MoEF panel nod for Wayanad twin tunnel project

Time of India28-05-2025
Kochi: The Expert Appraisal Committee (EAC) under the Union ministry of environment, forest and climate change has recommended the Kozhikode-Wayanad twin tunnel project for environmental clearance.

The recommendation, subject to conditions, was made at a committee meeting on May 14 and 15.
The Rs 2,043.74-crore Anakkampoyil-Kalladi-Meppadi twin tube tunnel road project aims to reduce the travel time between Kozhikode and Wayanad. The project, which includes an 8.753-km long twin tube tunnel and a four-lane approach road, has drawn opposition from environmental organisations.
The EAC observed that the tunnel alignment passes through a highly vulnerable terrain prone to landslides, where massive landslides occurred in 2019 and 2024, necessitating precautions during and post-construction to avert vibration-induced landslips.
"All the recommendations made by the assessment of possible impacts due to blasting on various surface structures and surroundings during excavation of the road tunnel by the CSIR Central Institute of Mining and Fuel Research (CSIR-CIMFR) shall be implemented, and the status of compliance report shall be submitted along with the six-monthly report," the EAC observed.
The govt should establish the Appankappu elephant corridor, preferably by direct acquisition of six plots of land adding up to 3.0579 ha, as these plots have forest on either side, and acquisition or prescribing compatible land use would effectively increase the existing tenuous linkage to about 1 km.
It facilitates the movement of elephants from Camel Hump mountains (lying in South Wayanad, Kozhikode and Nilambur North forest divisions) towards the larger forested landscape of Nilambur South division, Karimpuzha Sanctuary and Silent Valley National Park.
"A detailed monitoring should be commissioned on the small population of endemic and endangered bird Banasura Chilappan in the Sky Islands above the proposed tunnel.

The monitoring should look at the genetic vulnerability of the species due to disturbances caused by the tunnel, if any," the EAC adds.
In its previous meeting held in April, the committee deferred its clearance and sought details on studies conducted on geology, geotechnical aspects, landslides and water drainage by expert institutions. The state-level expert appraisal committee had cleared the project in March.

For way out of garbage mess, MCG taps into community knowledge in Gurgaon

Gurgaon: MCG on Tuesday held marathon meetings with RWAs and citizen groups, seeking solutions for the city's waste management problem — an initiative backed by chief principal secretary to the CM, Rajesh Khullar, who has been camping in Gurgaon for the past week to address some of its most pressing civic issues. Residents suggested all sorts of solutions. On waste management, representatives of citizens' group Making Model Gurugram (MMG) proposed sustainable, decentralised solutions, such as setting up compressed bio-gas (CBG) plants and material recovery facilities at zonal levels. United Gurugram RWA (UGR) highlighted the need for better upkeep of city parks. UGR suggested revising the park maintenance rates from the current Rs 4.5 per sq metre to Rs 12 per sq metre, which would also cover in-situ composting of horticulture waste. "The presentation and ensuing dialogue underscored the urgent need for a transparent, phased approach that involves civil society, RWAs and resident groups meaningfully in decision-making. This thoughtful AEAE model — awareness, education, action, enforcement — process is expected to unfold over the next two years to make Gurgaon garbage-free, achieve almost 100% segregation, reduce the fresh waste to landfill by 85% and create CBG plants and recycling capability," Sarin said. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Drive, Sail & Save – The Budget-Friendly Way to Explore Europe! For doorstep waste collection in villages, the existing model of daily waste collection can be done and waste collected should be further segregated at the MRF centres, for which we have suggested 10 such zones. " On the UGR's suggestion to enhance the park maintenance fee, MCG commissioner Pradeep Dahiya responded that a written proposal should be submitted for consideration. The commissioner said the civic body is working towards setting up a plant for better management of horticultural waste. RWA and society representatives will transport the horticultural waste from their areas to this plant for its processing. Dahiya shared information about the corporation's upcoming plans. He said the tender process for door-to-door waste collection is underway and will be implemented soon, enhancing the cleanliness system in the city. Similarly, the tender for cleaning roads and streets is also in process. He said the corporation has started working in "mission-mode" to improve the street lighting system, aiming to illuminate the entire city before Diwali. He emphasised the corporation's goal is to create a clean, beautiful, green and well-lit Gurgaon. During the discussion on solid waste management with the UGR team, the commissioner said RWAs or societies wishing to manage waste at their level should declare themselves as bulk waste generators (BWGs). The municipal corporation will not charge any waste fees from such societies, officials said at the meeting. The MCG commissioner also said at the meeting that the corporation is establishing a central store to expedite maintenance work. The residents were also informed that market areas under the Haryana Urban Development Authority have now come under the jurisdiction of the municipal corporation, where development work will commence soon. Still dumping garbage out in the open? Greater Noida cams might be watching you

Noida: Greater Noida Industrial Development Authority (GNIDA) will now record people dumping waste in the open. The Authority has intensified its campaign against open garbage dumping, warning that repeat violators will face strict penalties, public naming, and even seizure of vehicles used for illegal dumping. According to officials, despite regular cleaning drives, garbage piles continue to appear on roadsides, service lanes, and green belts in several sectors. The problem persists because some residents and waste transporters avoid handing over garbage to collection vehicles and instead dump it in the open, they said. In order to address this, GNIDA's health department has begun identifying households that fail to give their waste to garbage vans. Collection staff have been instructed to record such addresses, while dedicated teams trace dumped waste back to its source and issue fines. Resident Welfare Associations (RWAs) are also assisting in monitoring offenders, making detection more effective. "Greater Noida is a beautiful city, and it is the responsibility of all residents to keep it clean and green," said GNIDA additional CEO Sreelakshmy VS. She urged citizens to maintain two separate bins at home for wet and dry waste and to hand over the segregated garbage to collection vehicles regularly. General manager (health) RK Bharti said that similar action will follow in other areas. "If anyone is found dumping garbage in the open, they will face heavy penalties. We are determined to put an end to this practice," he said. GNIDA officials have further warned that if residents continue to flout waste disposal rules, their photographs will be displayed at sector gates and RWA offices to name and shame repeat offenders. Earlier this year, the Authority sought ideas and cooperation from the public to organize a series of community-focused events aimed at promoting better waste management, reducing plastic usage, and enhancing civic responsibility. It invited people from all walks of life to come forward with suggestions, host activities, and become active partners in this civic movement. The chief minister further said that under the ongoing campaign, 16,000 metric tonnes of garbage was already removed from the Yamuna. Saini further said that the BOD level of the drain falling into the Yamuna from Palla village in Karnal district is 80, and necessary steps are being taken to further purify it. He said that there was a significant improvement in the BOD level of Yamuna water at Okhla in Faridabad.
