Italian athlete Mattia Debertolis dies aged 29 after collapsing at World Games
In a joint statement from the International World Games Association, the local organizing committee (LOC) and the International Orienteering Federation (IOF), the World Games said that the 29-year-old was found unconscious during the men's middle-distance race in the orienteering competition on August 8 in Chengdu, China.
Although the Italian was rushed to hospital where he received immediate medical care, he passed away on Tuesday.
The World Games statement said that they are 'struck by this tragedy and extend their heartfelt condolences to the family and friends of the athlete and the whole Orienteering Community. Our thoughts are with those touched by this event.'
The statement did not give a cause of death.
Debertolis was part of the Italian Orienteering Federation's (FISO) team at the 2025 World Games.
Orienteering is a sport where athletes race across an unfamiliar terrain with the use of a map and a compass. The sport challenges participants' ability to problem solve and navigate outdoor challenges, all against the clock.
The IOF separately expressed their condolences to Debertolis' family and friends.
'I am not able to adequately describe in words the unfathomable dept of sadness in this tragic loss of life. Our thoughts are with all who mourn Mattia. I encourage the global orienteering community to honor his memory,' IOF president Tom Hollowell said.
According to FISO, the mountain bike orienteering races being held in Poland will see the awards ceremony with flags at half-mast to honor Debertolis.
Debertolis had been a mainstay in Italy's national orienteering team for years, competing in multiple World Championships and World Cups.
Participating in Italy's fifth-place finish at the World Cup Final 2022 Relay is one of Debertolis' career achievements on the international circuit.
Born in the Primiero valley in Italy, Debertolis participated in orienteering, cross-country skiing and soccer as a youth, but his love for navigating meant he chose to compete in elite orienteering.
Away from competing, Debertolis was also trained as a civil engineer. He was studying for a PhD at the University of Stockholm, where he lived.

On Wednesday, Phelps went into greater detail on his critiques in a lengthy post on Instagram. The post called out USA Swimming for a decline in performance over the past couple years and detailed a number of issues Phelps sees within the program. Before getting into all of that, though, Phelps started the post by clarifying that his criticisms are targeted at the leadership within USA Swimming, and not its athletes. From there, Phelps laid out his issues with USA Swimming. He started by calling out the team's decline in performance, stating that Team USA won just 44 percent of the medals they competed for in the 2024 Paris Olympics. That was the lowest total the U.S. saw in the sport since 1988. He then accused USA Swimming of poor leadership, saying that trickles down and affects the athletes involved with the organization. Phelps said he sent a letter to USA Swimming earlier this year, but it "seemed to fall on deaf ears." While Phelps said money was a factor in USA Swimming's decline, he called "poor operational controls and weak leadership" the "cornerstone of the sport's problems." Phelps explained that he believes athletes are no longer getting the necessary support necessary to compete at the highest level. He called out the sport's declining participation numbers, and said he would be hesitant to allow his sons to compete in swimming. Phelps then explained that he wants to be part of the solution for USA Swimming. He urged others to weigh in with their thoughts before listing out three recommendations for the organization. Those recommendations included USA Swimming holding an independent review into the organization as a whole, creating an athlete-first methodology to adequately support swimmers and focusing on strengthening the sport at the grassroots level. Phelps offered up his services and vowed to be a resource for USA Swimming at the end of the post, saying "My door is open and there is work to be done." Phelps' post comes just weeks after he shared a critical post from former teammate — and Olympic gold medalist Ryan Lochte. In that post, Lochte sent out an image in which a funeral was being held for USA Swimming. Phelps asked if the 2025 World Championships would be a "wake-up call" for USA Swimming. Phelps knows a thing or two about the sport. He's widely considered one of the best swimmers — and one of the best Olympians — of all time. Phelps won a record 23 gold medals over his Olympics career. Team USA recovered from a slow start at the 2025 World Championships. The team finished with nine gold medals in swimming at the event, which led all countries. It also finished with 29 total medals, which was also ranked first. Despite the team's success, it's clear Phelps believes more work needs to be done. And he's willing to be a part of that solution.

PSG Goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma Announces He's Leaving the Club
Just hours after being left out of Paris Saint-Germain's squad for Wednesday's UEFA Super Cup final against Tottenham, star goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma posted a message saying he is leaving the club. When PSG named its squad for the match earlier on Tuesday, goalkeeper Lucas Chevalier, who recently joined from Lille for just over 40 million euros ($46 million), was included along with backup goalies Matvei Safonov and Renato Marin. Chevalier's arrival was expected to signal Donnarumma's departure, with the 26-year-old Italy international unlikely to accept being No. 2 if coach Luis Enrique decided so. Donnarumma then posted a message in Italian, English and French on his Instagram account saying he had effectively been forced out. "Unfortunately, someone has decided that I can no longer be part of the group and contribute to the team's success," he wrote. "I am disappointed and disheartened." He bade farewell to fans ahead of the new season. "I hope to have the opportunity to look the fans at the Parc des Princes in the eyes one more time and say goodbye as it should be done," Donnarumma said. "I will always carry with me the memory of all the emotions, the magical nights and of you, who made me feel at home." Donnarumma did not name the person who no longer wants him in the squad, but in a pre-match news conference PSG coach Luis Enrique explained why he had signed Chevalier. "These are always difficult decisions to make, I know. I can only say good things about Gigio (Gianluigi). He's one of the best players in his position, without a doubt, and he's even better as a person," Luis Enrique said. "We were looking for a different type of goalkeeper. And I repeat, it's always difficult to make a decision like that." It is thought that Chevalier's superior passing from the back— which has been a noticeable shortcoming for Donnarumma — was a crucial factor in the decision. However, Donnarumma was arguably the best goalkeeper in Europe last season, playing a key role in PSG's Champions League success with inspired shot-stopping in the knockout stages. He also starred for Italy when it won the European Championship in 2021. But with one year left on his contract, Donnarumma had refused to sign a new contract and PSG was unlikely to let him leave for free at the end of the season. He has been strongly linked with a move to Premier League big-spender Manchester City, with Manchester United also reportedly interested. PSG experienced the same situation two seasons ago with Kylian Mbappe, who ended up joining Real Madrid on a free transfer after refusing to take up the option of a one-year contract extension. Donnarumma was in a similar position to Chevalier when he joined the club after helping Italy win the Euros. He replaced Keylor Navas as No. 1, even though Navas had been outstanding for PSG the previous season. Donnarumma's arrival at PSG was seen by fans as hugely unfair on Navas and a clumsy move by the club. Now the situation has come full circle for the Italy keeper, who finds himself in much the same position as Navas was. "If he has to go, then we thank him from the bottom of our hearts," PSG captain Marquinhos said. "He has been a great leader all these years. Seeing Donnarumma leave would upset me."
