James Blunt hit You're Beautiful is less romantic when you know the real meaning

'You're beautiful, it's true,' sang James Blunt in his 2005 hit single, seemingly setting the benchmark for love songs with the ultimate romantic declaration.
However, 20 years on, the lyrics seem a little less adorable and a bit more… creepy?
Today, James, 51, is celebrating two decades since You're Beautiful was released as a single from his debut album, Back to Bedlam.
There's no denying the tune changed his life, with the songwriter going on to sell 20million records worldwide, win two Brits, and earn five Grammy nominations.
But he remains proud of his somewhat one-hit wonder status, even declaring in his bio on X: 'Proof that one song is all you need.'
You're Beautiful reached number one in 13 countries, as listeners were enchanted by its lyrics about forbidden love and longing.
While marking its anniversary, though, James has seemingly brought to light the song's true meaning – and let's just say we'll never listen to it in quite the same way now.
Taking to social media with a light-hearted video, he said: '20 years ago today, I released a song that bought me this house.
'Whoever thought a song about being high as a kite on drugs, stalking someone else's girlfriend would resonate quite so much?'
He signed off to his followers: 'Thank you. You guys are beautiful.'
Indeed, we aren't the only ones who failed to pick up on the sinister undertone of the lyrics, but it seems James's fans are more than fine with it.
'Never ever knew that was what it was about! Too funny now I know yet still a great song and, you're very welcome lol', replied @murray_dic32840.
@CarlBovisNature branded You're Beautiful 'the most beautiful stalking song ever made', while @rickymakescrap joked: 'Plot twist: The house is next door to that woman.'
'One of the best songs in a generation. Thank YOU!', added @fabianredpath.
Lines in the chart-topping anthem that you might hear a little differently now include: 'She smiled at me on the subway / She was with another man,' and, 'I saw your face in a crowded place / And I don't know what to do / 'Cause I'll never be with you.'
James also sings: 'And I don't think that I'll see her again / But we shared a moment that will last 'til the end,' and 'There must be an angel with a smile on her face / When she thought up that I should be with you.'
Oh, and as for the 'being high as a kite on drugs' thing, who could forget, 'She could see from my face that I was f***ing high,' which was censored to 'flying high' in the radio versions, confusing pretty much everyone.
Speaking previously about how the song came about, James told The Guardian: 'One day, I was on the underground in London and saw an ex-girlfriend with her new boyfriend. Our eyes met, but we just walked past each other, and I went home and wrote the words to You're Beautiful in two minutes.
'I went to see my songwriter friend Sacha Skarbek in Los Angeles, and, with Amanda Ghost as a co-writer, we finished the song.
'It's always been portrayed as romantic, but it's actually a bit creepy. It's about a guy (me) who's high and stalking someone else's girlfriend on the subway. But everyone has those moments where you wonder, 'What if I'd said something?''
But you'll be pleased to know that, despite his self-confessed stalking phase, James is now happily married.
In 2014, he wed Sofia Wellesley, having met two years prior through his sister. They also have two sons.
Speaking about their relationship, James, who is typically a closed book beyond his music, said in 2020: 'I keep my private life private and yet write these deeply personal songs.'
Asked at the time whether he understood the pressure Prince Harry felt regarding his marriage to Megan Markle, he added of public interest: 'It can be intense. More Trending
'Everyone in the public eye will face criticism, and it's worth realising that those people are human beings.'
In 2023, the Bonfire Heart hitmaker, who also owns West London pub The Fox and Pheasant, continued joking about his big hitter and how it helps him to clear out at closing time.
'I play You're Beautiful at closing time to clear out the locals,' he quipped. 'My pub is the real passion project; it's just amazing.'
Never change, James.

