim Dooyeon 16-14. The Indians finished second in the qualification round with an aggregate score of 578, with Vanshika firing 282 and Gavin 296.

Parliamentary Committee Raises Concerns On SAI's Financial Health, Lack Of Spending In Khelo India

Declaring Sports Authority of India (SAI) "critically" under-funded and under-staffed, the Parliamentary Standing Committee on sports has observed that India's international performances are "far from satisfactory" and also raised concerns around the lack of fund utilisation in the government's flagship Khelo India Scheme. The Committee, headed by Congress' Rajya Sabha MP Digvijaya Singh, observed that SAI's financial health is crucial to the country's international medal performance and urged the Sports Ministry to not just increase the allocation but also have a targetted approach towards those sports in which India is likely to win more medals. "....identify with clinical precision few sporting events in which we have got best chance to win medals and divert most of the resources at hand in nurturing the talents in such sports so that they reach international standards and win medals for the country," it noted. The committee, which also includes cricketer and AAP Rajya Sabha MP Harbhajan Singh, and BJP's Sambit Patra and Bansuri Swaraj among others, expressed "grave" concern over the shortage of staff and low funding of SAI. "The Committee is contrained (sic) to observe that the budget of SAI is critically national Centres of Excellence all over the country are required. This obviously needs higher budgetary allocation for the SAI. "...about 45 per cent of sanctioned posts in the Authority are presently lying vacant. The fact that these shortfalls in staff are being managed through contractual appointment may at best be only an ad hoc arrangement. "Substantial staff crunch in coaching and scientific cadres is indeed very alarming as it substantially undermines the coaching of athletes and jeopardize their chances to win medals," it pointed out. The panel "heard the views of Sports Secretary, and SAI representatives in its meeting held on June 6". It commended the recruitment drive to fill up these vacancies but asked the sports ministry to complete the process in the next six months and "furnish an Action Taken Report." While appreciating the sports ministry's efforts, the panel stated that the achievements on ground in terms of medals won in the major international sports events like Olympics are far from satisfactory. "...even though the medal tally in international sporting events has improved compared to the past, we still need to assiduously work on it. It is extremely painful that we being a country of approximately 1.4 billion populations could not win even a single gold medal in the last Olympics in 2024 and most of the Olympics before that," it stated. "...there is some gap or deficiency at the policy level in this Committee notes with appreciation that efforts of the Ministry and the corporate contribution in the development of sports ecosystem in the country is showing of late, some positive results." Concerns around Khelo India ================== The panel also noted with "concern" that during the last two financial years, the funds for government's flagship Khelo India Scheme have been diverted to National Centres of Excellence (NCOEs) of SAI. "This diversion has denied precious funds of Rs 38.79 crores to the Khelo India Scheme. This is more alarming as 122.30 crore of allocated funds under this scheme has also been returned to the Consolidated Fund of India," it observed. "...such practice of diversion of funds from one central scheme to another is not a healthy one as it reflects poor estimation, planning and implementation on the part of a Central Scheme." The Committee revealed that the Khelo India Scheme has been approved by the cabinet from 2021-22 to 2025-26. It recommended that the scheme be embedded in the SAI's operational structure thereafter. "As such, the current Khelo India Scheme is operational till 31st March 2026. The Committee notes that the lapsing of the Khelo India scheme offers the department an opportunity to permanently embed the Khelo India scheme in the organizational structure of SAI and to create dedicated staff positions within SAI to carry out the functions of the Khelo India scheme. "Accordingly, the Committee recommends that the budget for the Sports Department be sustained and that the SAI take over the existing responsibilities of Khelo India, including the disbursal of funds to other government agencies," it stated. The report also said that the ministry has acknowledged that an amount of Rs. 19.50 crore was allocated for play-field development under the Khelo India Scheme but has not been spent "due to lack of proposal from eligible entities".
