‘Harold & Kumar 4' in development; John Cho and Kal Penn expected to return

Harold and Kumar are back! Jon Hurwitz and Hayden Schlossberg, the writers of the Harold & Kumar films and the directors of 2008's Harold & Kumar Escape from Guantanamo Bay, have closed a deal to write and direct a fourth instalment of the popular buddy stoner comedy movie series.
They will be joined by Josh Heald, with whom they collaborated on Netflix's martial arts comedy series Cobra Kai. According to The Hollywood Reporter, actors John Cho and Kal Penn, who played the titular roles, are expected to return for the fourth film, though no deals have been closed so far with the actors.
'We're fired up to bring Harold and Kumar back in a return to the unapologetically R-rated, smoke-filled chaos that started it all. It's high time they puff and pass their wisdom onto a new generation. Just don't tell their kids,' said Hurwitz and Schlossberg in a statement to The Hollywood Reporter.
The first Harold & Kumar film, titled Harold & Kumar Go to White Castle and directed by Danny Leiner, followed Cho's Harold Lee, a Korean American, and Penn's Kumar Patel, an Indian American, as they take a rather adventurous road trip to a burger joint named White Castle to satiate their munchies. The success of the 2004 film led to two sequels, 2008's Escape from Guantanamo Bay and 2011's A Very Harold & Kumar Christmas, both directed by Todd Strauss-Schulson
Interestingly, all the three films also featured popular actor Neil Patrick Harris appearing in a cameo as himself. It remains unknown if the actor will return for the fourth instalment.
Hurwitz, Schlossberg and Heald will also produce the film under their Counterbalance Entertainment banner. Greg Shapiro, the producer of the Harold & Kumar films, also produces.

Streaming surpasses broadcast and cable TV viewing in US for first time

Streaming services , which have been steadily gaining in popularity, have finally dethroned broadcast and cable television in the U.S., winning more viewers in May than broadcast and cable combined, audience measurement firm Nielsen reported on Tuesday. Nielsen, in its monthly report The Gauge, said streaming captured 44.8% of total TV usage in the U.S. in May, highlighting the growing dominance of streaming platforms like YouTube and Netflix over the past four years. Google's YouTube alone accounted for 12.5% of all television viewing in May, representing the largest audience share for a streaming service. Free ad-supported streaming services , such as Paramount Global 's PlutoTV, Roku Channel and Fox's Tubi, also have gained popularity, collectively capturing 5.7% of TV viewership, Nielsen reported. Broadcast accounted for 20% of TV viewership in May, while cable accounted for 24%, Nielsen said. The rise of streaming, which received a big boost during the COVID pandemic when people were forced to seek entertainment at home, reflects the broader transformation in media consumption, as viewers increasingly favor on-demand content over traditional TV schedules. The trend is reshaping the television landscape, with implications for advertisers and content creators alike.

Suriya's Retro tanked at box office because of 'paid negative campaign'? Director Karthik Subbaraj makes SHOCKING claim

Suriya 's action-packed film Retro managed to generate massive hype among fans before its release. However, it witnessed a flat box office response after hitting the big screens, which was quite an unusual fate for a film directed by Karthik Subbaraj. And now, the filmmaker has opened up on his side of the story and made some shocking claims about what actually might have panned out for the film's failure. Karthik Subbaraj tags 'paid negative campaign' behind Retro's failure During an interview with Galatta, Karthik Subbaraj blamed 'paid hatred' and 'negative campaigns' as the deciding factor for most films' success or failure. He cited the example of his film, Retro, and revealed how he got to know that every actor has an enemy camp on social media. In his words, 'Even I heard from somebody that every actor has an enemy camp on Twitter, they are paid to run a campaign and discredit someone who shares good things about a film. Not just that, they have an office, and they get paid for it.' Karthik Subbaraj found Retro's negative reviews 'shocking' Moving on, the filmmaker looked back at the result of Retro, which fell victim to a malicious negative campaign. He expressed his shock at his film getting many negative reviews, while on the contrary, people told him they liked it. He said, 'Everyone whom I spoke to liked the film, they told me they are confused as to why the film got negative reviews. This paid campaign is very dangerous, and it is very shocking.' Retro's underwhelming box office collection after its theatrical run Speaking about Retro's box office collection, it ended its theatrical run after failing to hit even the Rs. 50 crore mark across Tamil Nadu. While the movie saw an initial boost on opening day, it fell significantly within the next couple of days. Retro's OTT release and verdict After a disappointing run in the theaters, Retro was released on Netflix for its OTT run from May 30 onwards. It began airing with a promising note, and audiences poured in their reviews shortly after. Despite a disappointing record at the box office, the romantic action thriller was successful on OTT. Viewers felt that the first half, interval block, and massy scenes were tailored to perfection and justified the hype.