King serenaded by Meghan and Harry's wedding singers at SXSW London
To view this video please enable JavaScript, and consider upgrading to a web browser that supports HTML5 video King Charles braved the rain in east London today visiting the city's first ever SXSW festival. The Kingdom Choir, who performed at the Duke and Duchess of Sussex's wedding in 2018, sang to Charles while he toured the event in Shoreditch. Charles kept himself dry holding an umbrella while meeting key figures in the creative arts and technology industries. This week, London has been filled with thousands people attending SXSW, a conference that began in Texas but has evolved into a broader cultural festival. The focal point of Charles's was the immersive art installation, centred around sustainability, a subject which the King is passionate about. The exhibit, made by London artist Damien Roach, is called Grounding. It utilises AI and data to transform landscape images, reflecting the natural world's constant adaptation and evolution. In a previous video address, Charles compared the rise of AI to the discovery of electricity, the splitting of the atom, and the creation of the internet. He went on to meet speakers for a panel session called 'Love the Earth', before visiting Spitalfields to see an art exhibition from Caribbean artists, about British Art and Culture. SXSW has been in full swing all week. SXSW CEO Max Alexander told Metro, one of the conference's media partners, that attendees will witness a historic 'love letter to London'. More Trending Idris Elba, Katherine Ryan, Erykah Badu, Alice Glass, and Sophie Turner are among the many actors, musicians, creative minds, and pioneering entrepreneurs who will be giving talks and performances until Saturday. Earlier this week, Sadiq Khan opened the inaugural London festival during a panel with Tania Bryer at The Truman Brewery. 'This week the creative eyes of the world will be on London as our capital becomes the first European city to ever host SXSW,' he said. All the easter eggs fans have spotted in the Wicked: For Good trailer
To view this video please enable JavaScript, and consider upgrading to a web browser that supports HTML5 video Up Next Previous Page Next Page The trailer for Wicked: For Good has finally arrived, and with it, a tidal wave of excitement, speculation, and screen grabs. The sequel to last year's Wicked, which soared to $755million (£590m) at the global box office and landed 10 Oscar nominations, brings back Cynthia Erivo as Elphaba and Ariana Grande as Glinda to continue the witches' origin story. Based on the second act of the Wicked stage musical, itself adapted from Gregory Maguire's novel (and of course, L. Frank Baum's The Wonderful Wizard of Oz), Wicked: For Good picks up with Elphaba in hiding and Glinda navigating the aftermath of their diverging paths. The trailer teases heartbreak, rebellion, and the arrival of a mysterious figure in ruby slippers. But beyond the drama and vocals, fans are noticing something else: Easter eggs. X user @2nnjenn_ wrote: 'Quick someone smarter than me find all the easter eggs and spoilers from the Wicked: For Good trailer. #wicked' Ariana returns as Glinda in the new trailer (Picture:Universal Pictures UK) And we get our first look at the yellow brick road (Picture: Universal Pictures UK) Some fans think the trailer supports the fan theory that Elphaba is bisexual (Picture: Universal Pictures UK) @juan_g_lopez605 agreed: 'me looking for easter eggs in the trailer #WickedForGood' One of the most talked-about elements of the trailer is the implied arrival of Dorothy Gale. Several users pointed out that the ruby red slipper shots directly reference the original Wizard of Oz film, even mimicking exact shots. Many fans connected the imagery to the 1939 classic, suggesting that director Jon M Chu is intentionally tying the two film worlds together. One X user pointed out that the trailer also included cut scenes from part one, perhaps suggesting there's more crossover between the parts than previously thought. This makes sense, given that both Wicked films were edited simultaneously. Fans now speculate that some moments were intentionally held back to enrich Part Two's emotional and narrative stakes. One of the most widely shared discoveries involves Michelle Yeoh's Madame Morrible, who appears to summon a massive tornado in the trailer. Fans noticed that the skies outside during this moment look eerily familiar. @TheeStellaBrown wrote: 'YALL OMG in the wicked for good trailer, when Morrible summons the tornado, outside it's the same colours as the wizard of oz before oz omg !!!' The sequence seems to directly reference the sepia tones and swirling clouds from the moment Dorothy's farmhouse is swept away in the 1939 film. The trailer's emotional center is a tearful goodbye between Elphaba and Glinda. 'You're the only friend I ever had,' Elphaba tells her. 'The only one that mattered,' Glinda replies. It's underscored by a new version of the duet For Good, and follows Erivo's haunting rendition of No Good Deed. For many fans, the moment reads as more than just friendship. @thisredwine: 'new wicked trailer featuring 'no good deed' (the best elphaba/fiyero song) and 'for good' (the best elphaba/glinda song) as a symbol of elphaba's bisexuality in this essay i will—' Whether read as subtext or text, the deep emotional intimacy between the two women continues to resonate with queer audiences. From the Wizard's smoke-filled throne room to shots of the Yellow Brick Road curling into the horizon, the trailer is filled with visual homages to The Wizard of Oz. Fans have pointed out recurring camera angles, costume designs, and lighting cues that seem pulled straight from the 1939 film. As one user put it: 'It's giving vintage MGM… and I'm not mad about it.' Director Jon M Chu has described the two-part structure as a necessity, saying it would have been 'impossible' to do the musical justice in one film. Now, with Wicked: For Good set to close the curtain on this reimagined Oz, fans are soaking in every frame. Got a story? Romeo Beckham and Kim Turnbull 'split' after she's drawn into family feud
