Sabah approves 723MW power projects to meet growing electricity demand

KOTA KINABALU (July 22): The Sabah Energy Council (MTS) has approved, in principle, a total of 723 megawatts (MW) in new power generation projects to meet the state's medium-term electricity needs.
Chief Minister Datuk Seri Hajiji Noor said the approvals covered 360MW from gas-fired plants in Kimanis and Tawau, along with 363MW from renewable sources, including hydro and wind. These projects have received conditional technical and commercial clearance.
'All decisions must be made with balance and prudence, taking into account the state's economic growth, industrial demands and the public's capacity to bear energy costs,' he said after chairing the MTS meeting here on Tuesday.
Hajiji said MTS continues to serve as the state's highest platform for aligning energy policy and noted that several fast-track projects approved last year are already delivering results.
Sabah's generation reserve margin has also risen from 10 per cent in January 2023, before the Sabah Energy Commission (ECoS) assumed regulatory authority, to 17 per cent currently, with a target of 30 per cent by year-end.
Hajiji added that these fast-track efforts have helped reduce the state's System Average Interruption Duration Index (SAIDI), from 363 minutes in the first half of 2023 to 215 minutes in the same period this year, and further down to 162 minutes in the latest reporting period.
Hajiji also called for greater empowerment of state-linked companies (GLCs) to play a mor significant role in Sabah's energy landscape.

Sabah PKR glad Hajiji decided to work with PH

Published on: Monday, July 28, 2025 Published on: Mon, Jul 28, 2025 By: Hayati Dzulkifli Text Size: 'As a PH leader, I welcome such cooperation. Its good news for Sabah,' Mustapha said. Kota Kinabalu: Parti Keadilan Rakyat (PKR) Sabah reacted with joy over confirmation of continued cooperation between GRS and PH in the coming State election, describing it as a positive step for the State. Its head Datuk Mustapha Sakmud said it is good news for Sabah and the people. 'I thank our Chief Minister Datuk Seri Hajiji Haji Noor for upholding the spirit of cooperation between GRS and PH. 'As a PH leader, I welcome such cooperation. Its good news for Sabah,' he said. 'The next step is to discuss seat allocation with PGRS in particular. We will sit down with them. Hopefully, we can iron things out and allocate seats accordingly,' he said. It is understood that the coalition is eyeing around 23 to 25 state seats. Earlier, Gabungan Rakyat Sabah said it would continue its political cooperation with Pakatan Harapan. GRS Chairman cum Chief Minister Hajiji said all component parties in GRS had agreed to join forces with PH following discussions. 'We continue the (political) cooperation that stands today between GRS and PH for the coming PRN17,' he said. Hajiji, who is Gagasan Rakyat President, said a formula (on seats distribution) has been worked out between the two ruling coalitions but not yet finalised, as few more things need to be sorted out. The GRS-PH collaboration was born following the last national election when GRS leaders – who were then under Bersatu which was part of Perikatan Nasional – found themselves having to decide whether to be part of the new Federal Unity Government of Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim, or stay in the opposition led by PN's Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin. The Bersatu election winners soon went under the new GRS grouping. Hajiji said the move was also in line with the strong support GRS received from PH Sabah during the political crisis commonly referred to as the 'Kinabalu Move' aimed at toppling Hajiji in early 2023. Since then, he said, the GRS-PH collaboration brought political stability and progress to Sabah — benefits that justify preserving the alliance. 'Our deepest thanks go to the PH Sabah leaders,' said Hajiji who is also Parti Gagasan Rakyat Sabah (Gagasan Rakyat) President. He also emphasized the importance of GRS as a strong coalition of local parties, striving to fulfil the aspirations of Sabahans who want primarily local-based parties to dominate state politics. 'GRS, born from the grassroots aspirations, will continue to promote mature and inclusive politics by embracing diversity, upholding consensus values and prioritising stability and progress for the state,' he said. 'PBS and Star, each with their own strengths and influence, are among the core contributors to the foundation and resilience of our political home GRS. 'It is no exaggeration to say that PBS and Star are not just pillars of strength for GRS, but also our close comrades who are always by our side offering support, insights, and advice, in line with their roles in the GRS-PH government,' he said. He extended the same appreciation to other GRS component parties – Sabah Progressive Party (SAPP), United Sabah National Organization (Usno), Parti Harapan Rakyat Sabah (PHRS), Liberal Democratic Party (LDP) and Parti Cinta Sabah (PCS). * Follow us on our official WhatsApp channel and Telegram for breaking news alerts and key updates! * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news? No ordinary election

