Warisan rep slams ‘recycled promises' ahead of Sabah polls
Wong, who is from Parti Warisan, said the idea had already been put forward in 2021 when Pakatan Harapan signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) with the current Chief Minister, Datuk Seri Hajiji Noor, which included a two-term cap for the Chief Minister's post.
'But during their five-year administration, despite having a two-thirds majority in the state assembly, they didn't do anything to implement this proposal.
'Now that the election is approaching, suddenly they're bringing it up again as if it's a fresh promise. Isn't this misleading the people?' he said.
He was responding to a recent statement by GRS deputy secretary-general Datuk Armizan Mohd Ali, who is also the Domestic Trade and Cost of Living Minister, that the proposal would be included in GRS' election manifesto.
Wong questioned why the GRS-led state government failed to pursue the constitutional amendment earlier if they were truly committed to reform.
'They had the numbers. Why didn't they do it then? Why only now?' he asked.
He also criticised Armizan, who is the Papar MP, for using what he called 'sweet slogans' that do not translate into actual improvements in people's lives.
'On paper, their words may sound good, but is our life today really better? The government isn't the one who gets to answer that — the people are the ones living the reality,' he said.
He said that despite Sabah's natural resources and strategic location, the state remained one of the poorest, still grappling with poor infrastructure, power and water cuts, bad roads and inadequate basic services.
Wong urged Sabahans to take inspiration from Sarawak in electing local leaders who are genuinely focused on their people's welfare.
'This time, let's give the mandate to a local party, Parti Warisan, to take up the responsibility. Warisan is inclusive, diverse and independent of peninsula-based political agendas,' he said.
Hajiji, who will be leading GRS into the upcoming state election for a second term, had recently told party members that the next term would be his last.

Umno leaders ignorant of MA63: Ruslan
Published on: Monday, July 21, 2025 Published on: Mon, Jul 21, 2025 By: Iskandar Dzulkifli Text Size: Ruslan criticised those who equate Sabah with other states, saying it reflects ignorance of the formation of Malaysia. PAPAR: Umno's Datuk Seri Ahmad Maslan should not belittle the 'Sabah for Sabahan' (S4S) slogan by equating Sabah to other states in Malaysia when the Malaysia Agreement clearly held that both Bornean states are partners and not states of Malaya. Parti Bersatu Sabah (PBS) Vice President Datuk Ruslan Muharam said that S4S symbolises the aspirations of the people of Sabah who want to see the state progress and prosper under the leadership of its own people, while still valuing cooperation with the Federal Government. Advertisement 'S4S is a reflection of reality, not mere political rhetoric. It embodies the spirit of Sabahans' struggle for their rights and privileges as outlined in the Malaysia Agreement 1963 (MA63),' Ruslan said during the launch of the G-NIUS e-Tuition programme. He stressed that Ahmad should be more aware and respectful of Sabahans' sensitivities, and not undermine S4S, which represents the rights and dignity of the people of Sabah. Ahmad, who is also the Head of Umno's Central War Room Secretariat, recently said that the slogan 'Malaysia for Sabah' (M4S) is more inclusive than S4S. The Pontian MP argued that M4S implies that Sabahans are not only for Sabah but are part of a greater Malaysian identity shared with the other 14 states. In response, Ruslan reiterated that Sabah is not just a state but one of the three founding regions of Malaysia, alongside Sarawak and Peninsular Malaysia, under the MA63 agreement. Ruslan, who is also the Assistant Minister to the Chief Minister of Sabah, criticised those who equate Sabah with other states, saying it reflects ignorance of the formation of Malaysia. 'Sabah is a region, not an ordinary state. Its status is unique and special, alongside Sarawak and Peninsular Malaysia, in forming this country as stipulated in MA63, in line with the 2022 constitutional amendment. Therefore, all parties should acknowledge this fact, and respect the history and spirit of the agreement which laid the foundation of modern-day Malaysia,' he said. * Follow us on our official WhatsApp channel and Telegram for breaking news alerts and key updates! * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news? Another assembly sitting possible - Masidi
Masidi delivering the Chief Minister's speech at the award ceremony. KOTA KINABALU (July 20): There is a possibility of another State Assembly sitting before its dissolution ahead of the coming state elections, said State Finance Minister Datuk Seri Masidi Manjun. Masidi made the statement when asked about the potential tabling of the Sabah Budget 2026. He explained that the State Budget must be presented by the Finance Minister either before or after the state elections to avoid any disruption in government operations, including the implementation of programmes and the payment of civil servant wages. 'If the elections are held earlier, then I think we still have time to table the budget around November. But if the assembly is dissolved later, we might be able to table it around December,' he told reporters at the sidelines of the International Business Review (IBR) ASEAN Awards here on Saturday night. When asked whether the budget would be tabled before or after the State Assembly is dissolved, Masidi said the decision rests with the Chief Minister. On the possibility of another sitting before dissolution, he added, 'The possibility is always there.' Previously, after the July 8 State Assembly sitting, Chief Minister Datuk Seri Hajiji Noor had hinted that it might be the final session for the current term. When asked by reporters if it marked the end of the legislative term, he responded it was 'more or less,' noting that all bills beneficial to the state had already been passed. Political analysts expect the dissolution of the state assembly after Parti Gagasan Rakyat Sabah (Gagasan Rakyat) has held its congress from July 25-27. They speculate that Hajiji is likely to call for polls before National Day on August 31 or after Malaysia Day on September 16. Hajiji said that he would consult the presidents of all Gabungan Rakyat Sabah (GRS) component parties before making any move to dissolve the Sabah State Legislative Assembly. The 16th Sabah State Legislative Assembly will be automatically dissolved on Nov 11 this year if it is not dissolved earlier. Speaker Datuk Seri Kadzim M Yahya said the five-year term of the assembly is calculated from the date of the first sitting of the 16th Sabah State Assembly, which was on Nov 12, 2020, making Nov 11 this year the end of the term. Gagasan Rakyat, PBS, STAR, SAPP, Usno, PCS, PHRS and LDP are members of GRS. PBS and STAR have called for GRS to contest solo in the 17th State Election.
