Another assembly sitting possible - Masidi
KOTA KINABALU (July 20): There is a possibility of another State Assembly sitting before its dissolution ahead of the coming state elections, said State Finance Minister Datuk Seri Masidi Manjun.
Masidi made the statement when asked about the potential tabling of the Sabah Budget 2026.
He explained that the State Budget must be presented by the Finance Minister either before or after the state elections to avoid any disruption in government operations, including the implementation of programmes and the payment of civil servant wages.
'If the elections are held earlier, then I think we still have time to table the budget around November. But if the assembly is dissolved later, we might be able to table it around December,' he told reporters at the sidelines of the International Business Review (IBR) ASEAN Awards here on Saturday night.
When asked whether the budget would be tabled before or after the State Assembly is dissolved, Masidi said the decision rests with the Chief Minister.
On the possibility of another sitting before dissolution, he added, 'The possibility is always there.'
Previously, after the July 8 State Assembly sitting, Chief Minister Datuk Seri Hajiji Noor had hinted that it might be the final session for the current term. When asked by reporters if it marked the end of the legislative term, he responded it was 'more or less,' noting that all bills beneficial to the state had already been passed.
Political analysts expect the dissolution of the state assembly after Parti Gagasan Rakyat Sabah (Gagasan Rakyat) has held its congress from July 25-27.
They speculate that Hajiji is likely to call for polls before National Day on August 31 or after Malaysia Day on September 16.
Hajiji said that he would consult the presidents of all Gabungan Rakyat Sabah (GRS) component parties before making any move to dissolve the Sabah State Legislative Assembly.
The 16th Sabah State Legislative Assembly will be automatically dissolved on Nov 11 this year if it is not dissolved earlier.
Speaker Datuk Seri Kadzim M Yahya said the five-year term of the assembly is calculated from the date of the first sitting of the 16th Sabah State Assembly, which was on Nov 12, 2020, making Nov 11 this year the end of the term.
Gagasan Rakyat, PBS, STAR, SAPP, Usno, PCS, PHRS and LDP are members of GRS.
PBS and STAR have called for GRS to contest solo in the 17th State Election.

Merdeka Jalur Gemilang Convoy 2025 to cover 2,500km across Sabah
Jainisah (left) during an interview for the 'Kami Bah Ini' program. – Information Department photo KOTA KINABALU (July 22): The Konvoi Kembara Merdeka Jalur Gemilang (KMJG) 2025 will traverse 2,500 kilometers, stopping at 75 locations across Sabah over 20 days from August 5 to 23. Sabah Information Director Jainisah Mohd Noor stated that the launch of KMJG 2025, organized by the Sabah Department of Information (JAPEN), will be officiated by the Sabah Chief Minister. The convoy aims to engage communities directly in this year's National Day and Sabah Day celebrations. 'The KMJG 2025 launch will take place on Friday, August 1 2, starting at 7:30am at the Kota Kinabalu Community Hall. Twenty vehicles and 60 participants from various departments and strategic partner agencies will join the convoy,' she said after an interview session for the 'Kami Bah Ini' (KBI) program at RTM TV Studio on Monday. 'This year's convoy emphasizes the special theme 'Malaysia MADANI: Caring for the People,' with program content focused on serving communities through direct agency services, community activities, skills workshops, and strategic multi-stakeholder involvement. KMJG 2025 features engaging activities such as the People's Feast, MADANI Spirit, Info Busking, National Day Mural Painting, Wayang Pacak (street screenings), and skills workshops – all highlighting inclusivity and public participation,' she added. Jainisah also announced that convoy participants will continue the '1 House 1 Jalur Gemilang' (1 House 1 Malaysian Flag) initiative, encouraging all citizens to fly the national flag at homes, offices, government buildings, private vehicles, and government premises. The initiative targets seven key clusters: education, higher education, health, security, community, industry, and government agencies. 'It is hoped that local communities will respond to this call by hoisting the Jalur Gemilang as a symbol of patriotic spirit and love for the country,' she explained. The public can obtain further details about KMJG 2025 through official channels, including the portal live Facebook and TikTok broadcasts, and media coverage by RTM, Bernama, and other local outlets. JAPEN Sabah will also provide daily live updates on social media. Jainisah expressed hope that Sabahans would jointly ignite the spirit of patriotism by flying the Jalur Gemilang and participating in KMJG 2025 activities. Meanwhile, Kota Kinabalu Mayor Datuk Sri Dr Sabin Samitah said the number of contingents for the National Day parade will be limited to prevent it from taking too long. 'Last year, it was observed that several contingents represented similar activities or groups, leading to some public complaints as they were not pleased with that situation,' he explained in an interview by SabahVFM.

Sabah approves 723MW power projects to meet growing electricity demand
Hajiji KOTA KINABALU (July 22): The Sabah Energy Council (MTS) has approved, in principle, a total of 723 megawatts (MW) in new power generation projects to meet the state's medium-term electricity needs. Chief Minister Datuk Seri Hajiji Noor said the approvals covered 360MW from gas-fired plants in Kimanis and Tawau, along with 363MW from renewable sources, including hydro and wind. These projects have received conditional technical and commercial clearance. 'All decisions must be made with balance and prudence, taking into account the state's economic growth, industrial demands and the public's capacity to bear energy costs,' he said after chairing the MTS meeting here on Tuesday. Hajiji said MTS continues to serve as the state's highest platform for aligning energy policy and noted that several fast-track projects approved last year are already delivering results. Sabah's generation reserve margin has also risen from 10 per cent in January 2023, before the Sabah Energy Commission (ECoS) assumed regulatory authority, to 17 per cent currently, with a target of 30 per cent by year-end. Hajiji added that these fast-track efforts have helped reduce the state's System Average Interruption Duration Index (SAIDI), from 363 minutes in the first half of 2023 to 215 minutes in the same period this year, and further down to 162 minutes in the latest reporting period. Hajiji also called for greater empowerment of state-linked companies (GLCs) to play a mor significant role in Sabah's energy landscape.
