West Australian21-07-2025
Three of the four victims killed in a horror car crash in Queensland's Central Highlands region have been identified and remembered in a heartbreaking fundraising appeal.
Shaun Ranger and his children Baylee, 7, and Chandler, 6, were killed in the two-vehicle crash on Sunday that happened just before 10.50am on the Capricorn Highway between Comet and Blackwater.
'Initial investigations indicate a Holden Commodore travelling towards Blackwater with four occupants struck a Toyota HiLux utility containing two occupants travelling in the opposite direction,' the police said.
'The driver, a 28-year-old man, six-year-old boy, seven-year-old girl and 32-year-old man died as a result of the crash.'
The occupants of the HiLux also suffered injuries in the crash.
Paramedics took a 28-year-old man to hospital in a serious but stable condition and flew a 27-year-old man to Brisbane for treatment for life-threatening injuries.
Family friend Chantel Semple has set up a fundraiser for Renee Carla, the mother to Baylee and Chandler and Mr Ranger's fiancee, with the money to help the devastated mum and two-year-old Saphora.
'It is with broken hearts that we share the loss of my dear friend's two beautiful babies and their loving and devoted father today in a devastating car accident,' she said.
'Shaun, Baylee and Chandler were cherished and loved by many and brought so much joy and light into our lives.
'Baylee, aged 7, had a cheeky smile, bubbly personality and a love for horses.
'Chandler, aged 6, was a sweet and kind-hearted little boy, full of life and loved the outdoors.
'Shaun a dedicated and selfless father, supportive friend and loving partner.'
Ms Semple said the family's friends were 'heartbroken' over the unexpected loss.
'I hope to relieve the extra stress and heartache that this family already have to endure by raising much-needed funds to cover costs for funeral expenses and support Renee and little Saphora,' she said.
As of Monday morning, $17,180 has been raised from a $26,000 target.
Investigations into the incident are continuing.
The police are expected to provide further updates on Monday.
The weekend proved a catastrophe for the state's road toll, with six people killed across Saturday and Sunday.
As of July 20, 158 people have lost their lives in road crashes in Queensland.

NT Police searching for 76-year-old Victorian Dave Haywood, last seen near Tennant Creek

Concerns for the welfare of a father out on a fossicking trip in the Northern Territory have been raised by his family after he failed to contact them for days – an uncharacteristic behaviour, according to his younger daughter. Dave Haywood, 76, had not contacted his family since Friday, August 1, his youngest daughter Lisa said. 'He calls his wife pretty much every night, especially while he's travelling and he's on his own,' she said. Ms Haywood, who lives in Melbourne, said her Dad was out on a fossicking trip in the Northern Territory, and was last seen in the Tennant Creek area. He was travelling to Top Springs, Ms Haywood said, and had spent the night at Threeways Roadhouse. 'We know he left Threeways Friday morning and went south to Tennant Creek,' she said. 'And then he was saying he was headed north back north towards Elliot.' But he had not been heard from since, she said. The family had contacted police, she said, who 'pinged' her dad's phone south of Elliot. But despite his phone ringing, no one was answering, she said. 'We haven't heard nothing,' she said. Ms Haywood said her dad was driving a 2011 white Toyota HiLux, with Victorian registration 1IL 8HB. He was also towing a small trailer, she said.

Man charged with Aldinga Beach house arson attack

Don't miss out on the headlines from SA News. Followed categories will be added to My News. A man has been arrested and will face court after repeated arson attacks on a home and two cars in Aldinga Beach. The 20-year-old Davoren Park man has been charged with four counts of arson and one counts of failing to truly identify the driver of a vehicle after police attended an Angle Vale property on Tuesday. His arrest follows investigations into multiple fires at a Pebble Court address in Aldinga Beach earlier this month. Police attended on July 15 around 1.15am after an allegedly stolen Kia sedan was reversed into the driveway of a home and crashed into the garage door. The vehicle was then set alight and subsequently rolled out of the driveway, crossing over the road to two neighbouring properties where it caused further damage to a fence and pergola, police said. Crime Gangs Task Force investigators identified a second car allegedly seen travelling to Aldinga Beach in convoy with the Kia. On Tuesday police located the registered owner of the white 2015 Toyota HiLux at an Angle Vale property – and arrested the 20-year-old man at the home. The vehicle has been seized along with other alleged evidence. Residents of the street told The Advertiser a second fire had broken out on Saturday, July 19, with a third fire starting around 1am on July 21. The third fire gutted the family home, but around 30 firefighters were able to contain the blaze that caused an estimated $200,000 damage before neighbouring homes were damaged. Six teens were later arrested over the two subsequent blazes after an epic 70km police pursuit that ended in Two Wells, north of Adelaide. Investigations are continuing in relation to these incidents. Originally published as Man charged with arson after Aldinga Beach home gutted by fire, car set alight
