From teens to seniors, 41 face money mule charges in Singapore

Malay Mail2 days ago

SINGAPORE, June 1 — A total of 41 people, including a teenager, are expected to be charged this week for their alleged roles as money mules or for facilitating scam-related activities, amid rising concern over online fraud in the country.
According to The Straits Times, the suspects — 32 men and nine women aged between 16 and 64 — are believed to have been involved in a range of scams, including government official impersonation scams, job scams, rental scams, e-commerce scams, and fake friend call scams.
Between June 2 and 6, they are expected to be charged with offences such as assisting others to retain benefits from criminal conduct, abetment to cheating, allowing unauthorised access to computer material, and illegally disclosing passwords or access codes to Singpass, Singapore's national digital identity system.
According to police, 35 of the suspects are accused of selling or handing over their personal bank accounts to criminal syndicates, enabling money laundering activities. Some had allegedly deceived banks into opening accounts, only to pass on the ATM cards and internet banking credentials to unknown parties.
Others are believed to have unlawfully disclosed their Singpass credentials, which allowed scammers to misuse their identities to open bank accounts.
'Anyone who allows their personal bank accounts to be used to receive and transfer money for others will be held accountable if these transactions are linked to crimes,' the police said.
In several cases, suspects were promised commissions of up to S$9,000 (RM30,000) for their bank or Singpass accounts but ultimately received no payment.
Under Singapore law, those convicted of helping another person retain criminal proceeds or abet cheating can face up to three years' jail, a fine, or both.
Meanwhile, facilitating unauthorised access to computer material carries a sentence of up to two years' jail, a fine, or both.
Offenders who illegally disclose Singpass credentials can also be jailed for up to three years, fined, or both.
The Straits Times reported that Singapore saw a record S$1.1 billion lost to scams in 2024 — about 70 per cent more than the S$651.8 million lost in 2023.
Police also recorded 51,501 scam reports in 2024, up from 46,563 the year before.
In response to the surge, 230 money mules were charged between August 2024 and March 2025 under stiffer sentencing guidelines introduced on August 21, 2024.
All adult offenders received jail terms of at least six months, while offenders below 21 were sent for reformative training.

Amirudin denies vacating Sungai Tua state seat, amid claim of by-election for Tengku Zafrul to become Selangor MB

SHAH ALAM, June 3 — Parti Keadilan Rakyat (PKR) vice president Datuk Seri Amirudin Shari today denied that the Sungai Tua state seat he won in the 2023 state election would be vacated. Describing the claim as imaginary and baseless, the Selangor Pakatan Harapan (PH) chairman said that vacating a seat to make way for an individual is not as easy as one might think. 'It's not that simple, it requires some research,' he said when met at the E-Bike Handover Ceremony to Selangor police at Selangor police contingent headquarters, here today. Amirudin, who is also the Selangor Menteri Besar, said this in response to the claim that the Sungai Tua state seat would be vacated to allow for a by-election to be held, as well as to make way for Trade, Investment and Industry Minister Tengku Datuk Seri Zafrul Abdul Aziz to contest. Last Friday, Tengku Zafrul announced his resignation from UMNO and his intention to join PKR. — Bernama * Editor's note: An earlier version erroneously spelt Sungai Tua as Sungai Tea in the headline and has since been corrected.

Better with BAM: Chan Chong Ming urges Pearly Tan and Thinaah to stay for support and structure

PETALING JAYA, June 3 — 'It's better to stay with the Badminton Association of Malaysia (BAM) than to turn professional' and that was the advice from former national shuttler Chan Chong Ming to national top women's doubles pair Pearly Tan-M. Thinaah, who are currently considering their future with the national body. The former men's doubles player believes that remaining with BAM offers the duo significant advantages, particularly in terms of support services that independent players often lack. 'I think Pearly-Thinaah should stay (with BAM). If you stay with the association, you don't need to worry how to book air tickets, accommodation and injury issues as you have a support team,' he told reporters when met at the Daikin International Badminton Championship 2025, here, today. Also present was Youth and Sports Minister Hannah Yeoh. Pearly-Thinaah have yet to sign a new contract with BAM following the expiry of their previous deal at the end of last year. Chong Ming, who now runs a badminton academy, said his experience coaching independent players shows that BAM still offers superior physical preparation resources. 'As a coach, we have experience in competition, like tactical, but in terms of strength and conditioning, we (professional coaches) aren't there yet (top level),' he said. While encouraging Pearly-Thinaah to focus on their current tournaments, Hannah hoped that the world number four pair to consider the benefits and long-term commitments of staying within the national setup under the BAM. She cited the notable progress of national men's doubles pair Aaron Chia-Soh Wooi Yik as an example of what structured support within BAM can provide. Aaron-Wooi Yik are in a sensational form, having won three titles since last April namely Badminton Asia Championships 2025, Thailand Open 2025 last month and Singapore Open 2025, last Sunday. In the meantime, Hannah, who was delighted with Aaron-Wooi Yik's recent performance, hopes the two-times Olympic Games bronze medallists can maintain their consistency under the tutelage of national men's doubles head coach, Herry Iman Pierngadi, who took up the role last February. — Bernama

Singapore transport operator SMRT hit with S$3m fine after major East-West Line breakdown last Sept

SINGAPORE, June 3 — Singapore's public transport operator SMRT will be fined S$3 million (S$1 = RM3.30) following a six-day MRT service disruption on the East-West Line (EWL) in September last year, according to the Land Transport Authority (LTA). LTA said that in determining the penalty amount, the agency took into account that SMRT had borne the cost of repairs and had provided free bridging buses and regular bus services, as well as shuttle train services at the affected stations. 'It also provided free travel to passengers alighting at Jurong East and Buona Vista stations for the six days of disruption. The total costs amounted to over S$10 million,' it said in a statement on Tuesday. The penalty will be channelled to the Public Transport Fund to help lower-income families with their public transport expenses. LTA said its investigation into the September 25 to 30, 2024 service disruption concluded that the likely cause was degraded grease in the axle box, which subsequently led to overheating and failure. This conclusion was supported by the presence and location of burnt rubber and metal pieces from the chevron springs found along the path of the affected train. However, the agency noted that it was not possible to establish a definitive root cause. On September 25, 2024, a dislodged axle box caused the wheels of the third car of a Kawasaki Heavy Industries (KHI) train to fall off the track, damaging the tracks between Dover station and Ulu Pandan Depot. The incident resulted in MRT service disruption between Jurong East and Buona Vista stations. Repair works were carried out over six days, and full services resumed on Oct 1, 2024. — Bernama
