Kota Kinabalu: The imminent PRN17 is no ordinary State election but one that will determine the next course for Gabungan Rakyat Sabah (GRS) and the future of Sabah and its people. GRS Chairman who is also the Chief Minister Datuk Seri Hajiji Haji Noor (pic) said the people must not gamble with their future by treating it as another election. 'It is also not like playing 'katam-katam' (dice games) or betting on four-digit lottery numbers! 'This (PRN17) is reality — a serious responsibility that will determine the future of our people, our state and the next generations,' he said. Hajiji who is also Parti Gagasan Rakyat Sabah (Gagasan Rakyat) President said this in his policy speech at the Annual General Meeting (AGM) of Gagasan Rakyat, Sunday. It was attended by almost 10,000 delegates of Gagasan Rakyat. Among those present were former Chief Minister cum Parti Bersatu Rakyat (PBS) Premier Advisor Huguan Siou Tan Sri Joseph Pairin Kitingan, StarSabah Deputy President Datuk Ellron Alfred Angin, Sabah Progressive Party (SAPP) President cum former Chief Minister Datuk Seri Yong Teck Lee, Liberal Democratic Party (LDP) President Datuk Chin Su Phin, Parti Cinta Sabah (PCS) President Tan Sri Anifah Aman, Usno President Tan Sri Pandikar Amin, Parti Harapan Rakyat Sabah (Harapan Rakyat) Deputy President Datuk Yong Chi Fui, PKR Sabah Chairman Datuk Mustapha Sakmud, DAP Sabah Chairman Datuk Phoong Jin Zhe, Upko Deputy President Datuk Donald Peter Mojuntin and Sabah Amanah Chairman Datuk Lahirul Latigu. Hajiji said the PRN17 would serve as a decisive moment for Sabah's political future, emphasising that the development plans introduced by the current administration (GRS-PH Plus) is already yielding tangible economic benefits. 'This is our best opportunity to obtain the people's mandate and form a strong, stable state government. GRS has introduced development plans which are not empty slogans but have already shown tangible results, with positive economic growth in the State. 'To carry on with these development plans, we need a strong mandate from the people. Hence, the PRN17 is a golden opportunity that must not be missed,' he said. According to Hajiji, a victory for GRS in PRN17 would give them a stronger voice in efforts to develop Sabah. 'It will put us in a firmer position to assert and defend Sabah's rights. If we fail to form the State Government, we will have squandered a golden opportunity to place local political power at the forefront of Sabah's political landscape. 'If that happens, it is entirely possible that the well-functioning policies and development plans currently working well might be overturned or scrapped — just as these had happened before. And the ones who will suffer are the people, and the ones who will lose out are also the people of Sabah,' he said. 'When we formed the government nearly five years ago, we began our journey with clear determination and vision — like an architect building a palace with strong pillars and foundations. 'In that same spirit, we built our administration from the ground up based on the aspirations and values of grassroots communities, driven by the strength of local parties. We did not promise the moon and the stars — but we promised to do our very best for the people. Hajiji said he is optimistic that the people especially voters are wise in choosing who deserves to lead the state. 'I am positive and confident that based on our track record, the people (of Sabah) will again choose GRS to lead Sabah for the next five years. 'God willing, when we win, all our development plans can continue and be realized, ensuring continuity in administration and ongoing success,' he said. * Follow us on our official WhatsApp channel and Telegram for breaking news alerts and key updates! * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news? Pandikar now backs Hajiji's move for GRS to work with Pakatan

