Candidate, kin marked dead on Mass. Dem database, seemingly by his rival, state Rep. Puppolo
The problem has been fixed since then, though, and candidate Michael Lachenmeyer is back among the living.
Lachenmeyer, 26, said Puppolo marked him and other members of his family as dead on VoteBuilder, a website used for campaigning, on June 18 — two days after Lachenmeyer publicly announced his run for Puppolo's seat in the 12th Hampden District, which includes all of Wilbraham and portions of Springfield, Monson and East Longmeadow.
'I feel angry and upset,' said Lachenmeyer last week. He told The Republican he was anxious and concerned that the action might've been politically motivated.
The Republican viewed a screenshot of Lachenmeyer's VoteBuilder account, in which there are six options for eliminating names from distribution lists. Multiple options are visible, including 'Do not walk (no home visits),' 'Do not call,' and 'Do not text,' but a final option, 'Deceased,' can be seen marked by 'Puppolo Jr., A. on 6/18/25,' the screenshot shows.
According to top state Democratic officials, the problem is not as nefarious as it seems.
'While we are not aware of the specific reasoning for this instance, campaigns for both parties remove opposing candidates and their supporters from contact lists, so they do not receive mail, phone calls, etc.,' Adam Roof, executive director of Massachusetts Democrats, said in an emailed statement.
He explained that there are other 'effective methods' to remove people from contact lists, and the state Democratic party does not 'train or advocate' for marking someone as deceased to remove them from receiving messaging.
Puppolo did not immediately respond to a phone or emailed request for comment on the matter.
Steve Kerrigan, chair of the state Democratic Party, said in an emailed statement that VoteBuilder is not an 'official voter list' but rather a database political campaigns used to make contact with voters.
'Any changes to a voter's status does not impact any official voter registry. In this instance, the status was corrected,' he said.
When reached for comment Monday, Lachenmeyer said he was feeling better about the situation. He said he has not spoken with Puppolo about it yet.
'I'm hopeful this won't be an issue going forward or for others like me who challenge incumbents,' he said.
The Democratic primary is in September.

Texas AG launches probe into Beto O'Rourke's political group over funding for Democrats who fled state
Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton opened an investigation Wednesday into potential 'unlawful activity' undertaken by former Rep. Beto O'Rourke's political group to help state Democratic lawmakers stay away from the capital amid a Republican-led effort to redraw congressional maps. Paxton is probing whether Powered by People, a political action committee founded by O'Rourke in 2019, may have violated bribery and other state laws by 'bankrolling' the more than 50 Texas House Democrats who have stalled a special legislative session by fleeing the state. 'Any Democrat coward breaking the law by taking a Beto Bribe will be held accountable,' Paxton said in a statement. 'Texas cannot be bought. I look forward to thoroughly reviewing all of the documents and communications obtained throughout this investigation.' Advertisement 3 Former Texas congressman Beto O'Rourke speaks during a town hall, Tuesday, Aug. 5, 2025, at the University of Nebraska Omaha in Omaha, Neb. AP 'These jet-setting runaways have already lost public trust by abandoning our state, and Texans deserve to know if they received illegal bribes to do it.' O'Rourke's group, which reported having $3.5 million in cash at the end of June, has reportedly covered airfare, lodging and other logistical expenses the absent state reps have incurred, according to the Texas Tribune. Advertisement A 2021 effort by Texas Democrats to stall new state voting laws by fleeing the capital was similarly supported by Powered by People, which spent more than half a million dollars to back the stunt, the outlet reported at the time. O'Rourke criticized Paxton's investigation in an X post Wednesday, and referenced the AG's own bribery scandal for which he was acquitted in 2023. 'The guy impeached for bribery is going after the folks trying to stop the theft of five Congressional seats,' O'Rourke wrote. 3 Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton pauses while speaking during a news conference in Washington, DC, on April 26, 2022. Getty Images Asked about his group's funding scheme in a CNN interview, the former congressman and Democratic presidential primary candidate said it was 'absolutely' worth it. 'If we fail, the consolidation of authoritarian power in America will be nearly unstoppable,' O'Rourke argued, warning that the redistricting push – which could give Republicans five additional seats in the House of Representatives by the 2026 midterm elections – would 'roll out a royal red carpet for a Trump third term.' Advertisement O'Rourke insisted that he believes the Democrats in hiding 'can stay out long enough to stop this steal in Texas.' As part of the investigation into Powered by People, Paxton has demanded documents and communications from the group regarding potentially unlawful activity, including its involvement in the Democrats' scheme to break quorum, his office said in a statement.

Tax Plan That Rattled Korean Stocks Heads to Ruling-Party Debate
South Korea's ruling party will meet with government officials Sunday to present its view on a proposal to raise the capital gains tax, which rattled markets and sparked a wave of public backlash. The Democratic Party setting a date for a discussion is an important signal for the speed of potential changes to the proposal after a petition against it swiftly gained enough support to send it to parliamentary committee review. But with Korean equities rebounding, there's less pressure to respond — especially as President Lee Jae Myung is on vacation this week and the petition officially runs through the end of the month.

Trump claims Howard Stern's SiriusXM show ‘went down' after the shock jock endorsed Hillary Clinton in 2016
President Trump claimed Howard Stern's longtime SiriusXM show 'went down' because the legendary radio host endorsed Hillary Clinton before the 2016 presidential election. Trump was fielding questions from reporters inside the Oval Office when he was briefed on the reported uncertainty surrounding the 71-year-old and his titular show. 'Howard Stern is a name I haven't heard – I used to do his show, we used to have fun – but I haven't heard that name in a long time,' Trump said Wednesday in the White House. 5 President Donald Trump speaks to reporters in the Oval Office of the White House on Aug. 6, 2025. REUTERS 'What happened? He got terminated?' he asked. Real America's Voice correspondent Brian Glenn, who brought up the topic with the president, claimed Stern and SiriusXM were parting ways over salary disagreements. 'You know when he went down? When he endorsed Hillary Clinton,' Trump said. 'He lost his audience. People said, 'Give me a break.' 'He went down when he endorsed Hillary Clinton,' the 79-year-old commander in chief emphasized. The host promised he would be returning to his regular schedule on Sept. 2. with no indication of if and when he is leaving. 'We'll be back on the air live. I've been refueling, so to speak,' Stern told his listeners. The second reiteration of Stern's legendary show began in 2006 and was renewed by SiriusXM in 2020. The Howard Stern Show 'I'll beat his ass,' Stern told his listeners at the time. During the lead up to the Nov. 5, 2024, general election, Stern was one of the rare media personalities to get an interview with then-Vice President Kamala Harris, who was the Democratic presidential nominee. Trump fumed at Stern after the episode aired, claiming he gave Harris softball questions. 'BETA MALE Howard Stern made a fool of himself on his low rated radio show when he 'interviewed' Lyin' Kamala Harris, and hit her with so many SOFTBALL questions that even she was embarrassed,' Trump wrote on Truth Social. 'He looked like a real fool, working so hard to make a totally incompetent and ill-equipped person look as good as possible, which wasn't very good,' he added. Stern endorsed Harris, claiming he would vote for a wall before Trump. 'I don't even understand how this election is close,' Stern told Harris. 'Why do my fellow Americans want this kind of chaos overseas?'