Published on: Monday, July 28, 2025 Published on: Mon, Jul 28, 2025 By: Hayati Dzulkifli Text Size: Hajiji said the PRN17 would serve as a decisive moment for Sabah's political future, emphasising that the development plans introduced by the current administration (GRS-PH Plus) is already yielding tangible economic benefits. Kota Kinabalu: The imminent PRN17 is no ordinary State election but one that will determine the next course for Gabungan Rakyat Sabah (GRS) and the future of Sabah and its people. GRS Chairman who is also the Chief Minister Datuk Seri Hajiji Haji Noor (pic) said the people must not gamble with their future by treating it as another election. 'It is also not like playing 'katam-katam' (dice games) or betting on four-digit lottery numbers! 'This (PRN17) is reality — a serious responsibility that will determine the future of our people, our state and the next generations,' he said. Hajiji who is also Parti Gagasan Rakyat Sabah (Gagasan Rakyat) President said this in his policy speech at the Annual General Meeting (AGM) of Gagasan Rakyat, Sunday. It was attended by almost 10,000 delegates of Gagasan Rakyat. Among those present were former Chief Minister cum Parti Bersatu Rakyat (PBS) Premier Advisor Huguan Siou Tan Sri Joseph Pairin Kitingan, StarSabah Deputy President Datuk Ellron Alfred Angin, Sabah Progressive Party (SAPP) President cum former Chief Minister Datuk Seri Yong Teck Lee, Liberal Democratic Party (LDP) President Datuk Chin Su Phin, Parti Cinta Sabah (PCS) President Tan Sri Anifah Aman, Usno President Tan Sri Pandikar Amin, Parti Harapan Rakyat Sabah (Harapan Rakyat) Deputy President Datuk Yong Chi Fui, PKR Sabah Chairman Datuk Mustapha Sakmud, DAP Sabah Chairman Datuk Phoong Jin Zhe, Upko Deputy President Datuk Donald Peter Mojuntin and Sabah Amanah Chairman Datuk Lahirul Latigu. Hajiji said the PRN17 would serve as a decisive moment for Sabah's political future, emphasising that the development plans introduced by the current administration (GRS-PH Plus) is already yielding tangible economic benefits. 'This is our best opportunity to obtain the people's mandate and form a strong, stable state government. GRS has introduced development plans which are not empty slogans but have already shown tangible results, with positive economic growth in the State. 'To carry on with these development plans, we need a strong mandate from the people. Hence, the PRN17 is a golden opportunity that must not be missed,' he said. According to Hajiji, a victory for GRS in PRN17 would give them a stronger voice in efforts to develop Sabah. 'It will put us in a firmer position to assert and defend Sabah's rights. If we fail to form the State Government, we will have squandered a golden opportunity to place local political power at the forefront of Sabah's political landscape. 'If that happens, it is entirely possible that the well-functioning policies and development plans currently working well might be overturned or scrapped — just as these had happened before. And the ones who will suffer are the people, and the ones who will lose out are also the people of Sabah,' he said. 'When we formed the government nearly five years ago, we began our journey with clear determination and vision — like an architect building a palace with strong pillars and foundations. 'In that same spirit, we built our administration from the ground up based on the aspirations and values of grassroots communities, driven by the strength of local parties. We did not promise the moon and the stars — but we promised to do our very best for the people. Hajiji said he is optimistic that the people especially voters are wise in choosing who deserves to lead the state. 'I am positive and confident that based on our track record, the people (of Sabah) will again choose GRS to lead Sabah for the next five years. 'God willing, when we win, all our development plans can continue and be realized, ensuring continuity in administration and ongoing success,' he said. * Follow us on our official WhatsApp channel and Telegram for breaking news alerts and key updates! * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news? Dismissive attitude towards Borneo Bloc led to political shift: Hajiji

Published on: Monday, July 28, 2025 Published on: Mon, Jul 28, 2025 By: Jonathan Nicholas Text Size: KOTA KINABALU: Chief Minister Datuk Seri Hajiji Noor ( pic ) said the lack of respect shown towards the Borneo Bloc by the previous federal leadership prompted him to reconsider his political alignment. He recalled a meeting in Kuala Lumpur with Datuk Seri Masidi Manjun and Datuk Seri Jeffrey Kitingan where a senior federal leader dismissed the idea of a united Sabah and Sarawak voice. According to Hajiji, the leader's comment, declaring himself as 'the Master,' signalled a clear disregard for the Borneo Bloc's aspirations and Sabah's role in shaping its future. Speaking during the Gagasan Rakyat AGM on Sunday, Hajiji, who is also Gabungan Rakyat Sabah (GRS) Chairman and Gagasan Rakyat President, said the incident led to deep reflection and eventually convinced him that change was needed for the sake of Sabah. He said the Unity Government under Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim had taken Sabah's longstanding concerns seriously, particularly those related to the Malaysia Agreement 1963 (MA63). Hajiji stressed that GRS backs the current government because it respects Sabah's dignity and has begun to deliver on long-overdue commitments such as the devolution of powers. He confirmed he would join Anwar during his visit to Sabah today, with cross-border cooperation and regional concerns in the Sulawesi Sea expected to be among the key matters discussed. * Follow us on our official WhatsApp channel and Telegram for breaking news alerts and key updates! * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news?