KOTA KINABALU: Outspoken United Sabah National Organisation (Usno) president Tan Sri Pandikar Amin Mulia has backed Gabungan Rakyat Sabah (GRS) chairman Datuk Seri Hajiji Noor's decision to go into an electoral pact with Pakatan Harapan. "I support Hajiji's stand in working together with any parties, so long as the deal benefits GRS in that the seats allocation ratio favours GRS," he said Sunday (Aug 3). Pandikar said that Hajiji discussed with him personally and assured that GRS would be putting candidates in more than 50 out of the 73 state seats. "This to me is a stand that is within the scope of the definition of the GRS's war cry 'Rumah Kita, Kita Jaga,' (Our Home, We Protect)," he said when contacted. Pandikar, along with Sabah STAR president Datuk Seri Dr Jeffrey Kitingan and Sabah Progressive Party (SAPP) president Datuk Seri Yong Teck Lee, have been pushing for the eight-party GRS to contest independently in the upcoming state election. "I admit that I have amplified the voice of Datuk Dr Jeffrey, that whoever works with Malaya parties are traitor," Pandikar said. He said Usno's views expressed during political roadshows were to gauge Sabahans' opinions, and if they would support a local party if it were to go solo. "Whilst a reasonable number of Sabahans aspire for GRS to go solo, there are also many who expressed the opinion that total political confrontation with Putrajaya is not a wise move," he said. As such, Usno will remain in GRS to contest in the upcoming election and will support the decision of the GRS chairman to collaborate with any political parties in the election. On July 27, Hajiji announced that GRS will work with Pakatan in the coming state election and subsequently said that he had consulted with GRS leaders on the decision to work with Pakatan to ensure political stability. The SAPP president said that the GRS supreme council had not endorsed the decision and maintained the party's stand that GRS should go solo. Jeffrey has not officially responded to Hajiji's announcement to work with Pakatan, which is already working on an electoral pact with Barisan Nasional for the coming election.

PH seeks to avoid three-cornered fights in state polls

Published on: Sunday, August 03, 2025 Published on: Sun, Aug 03, 2025 By: Hayati Dzulkifli Text Size: Anwar attends the meeting with other PKR leaders. - Pic by Bernama KOTA KINABALU: Pakatan Harapan (PH) is aiming to avoid three-cornered contests in the upcoming 17th State Election, with cooperation among allies being the central strategy. Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim, who chairs PH, said the coalition is prioritising arrangements that prevent internal clashes and promote unity. He noted that PH is working towards a consensus to ensure candidates do not overlap, as such scenarios risk fragmenting voter support. 'But if it has to happen, our position is that we will refrain from contesting to avoid causing divisions,' said Anwar, who also leads Parti Keadilan Rakyat (PKR). He shared this after a closed-door meeting with Sabah PKR leaders here on Sunday when asked about PH's approach if GRS and BN candidates contest the same seats. * Follow us on our official WhatsApp channel and Telegram for breaking news alerts and key updates! * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news? [UPDATED] Anwar: Sulawesi Sea talks must honour legal, historical claims

KOTA KINABALU: Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim has assured that any discussion involving the Sulawesi Sea must be based on legal and historical considerations. He added that the outcomes require the agreement of both the Sabah government and the state legislative assembly. He said the recent 13th Malaysia-Indonesia Annual Consultation meeting with Indonesian president Prabowo Subianto concerning the Sulawesi Sea was conducted in the presence of Sabah Chief Minister Datuk Seri Hajiji Noor and Sarawak Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg. "In line with the principles of the Madani government, matters such as border delimitation must involve state leaders, including those from Sabah. "I think the Chief Minister (Hajiji) should hear it directly, to express his views, and to be aware of what was discussed," he said during the closing of the three-day National Farmers, Breeders and Fishermen's event at Sabah International Convention Centre here. Regarding the Sulawesi Sea, Anwar said he had made it clear, in the presence of Hajiji, that the issue must be discussed based on the 1982 United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea and historical antecedents. The dispute in the Sulawesi Sea involving overlapping maritime claims between East Kalimantan (Indonesia) and southeastern Sabah (Malaysia) has persisted since Malaysia published a map of its maritime boundaries in 1979. According to a written reply dated July 22 published on the Parliament website, the Foreign Ministry maintains that the ND6 and ND7 oil exploration blocks in the Sulawesi Sea fall within Malaysian sovereign territory under international law. "Most importantly, any decision must have the agreement of the Sabah state government and, ultimately, the State Legislative Assembly. "I have chosen to respond as the representative of the federal government, and I will defend Sabah's rights. "This is our country. We will not allow even a single inch of land or sea to be encroached upon or claimed by anyone. "When it came to the court case in Spain involving the Sulu heirs' claims over Sabah, we fought with maximum effort to defend Sabah's sovereignty."