Romeo Beckham has split from his girlfriend Kim Turnbull weeks after she joined him for David Beckham's 50th celebrations, it is reported. It is thought the pair have split after seven months together, amid reports of a family feud between the Beckham family and eldest son Brooklyn Beckham, 26. Friends said things 'fizzled out' between Romeo, 22, and Kim, 26, in what's been an 'amicable' split that has 'nothing to do' with Brooklyn's wife Nicola Peltz blaming her for the Beckham rift. A friend of the pair told the Mail: 'Romeo and Kim are both young and they had a lovely time together but at that age things don't always last forever and they decided to split up. 'They have been friendly since and have even been at the same venues. It's a huge shame, particularly as David and Victoria really adored her and thought she made Romeo happy but it wasn't to be. 'It happened a couple of weeks ago and relations have remained friendly between them.' 'David and Victoria would hate for the view to be that they split because of Nicola and Brooklyn because that simply isn't the case. 'The fact is that Kim has got a really busy career as a DJ and Romeo has a busy work life too, there is lots of travelling for both of them and having a relationship at this time isn't all that conducive to their lives.' Over the past few months, it's been whispered that the Beckham feud was between Brooklyn and Romeo. It was rumoured Brooklyn dated Kim before his younger brother in 2016, causing a rift between the pair. However, Cruz Beckham, 20, weighed in on the rumours in a now-deleted social media comment, in which he clarified: 'Brooklyn and Kim never dated.' TMZ reported that Brooklyn and Romeo have fallen out since Kim came onto the scene, as Brooklyn and Kim dated as teenagers in 2016 The outlet claimed that Brooklyn and his wife Nicola Peltz Beckham question if Kim has the right intentions when it comes to dating Romeo. They also added that sources informed them that Brooklyn and his wife will no longer attend family events where Kim will be present. Since reports of the feud came to light, they haven't exactly been shut down by the Beckhams, with Brooklyn making various cryptic comments. A source previously told Metro that Brooklyn is keen to patch things up with his father and was sad not to attend his big 50th bash. 'Brooklyn feels disappointed in himself for not attending David's 50th birthday party,' they said. 'He wants things to go back to how they were, but it feels as if the divide has separated the family deeply.' And an insider explained that Victoria was desperately hoping her son will 'come around'. 'She's hoping Brooklyn will come around and see things for what they are,' they said. 'They've always been a close-knit family and seeing how things are now has been devastating for Victoria and David.' Brooklyn appears to have shot a series of public digs at his family over the past few months. To view this video please enable JavaScript, and consider upgrading to a web browser that supports HTML5 video He shared a video of himself and Nicola on Instagram with a caption vowing to always 'choose [her]'. He wrote: 'My whole world x I will love you forever x I always choose you baby x you're the most amazing person i know xx me and you forever baby.' In response, Cruz posted a message dedicated to his mum, dad, and siblings on his own Instagram story. 'Victoria is upset that things have escalated to this point. Brooklyn has made his position clear in his recent post and that has left both herself and David heartbroken,' the insider told Metro. 'They will always be there for Brooklyn, and as Victoria said in a recent interview, she's a brilliant mum to her children – they all mean the world to her. 'But things at the moment feel divided and Brooklyn's remarks haven't helped the situation. They are desperate for things to improve.' More Trending A source close to Brooklyn told Metro: 'It's sad that a simple statement of love and appreciation for his wife is being manipulated into something that it isn't.' In a recent interview, Brooklyn also appeared to backtrack on the origin of his hot sauce range name, Cloud23. On the official website for the sauce, according to The Mirror a member of Brooklyn's team replied to a question about the name, writing: 'The 23 included in our brand is a warm nod to Brooklyn's father, David Beckham, who wore number 23 while playing for Real Madrid and LA Galaxy.' However, in a chat to Glamour Brooklyn gave a different story, explaining: 'The 23 stands for our engagement date and my age back then.' Got a story?
